Training Day Premiere Recap 2/2/17: Season 1 Episode 1 "Apocalypse Now"

Tonight the Series Premiere of the CBS series Training Day airs with a Thursday, February 2, 2017, season 1 episode 1 and we have your Training Day recap below. On tonight’s episode called, “Apocalypse Now” as per the CBS synopsis, “15 years after the events of the feature film, about a young, idealistic police officer who is tapped to go undercover in an elite squad of the LAPD where he partners with a morally ambiguous veteran detective.”

The show opens with Kyle and his partner being fired upon as they enter an apartment containing a screaming woman and her baby. A bearded man shoots at them with a semi-automatic weapon. Kyle grabs the man’s arm and as they fight they knock over a water heater which release gas into the air. Kyle grabs the baby as the man starts firing again which causes an explosion. The explosion sends Kyle and the baby out the window and down onto a car on the road two stories below.

Kyle flashes back to a memory of he and his father planting a community garden. As they work several rough looking boys watch them. Kyle worries that the boys will destroy the garden but his father flashes his gun and the boys leave. His father tells him being a man isn’t about how tough you are but rather about building thing ups. You have to leave the world better than you found it.

Kyle and the baby are fine. Kyle’s wife tells him that he is chasing his father’s ghost and he flashes to his father’s funeral and he tells her his father’s killers have a 10-year head start on him but he will find them. They kiss until they are interrupted by a telephone call from the deputy chief who asks him to meet her tomorrow at city hall.They met and she asks him what he knows about the Alonzo Harris scandal. She tells him the aftermath scattered the city. She needs him to go undercover to make sure they don’t have another scandal like that.

He recruits a young boy who is nearby to help him. The boy tells him he is there because he refused to be a lookout man for Moreno, a drug dealer in his neighborhood. Frank tells him he is nuts to turn down the job as it is easy money. The boy can’t believe he is a cop.

Frank takes the boy back to the neighborhood and the boy tells him he is a racist and leaves. Frank goes to the porch of a house and grabs the man sitting on it. He twists his arm and takes a swig out of his bottle. Frank then sets the house on fire. As men coming running out of the house he shoots them with rubber bullets which cause them all to fall to the ground. He tells the leader, Moreno to leave the young boy alone. Frank then takes Moreno’s bag full of money and leaves.

Kyle and his partner show up at the scene of the fire. Frank is there and is introduced to Kyle who will be his new trainee. As they drive away Moreno can be heard yelling for help from the trunk of Frank’s care. Frank turns up the radio. Kyle tells Frank that he has the partial license plate number of the car that was used in s father’s death and he hopes to get lucky one day and find it. Kyle says his wife thinks he is crazy.

Frank tells Kyle that police work is a lot like sex, it is a lot more effective when it isn’t pretty. Frank says there job is a lot more effective if you are economical with the truth. He then asks if Kyle lies to his wife. Kyle answers, “No”. He says telling the truth is the point of being married but Frank argues that there is no point in being married. He says he has been divorced 4 times. Frank tells Kyle that he would rather be judged by 12 then carried by 6. Frank and Kyle stop in an oil field and Frank lets Moreno out of the trunk. Moreno immediately attacks Kyle. They fight briefly then Moreno tells Frank that Menjivar is back in town. Frank tells Kyle Menjivar used a blowtorch to torture his enemies. Moreno says the $400,000 he had was to be used to get out of town. He tells Frank that he should also leave town.

Frank and Kyle stop in an oil field and Frank lets Moreno out of the trunk. Moreno immediately attacks Kyle. They fight briefly then Moreno tells Frank that Menjivar is back in town. Frank tells Kyle Menjivar used a blowtorch to torture his enemies. Moreno says the $400,000 he had was to be used to get out of town. He tells Frank that he should also leave town.

Menjivar is riding in the back of an ambulance and has bandages on his face. They must stop because a bum is in the road. The bum pulls a rocket launcher out of his bag and blows up the ambulance. Several other men begin firing on the ambulance. The police arrive and the men shoot at the police. Menjivar is able to drive away as Frank and Kyle race the scene. Kyle sees that his old partner has been shot and killed.

Tommy and Rebecca approach and introduce themselves to Kyle. SIS decides they are on the case. Frank says 6 cops were killed and they are going to make sure the killers never see the inside of a courtroom. The group watches footage from the officer’s body cam. They recognize several of the killers and realize Menjivar had facial reconstruction to hide his identity.

Frank and Kyle go to a club to try to find Menjivar’s girlfriend. They run into Holly who is madam and also Frank’s girlfriend. They find Natala but just then a man pulls a gun on Holly. She steps on his toe with her high heel and Frank shoots one of the men. Holly is released but Natala is taken. Frank asks Kyle why he didn’t shoot the man who killed his partner, Theo. Kyle says he was unarmed. Frank tells him that to fight monsters you have to become one.

Kyle says that when you cross that line there is no difference between them and us. Frank tells him to leave, that training day is over and he failed. As Kyle is leaving the building he is taken hostage by Menjivar who takes him to a warehouse and lights his blowtorch. He asks Kyle to tell him where Natala is. Kyle says he doesn’t know. Menjivar calls Frank and arranges a meeting to exchange Klye for Natala

Moreno is seen going to Rios to tell him where Frank and Menjivar are going to meet. This Rios can get them both at the same time. Frank drives into the desert where Menjivar has Kyle. Frank pulls Natala out of the car. Menjivar tells his men that as soon as he has Natala kill Frank. Franks people start shooting from the bushes and kill all of Menjivar’s men. Just then Rios and his thugs arrive. A gun battle erupts and Kyle and Theo throw down their guns and fist fight. Frank and his people continue to battle until Frank kills Rios.

Frank lets Menjivar and Natala get away and Kyle arrests Theo. Kyle yells at Frank for letting Menjivar go but Frank says he is just restoring order to the world. Menjivar is a businessman and he would rather he run the drug trade then Rios who was a butcher. Kyle says he is a cop and he will not tarnish his father’s name for Frank.

Frank lets Kyle know he knew his dad well and that Kyle only knows what his dad wanted him to know. Frank says his dad spent most of his work time with Frank and that they went through the academy together. Frank says he was supposed to meet Kyle’s dad the night he died and that he doesn’t think he died in a botched robbery. He thinks a hit was put out on him. Frank also says that number’s Kyle has aren’t a license plate number. He thinks it is a message. Kyle says it is a bible verse about the fruit in the garden.

Kyle and Frank go back the community garden from his youth and find a box buried. Inside is a key but they don’t know to what. Frank says Lockhart was involved when Kyle’s dad died and that is why she put them together now. She doesn’t want to find the killers. Kyle says he doesn’t trust Frank. Frank tells Kyle he needs him to find the killer and Kyle tells Frank he needs him to keep him from falling too far into the darkness.

Kyle returns home and at first lies to his wife about what happened on his first day but then tells her everything. Frank appears at Allen’s door and gives him an envelope. He has set up a trust for $300,000 dollars for Allen to have when he turns 18. Allen is now under his protection and everyone knows it.
Kyle’s wife tries to convince him to go to his bosses but he refuses. He feels his father would want him to help Frank, to rehabilitate him. Kyle will train Frank.
