How to Get Away With Murder (HTGAWM) begins tonight with Annalise (Viola Davis) waking up to a call from Bonnie (Liza Weil), she declines the call, but sees what time it is and rushes to make it to the press conference about investigation of Nate Lahey Sr. (Glynn Turman) death. Nate Lahey (Billy Brown) and Annalise cannot believe what they are hearing, and how everything is being blamed on Sr.

Bonnie walks into DA Ron Miller’s (John Hensley) office where Asher (Matt McGorry) are also watching the press conference. Ron asks Asher to leave, informing Bonnie that Nate is coming back to the office this week. She is sad for him, but she is still angry. The ME continues, saying the cameras had malfunctioned that night and there were no other witnesses; toxicology reports say Sr hasn’t been taking his medications for the months he was prescribed them; even Emmett Crawford (Timothy Hutton) believes this is a bunch of bull. Since both officers have excellent service, this is ruled as a justifiable homicide and the investigation is closed.

Annalise says they fought too hard for them to give up now. Laurel (Karla Souza) sits in Frank’s (Charlie Weber) room and watches Gabriel (Rome Flynn) wondering how long they are going to do this. Frank tells her to stop freaking out and go to class, while he watches Christopher. At school, Michaela (Aja Naomi King), Connoe (Jack Falahee) and Gabriel bicker about where they going to end up and if Annalise even cares about them at all; Laurel suggests she doesn’t as she cancels class on them again.

Annalise arrives at Governor Birkhead’s (Laura Innes) office, demanding an inquest into Nate Lahey Sr’s death. Birkhead thinks it sounds like a conspiracy theory and their project will go away the second the public hears about this; she wants to know if she wants that and asks for Annalise’s trust.

Connor and Oliver (Conrad Ricamora) meet with the minister in order to get married in the church. Connor brings up the point that a lot of Presbyterian Churches don’t marry gay couples, and the only reason they are there because it was the only church available for that day and Oliver’s mom wanted a church wedding. The minister wants to know why Connor wants to get married there if it feels so wrong to him. He tells her it’s because he loves Oliver. She smiles and tells them she cannot wait to marry them.

Tegan (Amirah Vann) meets Annalise in her car as Annalise reveals the Governor played her, and she was a fool not to see it coming. She put the target on Nate Sr’s back and the Governor took the first shot; she begs Tegan to help her blackmail her way back into Caplan & Gold. Tegan suggests she is only tired and needs to give her mind a rest.

Nate begs Miller to do an inquest into his father’s death, saying they murdered his dad and made him look like an animal and if he doesn’t, his dad’s blood is on his hands too. Bonnie doesn’t want Ron to do it because it will hurt his career, but he has to wonder if it has to do with her being pissed at Nate. Connor and Oliver come home to boxes of evidence and transcripts and are told that Miller is doing an inquest into Sr’s death. Before they get into the doom and gloom, Oliver wants one nice night before the wedding, shaking off the hetero and be super gay for one night. He simply wants to forget about how depressing the world is for one night; Gabriel arrives and they get to work.

Laurel wants to tell Annalise, but Frank feels Gabriel is her worst nightmare; Laurel pleads with him to tell her the truth because if it weren’t for Annalise she wouldn’t have Christopher.

Ryan Stack (Clint Jung) finishes up a meeting with Emmett, after which Tegan says he wouldn’t be a good replacement for Annalise. She doesn’t want Emmett to hire anyone, but he reminds her about Antaris. She says that was the FBI and she isn’t going to take the fall for that all on her own; he says if she doesn’t like eating crow for the firm than maybe this isn’t the job for her.

Annalise goes to the clinic where she talks about the inquest. She finds out that DA Miller is the only one allowed to question witnesses. Bonnie catches Asher and Connor trying to sign into her computer, she suggests if Annalise wants her help, she should return her calls. The good thing about an inquest is that hearsay is allowed; Gabriel says that statics claim Correctional Officers commit domestic abuse at least twice the national average. The one guard is a saint but the female guard beats her husband, and there are photos to prove it. Annalise tells Miller to get her to lie on the stand first, so they can prove she is a violent liar.

