Grey’s Anatomy begins tonight with Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Dr. Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) talk about Dr. Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams), but are interrupted when one of the kids come to the kitchen.

At home, Betty (Peyton Kennedy) and Dr. Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) are arguing over Betty slipping up and taking drugs. Dr. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) tells them to stop yelling so they don’t wake up Leo, he tells Amelia not to be giving her crap for slipping up; but she feels Owen should be backing her up. Owen tries to bring her to bed and they will fix things in the morning, but Betty calls her a hag through the door, making Amelia yell and Leo starts crying.

Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) is in bed with his new wife, Dr. Jo Wilson Karev (Camilla Luddington); she is unable to turn him on, so she talks to about pitching work stuff. She suddenly makes him feel dirty, gets dressed and leaves.

Dr. Atticus “Linc” Lincoln (Chris Carmack) approaches Alex at the hospital, learning the funding for his project was frozen. He’s disappointed but perks up when he sees Meredith. Dr. Taryn Helm (Jaicy Elliot) and Linc are surprised to see Meredith dressed differently and with makeup on; both not denying she looks good.

Dr. Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) and Dr. Carina DeLuca (Stefania Spampinato) talk about their dad and that she needs to go home for a while; when DeLuca see Meredith’s face, he says she looks, “very capable” today. DeLuca’s sister says she doesn’t want to leave town just as he is about to make a great big fool of himself.

Ben Warren (Jason George) arrives with the EMTs bringing in a patient who got the worst of a fire. Owen says bring him straight to the burn unit. Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and DeLuca take in the next ambulance patient, and Bailey is able to coax her son, Max into the hospital after he was scared seeing his mom collapse outside the building fire.

Owen is surprised to see Betty at the hospital. Amelia informs him she has been grounded, but Betty says she has been abducted. Amelia asks Dr. Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli) to get a tox screen and asks Owen to watch Betty while she gets changed; Owen agrees that Amelia is a little extra.

In the lounge, Amelia asks Meredith if she is going to a funeral as Maggie feels she looks pretty. Alex comes barging in saying she looks weird. They all realize she is going on a lunch date and all Meredith knows is to go with no preconceived notions. She asks Alex what is the minimum amount of time she has to spend if she hates him on sight? He says 30 minutes, but she places bets and thanks him for making it fun.

Maggie and DeLuca work on Natalie Forrester (Kimberly Christian), who as soon as she is revived needs to have her son, Max with her because if he doesn’t know what is going on, he gets scared. She passes out in front of him as Maggie books an OR immediately.

Meredith arrives at the restaurant and meets mystery man (Josh Radnor).

Bailey sits with Max telling him his dad is on the way. Andy Herrera (Jaina Lee Ortiz) offers to stay with him until Social Services comes. Alex and Dr. Dahlia Qadri (Sophoa Ali) deal with another patient who was inside the fire; he just wants to go to class and can’t afford the xrays. Maggie informs Natalie’s husband of her heart condition and don’t know how much damage there is until they get in there. Maggie tells Max as much as she can, in the simplest terms as possible. Dean Miller (Okieriete Onaodowan) wants to stick around to see how everything turns out, particularly interested in Maggie.

Bailey catches Ben in the hallway, forcing him to reveal what is wrong with his hand. He has his first injury, a burn from the heat on a door. He rushes off back to Station 19. Meanwhile, Alex and Qadri find a bleb in Julius’ lung and if it bursts, his lung collapses, he dies.

While in surgery, Maggie reveals Avery is on a spiritual journey; Bailey says it sounds like more of a spiritual spring break. Maggie refuses to go downstairs and tell that little boy his mother is gone and will fight for her.

Meredith seems to be enjoying her lunch. He is a software guy who is actually making her smile.

Alex tells Julius he needs to do surgery, but he refuses and orders Alex not to call his mom or he will sue them. Alex says he is 18 and they have to discharge him in spite of it being against medical advice. Jo finds Alex and feels he owes her an apology from last night, thinking she would want sex from him to get something from the chief, as all she wants is orgasms. She is completely unaware that Dr. Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) is standing right behind her as she said it.

Amelia is waiting for the drug test and Schmitt finally returns with a urine sample, misunderstanding that it was for Betty to take; not him! Betty is furious, but Amelia figures if she isn’t lying it shouldn’t be a big deal.

Meredith is having a great conversation, she makes a call to work to shift things around. John admits to Meredith that the woman at the bar is the one he was actually supposed to be on the date with; Meredith giggles thinking she must be on her date with “her John.” They both laugh out loud.

