Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) and Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) arrive at the hospital discussing their knowledge of basketball, when they kiss and part ways for their various duties. Will meets Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) in the Doctor’s locker room, asking him how Dr. Robin Charles (Mekia Cox) is doing. Colin says she is doing great but shopping like a fiend lately. He is distracted by a message, and informs Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) to inform CT he had to leave but will be back as soon as he can and rushes out the door, just as Dr. Sarah Reese (Rachel DiPillo) arrives at work, grabbing her pepper spray out of her glove box.

Connor arrives at the Dolan Rhodes building and apologizes to Darren, the security officer, who shows him a bag full of scarves and says they would have called Chicago PD if his father wouldn’t have recognized her. Connor is upset that they had to lock her in the room and rushes in to comfort her when she says she doesn’t know what is the matter with her.

Back at Chicago Med, Dr. Manning is tending to her patient Mrs. Buckley who has a broken wrist; April Sexton (Yaya Costa) notices her daughter also winces in pain but says that it is nothing. When April and Natalie leave the room, Natalie asks how Dr. Noah Sexton (Roland Buck III) is doing. Connor reminds Robin that this is the Encephalitis and it will pass, but she feels extremely humiliated but needs to pull herself together. Connor’s father says she is a kleptomaniac and its time for him to move on from Robin; when Connor says she is still recovering. His dad says either she is unstable or a criminal and his advise is to get rid of her; something Robin overhears.

Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) arrives at the hospital and Will is surprised him and April were able to keep their relationship a secret for 6 months. Maggie brings up her frustration to Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) that she is a charge nurse and hanging up IV bags and demands to know when they are going to hire more nurses. They chat is interrupted with an incoming emergency for Dr. Will Halstead.

The patient insists that he is radioactive and is too agitated to get vitals. They manage to get him on the bed and put him in the restraints as Dr. Halstead calls for psych. Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) arrives quickly with a very scared Dr. Sarah Reese behind him; they sedate him. Sarah immediately feels schizophrenia usually manifests at his age, but when Dr. Charles sees how frighten she is, he asks Nurse Doris (Lorena Diaz) to step out of the room. Reese assures him she is fine and capable of treating the patient and he leaves the room as she holds the canister of pepper spray in her pocket.

Connor, finds Robin on the balcony, tells her he has to go back to work, but there are left-overs in the fridge if she is hungry, He reassures her that he loves her and she isn’t his patient. She tells him that she wouldn’t love her and would get rid of her too. Connor calls his dad an SOB who loves to destroy things, but she cuts him off saying he likes to fix things like leaky valves, unhinged girlfriends, always wanting and needing to save someone and that isn’t the same as loving someone. He says her illness gives her a distorted view of things and it is a matter of brain chemistry; he promises to be home as soon as he can and kisses her.

At the nurses’ station, Dr. Halstead meets his new patient, Jessie Roe. Her husband feels it could be the new IVF treatment. He does an x-ray, sees some congestion in her lungs, but not enough to concern him and hopes she will feel better soon.

Dr. Choi meets with Eddie Janichek (Bob Kruse) who continues to cut himself. He wants an explanation as to why it keeps happening. Choi says is going to sew him up but when he insists that he always feels crummy, he decides to run a couple more tests on him. Dr. Manning returns to see Mrs. Buckley to start her discharge papers but when her daughter, Nancy (Henny Russell) has a severe pain in her side, Dr. Manning wants to run a few tests on her as well, she agrees.

Connor finds Dr. Reese by the coffee cart and learns Robin hasn’t had a follow up in 2 months. Connor suggests that someone with more familiarity and experience with her condition should follow up with Robin. He informs Reese he is bringing in Robin tomorrow for a full work up including scans.

Dr. Halstead returns to Jessie’s room and gives her the exciting news that her pregnancy hormone level is up is up and indicates that she is indeed pregnant but other tests show there is a thickening of the blood, meaning she is more likely to clot; but they will monitor her closely and continue to hydrate her and keep her on a blood thinner.

Barry (James Vincent Meredith) comes in with a patient who needs help but Maggie tells him the patient will only get basic care because they have no insurance and chastises him saying to bring in a patient that does have insurance so she can hire more nurses. Dr. Manning tells April that Nancy’s test results are back and something doesn’t make sense, it is appendicitis but her charge says her chart says her appendix was removed when she was a teenager. Natalie says that isn’t the only thing that is off and shows April that her tubes were tied which doesn’t make sense since Nancy claims she always wanted to have kids. Dr. Manning and April go to tell her, she needs to have surgery on her appendix but before they can finish explaining, it ruptures and they rush her to the OR.

Dr. Manning and April visit Mrs. Janine Buckley to inform her that Nancy had emergency surgery to have her appendix removed. She finally admits that back home, there was this judge that forced her to make a decision that if she wanted to keep Nancy at 14, she had to agree to have her sterilized. Dr. Manning feels that Nancy deserves to know the truth, but Mrs. Buckley feels if she knew the truth of what she did to her it would only bring her more misery and she begs them not to tell her.

Dr. Reese comes to assess Arlo, who begs her not to touch him saying she will be contaminated with Uranium. She offers to remove his restraints, if he promises to stay calm; he will if they won’t touch him. Dr. Reese and Nurse Doris undo his restraints slowly, but she jumps back holding the canister in his pocket, shaking as he rubs his wrist.

