The new CBS series begins tonight with girl leaving a video message for her father, admitting they have had their problems but she wouldn’t be who she is if it wasn’t for him. She tells him she loves him and hopes he travels safe.
At Allsourcer Headquarters in Palo Alto, California, where Jeffrey Tanner (Jeremy Piven), CEO of a social media provocateur has called a press conference; he takes the platform revealing he signed an agreement giving up all ownership of Allsourcer, explaining why. He shares that the one year anniversary of his daughter, Mia’s (Abigail F. Cowen) death/murder, and unless someone has been through losing a child, they have no idea what he is going through.
Alex (Monica Potter) enters a room, where she is intent on listening to the press conference. Jeffrey says apparently the wheels of justice worked and they caught and convicted Carlos Ochoa (Ramses Jimenez), a man who worked at the shelter Mia was interning at. The problem is Jeffrey believes they have the wrong guy and he has evidence that was never made public, that leads him to believe they have incarcerated the wrong man; revealing he has created a platform to help bring more evidence forward.
Detective Tommy Cavanaugh (Richard T. Jones) listens as well as Jeffrey makes “Sophie” active, saying Sophie is real-time, crowd-sourced crime solving, a hub where people can submit and dissect evidence. He feels Sophie will revolutionize crime solving; offering $100 million for anyone who can identify or apprehend his daughter’s killer! Dt. Cavanaugh is called into the Deputy Chief’s office.
Jeffrey meets with Alex, apologizing for not telling her first; she begs him to just let it go and it’s over. He talks about times before they split up and before Mia vanished and died. She sheds a tear reminding him that nothing he will do can bring her back; even though he denies it, she said he was a good dad, but an awful husband.
Dt. Tommy Cavanaugh is sent to see Jeffrey, telling him this isn’t about the money, as people want to be a part of something meaningful. Sarah (Natalia Tena) greets them as Jeffrey shows Cavanaugh how this whole system works – The wisdom of the crowd! He is skeptical, saying there is a reason only cops solve crimes, reminding them of the constitution and the right to privacy; Jeffrey begs to differ, leading the detective into the “hive”.
Jeffrey is sure this will work, as he tested it for Mia’s memorial, and finds a woman named Laurie, who Mia was apparently close to and left a frightened message for the day she was murdered. Cavanaugh is shocked, especially when Jeffrey reveals his old partner, Dt. Ruiz (Ion Overman), had the evidence all along and kept it from both of them. Later, Ruiz insists she was talking about Carlos Ochoa in that message; but Laurie said it was about a secret boyfriend and refused to take the stand. Ruiz gives Cavanaugh the transcripts of what Laurie said and tells him to go ahead and chase it but he won’t find anything because there is no other guy.
Tommy returns when he gets an evidence alert on his phone, they see a video from outside Mia’s building and the man who leaves it too tall to be Ochoa and Tommy says it’s the other guy!
Detective Cavanaugh visits with Susan Lee (Elfina Luk), who didn’t come forward with the info before. She only released what she had after Jeffrey made the announcement, calling him a genius and wanting to meet him. Mike Leigh (Malachi Weir), as his friend, not lawyer or financial advisor says this will destroy him but Jeffrey says he doesn’t care, this is it and this is what he is doing, telling him to get used to it; he rushes out to see Tommy when he comes back.
He wanted to work with him because he watched him investigate his daughter’s murder and he seemed like a man who can think for himself; he agrees but says just because he had questions doesn’t mean he is “on board” with all of this. He says this video proves that this will work but Tommy is worried about them not playing by the rules but Jeffrey is persistent; Tommy calls him a pain in the ass, and Jeffrey tells him “head of the curve”.
Tommy and Jeffrey go to see Ochoa, who says the press conference is only making things worse for him. He doesn’t want to hear anything about it but Jeffrey says he saw him with her and is sorry he didn’t do something sooner but he is there for him now, trying to prove his innocence. Jeffrey shows him the video of the man leaving Mia’s place, as Tommy questions him about the “Sports Shop”. He watches the video saying she knows she had Jeffrey’s name but she didn’t act like him; she was beautiful and real.
Jeffrey and Tommy rush back to the hive and learn they have been hacked; the video is longer now and they see a car. Sarah says she needs to dig through the crowd sourcing which is 90% is garbage but 10% is a lot of “bling”. They quickly discover the car was used for a car service and Tommy finds out it is a man named Maloof (Anousha Alamain).