Julius continues his breathing as Alex talks to Richard, who reminds him that being chief is being backed in a corners and finding creative ways of getting out. Alex says he is quitting and Richard can have the position; Richard says no, he has to kick its ass.

Bailey checks both Miller and Andy before they can leave back on the ambulance. Dean wants to know if Maggie is single. She wants to know if it was the best way to use resources by letting Warren and Hughes be the first to enter the fire, suggesting they might want to protect those hands.

Both Meredith and John send their messages to the dates they were supposed to meet, spelling words wrong. They watch as the others laugh it off and just like that, they are yesterday’s news. Together, they escape the restaurant unnoticed.

Amelia admits to Owen she doesn’t know how to raise a teenager. Owen hopes he has turns out okay but as he talks about parenting, Amelia walks away. Maggie finds Max hiding under her desk and she has him sit down. She sits down in front of him and begins to tell him in technical terms but once again, his father interrupts them, saying Max hides when he gets scared. Maggie confronts him, saying he probably gets that from him and suggests that Max needs to be prepared for what is to come with his mother. He feels that slim chance is still a chance and tells Maggie not to speak to his son.

Qadri is trying to stop Julius from leaving. He knows he can’t be treated for a preexisting condition, so Alex says he wants to check him over before they release him. He takes a scalpel and cuts him, saying he has a chest wound and doesn’t understand how they missed it. Alex says this is covered under insurance and anything else they find in there. Qadri says she has to report this, he says, “you just told the chief!”

Dean introduces himself to Maggie, asking about Natalie. Andy watches as he asks her if she would like to have dinner with her sometime. She begins to laugh and says she had a fiance named Dean once and takes off running when DeLuca informs her Natalie has coded and is circling the drain.

Richard follows Alex to the OR, knowing Qadri reported him; he reprimands him for stabbing a patient, feeling this will get him out of being chief and possible medicine for good. Amelia seeks advice from Owen’s mother, who tells her to be firm.

Maggie and DeLuca come to see Mr. Forrester and tell him that it is time. She begs him to tell Max, that this is his last chance to say goodbye. DeLuca offers to take Max to get something to eat.

Meredith and John continue to enjoy their time together, walking outside. He says single moms make them desperate. She reveals she has 3 kids but doesn’t feel they are holding her back. He realizes he said the wrong thing. She admits it was fun and tells him to take care; walking away confidently.

DeLuca takes Max up to the rooftop, where he gets to see the ocean, he knows his dad is lying. DeLuca explains how his mom died and his sister wouldn’t tell him until she was with him to hold him. Max freaks out and begins running on the roof believing his mom is already dead. Max runs into the elevator and closes the door before DeLuca could reach him.

Meredith returns to the hospital, Andy thinks she looks nice. Maggie hates people, revealing that the dad is lying to his kid about his mom dying. She wants to know from Amelia how when she sees a disaster coming, and break patient confidentiality, should she do it? Andy says it really isn’t her business. Meredith says the date went horribly because at the end he says he hates kids and finds single mothers desperate. Amelia tells her not to give up; Andy says she dodged a bullet.

DeLuca desperately searches the hospital, stops long enough to tell Carina she is a good sister and rushes off again to find Max. Richard and Alex work on saving Julius as he explains how he will tell the ethics committee how he saved his sister’s life by stealing a car because an ambulance cost too much money.

Betty admits she had been smoking weed, Amelia grounds her, tells her she needs to go to meetings, attend school and after 1 month they will talk. Betty calls them “lame!” and both Amelia and Owen smile at being called that.

Julius knows Alex stabbed him for him to get the surgery but his mom will be crazy happy that he got the surgery covered. Alex promises he won’t get in trouble since he is the chief. He apologizes to Jo for calling her a “hooker”. He says he didn’t used those exact words. As they head to the elevator, she recognizes a voice and is thrilled to see Linc, who calls her “Brooke” and they rush into each others arms.

Bailey wants Maggie to keep her posted about Natalie’s condition and him not telling Max. Maggie doesn’t think Max should be surprised like that and he deserves a heads up. She is still venting about Jackson and blurts out to Meredith that Dr. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) is pregnant with Owen’s baby and she just broke protocol by telling her and neither Owen nor Amelia knows. DeLuca informs them Max is lost; he is seen running to the streets.

THE END!