Connor orders them to make room in the schedule as Robin is coming in for sure tomorrow for the scan. Will comes into the Dr’s lounge and Connor reveals that Robin isn’t having a good day; he needs a consult and Connor agrees to help. They show Jessie her scans and that she has a clot, and assure her that surgery isn’t necessary yet, but will give more medication and keep a close eye on her in the ED.

Dr. Ethan Choi comes to see his patient Eddie Janichek, revealing that all his tests come back normal, other than he is mildly anemic. He is frustrated with no definitive answers but Dr. Choi doesn’t want to sent him home feeling that way and suggests a neuro consult. Maggie comes to see Sharon Goodwin in her office with an idea for hiring more nurses for the ED, saying if they motivated more paramedics to bring in patients with insurance to Chicago MED. Maggie feels it would be pretty simple to motivate the paramedics to bring the patients to them.

Dr. Will Halstead learns from Dr. Natalie Manning that up until 1973 women in North Carolina could get sterilized without their consent and tells him about Nancy’s case; Natalie has no idea how she is going to break the news to Nancy as Will squeezes her hand for encouragement. Dr. Sam Abrams (Brennan Brown) says Janichek shows no signs of deficits, and tells Choi to stop wasting his time.

Dr. Daniel Charles finds Dr. Connor Rhodes and tells him that Robin told him she got arrested for shop lifting. Dr. Charles is concerned that Connor doesn’t have the capacity to take care of Robin but he insists him and Robin are fine; but Daniel isn’t convinced.

Jessie’s stats are falling as the clot in her lung has progressed and she is in respiratory failure, they need to intubate. Dr. Connor Rhodes informs the husband they need to operate and he pleads for them to just save her. During surgery, they have no choice but to open her chest.

Daniel visits his distraught daughter, Robin who says she doesn’t know what to do and feels she will never get past this. She feels she has become someone who needs to be taken care of and pitied and she is drowning. She is tired of being a disease and wants to be a person again. He asks her how she wants to do that.

Dr. Rhodes comes to see Mr. Roe and informs him that they had to open her chest after all, they were able to remove the clot successfully, and there was no indication that the pregnancy was affected. Jessie wakes up and her husband assures her she will be fine. Will thanks Connor, saying they are nice people, who were really put through the wringer today and it makes you realize how small your own problems are and sometimes things really do work out.

Maggie is telling Nurse Monique what to do, when Dr. Noah Sexton returns to work; Sarah isn’t sure he should be back, telling him he doesn’t look so good. April isn’t so sure that Dr. Manning should tell Nancy the truth about her sterilization; but Natalie says she has every right to know.

Dr. Stanley Stohl (Eddie Jemison) is surprised to see a new TV being brought in for a new pizza room for the paramedics.

Dr. Sarah Reese asks if Arlo has been agitated at all, or any need for restraints and since there wasn’t, she feels no need to see him before he is transferred to the psych ward. Dr. Choi talks to her about Eddie Janichek and agrees to do an evaluation on him. When he becomes aggressive towards her, she sprays him with the pepper spray, Dr. Choi tends to him and tells Sarah she should go.

In Sharon Goodwin’s office, Dr. Choi says he flushed Mr. Janichek’s eyes and there is no sign of external injury and his vitals are stable, he is lucid. Dr. Stohl says he is extremely pissed off after a doctor attacked a patient. They are ordering an abdomenal CT since he hit the gurney as he fell to make sure there are no internal injuries, there was no head injury so no signs of a concussion.

Peter Kalmick (Marc Grapey) from the legal team is worried so Sharon orders a PAN scan just to make sure they don’t miss anything. Sharon asks Sarah for an explanation for her behavior but all she can do is apologize and she is suspended until further notice and hands her pass over to Sharon. Sarah is ordered to go home. Meanwhile, Barry is quite impressed with the incentive Maggie came up with for the paramedics to bring over the insured patients to Chicago Med.

Dr. Natalie Manning sits with patient Nancy Buckley and tells her about how her tubes were tied when she was 14 but tells her she needs to ask her mother about if she knew about it herself. She leaves the room, giving Nancy time alone with her elderly mother. April wonders how Nancy could ever forgive her mother, saying she lost her baby but can always have another; but if that was taken away from her, she doesn’t know if she could ever forgive.

Connor returns home and calls out for Robin, only finding a note. Meanwhile, Daniel drops Robin off at the airport, saying it will be very hard on Connor as he cares about her a lot. She knows but feels she has to do this and get away. Daniel says he will miss her and to be sure she says hi to her mother; they share their goodbyes and Robin leaves.

Dr. Choi comes back to Sharon’s office and informs her and Peter that Eddie Janichek has a dangerously enlarged spleen that needs to be removed, but the deficiency is easily treatable with regular enzyme replacement treatment. Sharon asks him to inform the patient and Choi says Mr. Janichek will find this to be good news as he has been suffering for a long time without an answer and they never would have found the diagnosis if Dr. Reese hadn’t done what she did – she might have saved his life.

Connor is furious when he finds Dr. Charles, saying he would have tried to change her mind. He says Robin will inform him where she is when she is ready but Connor blames him, saying this was all Daniel’s idea, since he never wanted him to be with her. Connor promises he will find her and bring her back without his help. Dr. Charles gets several messages on his phone and quickly goes to see Sarah crying. He sits on the couch beside her, as she cries out, asking, “What have I done?”