Jeffrey is furious that they had the video all along and tries to fire someone but Sarah says she hired the people and to fire her if anyone. He stomps off and she tells everyone to get back to work. Tommy and Jeffrey meet with Tariq (Jake Matthews), the man who hacked him.
Tariq explains how lazy his workers are and says he breached Jeffrey’s account, telling him he should get a better VPN for his phones. Jeffrey asks him if he wants a job and orders Mike to put him on payroll; Maloof is in the hospital, after being assaulted. He reveals to Tommy about the night, he had stopped for lunch and claims to have never seen the man in the video; Tommy suddenly sees a name he recognizes and thinks there may be a connection between another woman’s murder and Mia’s.
Ruiz and Cavanaugh visit Tammy Scavuzzo (Alex Duncan), the ride who cancelled Maloof that night. She blacked out that night, admitting she doesn’t usually do that. She confirms that she felt like she was sexually assaulted that night; Ruiz says this isn’t even the murder case he is working on and if Jeffrey wants them to try out his new toy, he is going to send it on a test drive.
Josh Novak (Blake Lee) apologizes to Sarah for using the code, she tells him she will see him tomorrow and leaves; but is quickly distracted by a message that says Tanner is a fool and he is sorry. Sarah shows up at Jeffrey’s saying he could do better than apologize by text; he says he didn’t mean to put her on the spot and she tells him to be kinder to Josh as she jokes he may even fancy her; Jeffrey pretends to be jealous but isn’t ready to tell people that they are together.
As they are laughing over pudding being a comfort food, she is surprised he was able to not check his phone as several messages come through. She jumps into his arms and they kiss. The following morning, Jeffrey sits at his desk and holds a piece of shell remembering a sweet moment with his little girl.
Jeffrey comes to the hive and discovers the alerts he is getting are not about Mia but Natalie Kirschner. Jeffrey is upset about another case as Tommy says this revolutionary program was supposed to solve crime not just Mia’s case. Jeffrey speaks to Sarah in private, saying this is splitting their focus but she feels they have an opportunity to help and they need to take it as people continue to respond.
They find 4 women who have all the same story as Natalie and all are connected to the bartender, Eric Buehner (Chad Rook); Tommy gets mad when they are hacking into files to find out information, saying it’s a slippery slope; Ruiz leaves to meet Tommy at the Windsor Bistro Eric is at. They question Eric, who says the bouncer say her get into a car and swears he didn’t put anything in her drink nor saw anyone do it; Ruiz and Cavanaugh both know he is lying and watch from outside to see what he does.
Eric quickly gets into a taxi and they follow him to a park where he is set to meet someone. Tariq offers to hack into his phone for audio, but Tommy refuses; Tanner finds out there is a Sophie user in the park and asks to use her phone as a listening device, she agrees and they are able to hack in, giving Ruiz and Tommy audio; after hearing them talk about the “girls”, the police rush in. Tommy gives chase but the other suspect escapes and no one can find him.
Tommy reveals the other suspect has been charged with rape a few years earlier and the case was dropped and now he is in the wind. He tells Jeffrey to post the photo of Volkan Ayhan and Sophie users all over are viewing it, one spotting him entering the train station; others photograph him inside the station; Cavanaugh races to the station as the spottings have been confirmed; the hive have a problem when the users begin to follow him instead of staying away.
None of the users are backing down, and Jeffrey wonders how far away the police are. Volkan looks out the window and sees everyone recording him. Jeffrey tells the hive people aren’t running or afraid because they want to be a part of something. He gets off the train and shouts for people to get away from him; the arrest is streaming live.
Alex sends Jeffrey a message asking if he has seen the news and that their daughter, Mia would be proud of him. He asks if her mother (Alex) would be proud too. Alex tells him she always was; he smiles.
Jeffrey tells Tommy to do the honors as Sarah tell him to enter the button, revealing to the world that Natalie’s murder is CLOSED. Tommy is sorry it’s not the case Jeffrey wanted him to solve, but he is confident saying it is a start. Tommy reveals the State has decided not to reopen Mia’s murder case and standing by the conviction. Jeffrey says he didn’t expect them to until they had enough evidence to force their hand. Tommy tells him “good luck with that” and drives away.
That night, Jeffrey, moves over a sleeping Sarah as Cavanaugh cleans up his desk for the night. Jeffrey watches the video, the last message Mia left him. Tommy and Jeffrey watch the video from their own locations, and receive the new evidence alert.