Miller questions her, she says she didn’t hit him. The judge tells him to stop if he can’t prove she actually hit him. Annalise tries to talk to Miller, who tells her to stand down as he isn’t one of her students. Bonnie tries to speak to Annalise but she is too busy, off to a meeting with Birkhead. At the meeting, she informs Annalise they won’t be moving forward with the project. Annalise tells the Governor she cannot wait to take her down, confronting her on what she has done to Nate Sr. and now she is doing the same thing to Annalise. She tells Annalise she dug into her past and found her adoption paperwork and reminds her that she just got her reputation back, does she really want to lose it again?

Bonnie comes to see Annalise, revealing she knows about the Governor pulling the offer. Bonnie admits she is worried Annalise is drinking again. Annalise says she isn’t drinking and tells her to get out, but Bonnie finds 3 empty bottles of Vodka in the bottom of her trash can. Bonnie reassures her that she can get there again, she was good for so long. Annalise reveals that the governor knows about the adoption; Bonnie pours her a drink, saying one more won’t hurt!

Gabriel is looking at pictures of Michaela and Laurel when Frank calls Annalise’s phone, Bonnie answers revealing that Annalise is drinking again. The next morning, Bonnie leaves a list of AA meetings and aspirin. Ron Miller calls her, saying he found no way to win this thing other than putting her on the stand, Bonnie smiles at Ron. Annalise takes the stand, and talks to the jury, she fights the good fight for Sr, so much so she is told to get off the stand by the Judge.

Outside the courtroom, Asher tells Bonnie that he likes Miller for her; promising not to say anything to anyone, just that he’s happy for her. Bonnie sees Nate sitting there alone on the bench but doesn’t approach him. The jury finds there was no criminal negligence or acts committed and concur with the ME’s reports regarding Nate Lahey Sr.

Michaela sits with Nate, saying his dad deserved so much better, offering anything he needs. Nate thanks her.

Tegan tells Annalise that she spoke to the people in London, who wouldn’t reveal anything, but her IT guy found something. She believes Annalise is right about the governor and she needs to be the first person they burn at the stake. She hands her the file, saying Annalise is going to owe her someday.

All the students go to the club, and Michaela says they need to embrace that Oliver and Connor being in love. Asher informs them that Annalise is not going to work for the governor as Birkhead pulled the plug on that project. They drink shots to a world that isn’t so terrible all the time.

Annalise arrives at C&G, barging into Emmett Crawford’s office, saying he won’t hire her back. She throws the file down saying she knows all about his misconduct. She admits it was going to be blackmail, but he isn’t to blame, it was her; reminds her of her husband. She tells him she is desperate and will do whatever she can to fix this; promising to fight this firm so he doesn’t have to play the good little boy anymore.

Connor and Oliver are kissing outside the club when a man walks by saying, “Get a room, faggots!” Connor asks him to say that to his face and when he does, Connor attacks him physically as Oliver cries out for help and for Connor to stop. Once home, Connor tells Oliver to say he fell off a scooter; Oliver gets why he was upset as the world is so awful right now. Oliver jokes that the guy was lucky his big muscles stopped him from killing him.

Asher doesn’t want Michaela from stop cuddling him, once he falls asleep, she sneaks out and knocks on Gabriel’s door asking him to check on Asher in the morning. He invites her in and shows her the newspaper article and how good they look together; he says they would look good together dancing, wanting to go to the wedding with her. Asher is listening from his room as Gabriel tells her that anyone who doesn’t know how great she is, isn’t paying attention. He leans in to kiss her and she initially pulls away but ends up giving in.

Annalise goes to see Nate, revealing she got her job back at C&G as its the only way she can keep fighting. She says it’s her fault his dad is dead as it was the governor’s plan all along. She hates herself and she is going to keep fighting. Nate tells her he is going to help her fight and they are going to make her suffer.

Laurel is furious with Frank as they see Gabriel and Michaela kissing at his place. She feels Annalise needs to know right now, but Frank says Annalise isn’t in a place to hear this right now. Laurel says if he doesn’t tell her, she will; just then Bonnie walks in and wants to know what they are talking about, but sees the computer screen.

Flash forward to the wedding day, where Bonnie is in the snow, with the baby crying in the background. Bonnie says, “Listen to me real close. Take his car and him, and drive away; we can figure out the rest later. Do whatever you need to pull yourself together and I will take care of everything. Just trust me!”

THE END!
