Chicago PD begins tonight with Adam Rusek (Patrick John Flueger) finding Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) sitting on the couch, due to her insomnia. Adam invites her to the Island for the weekend with his uncle; she wishes they could go right now. Adam frets about having to leave the Intelligence Unit and go to the 16th district; he disagrees that Kelton (John C. McGinley) would break up a team with the highest clearance rate in the city. Hailey says he is adorable when he is stubborn. Suddenly they get a call on the radio about an armed robbery in progress.

Hailey calls in that there is a man down at the scene, they demand the man standing behind the van to back away from the van and raise his hands but from the other side of the van, a gunman opens fire on them. Hailey calls it in saying they are pinned down; once the van leaves the area, Hailey tells the victim lying down to keep talking to her as help is on its way. He is able to say he was delivering for a pharmacy before they start to lose him.

Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) gets up to speed thanks to Adam. Hailey informs Voight and Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) that the driver is in surgery at Chicago Med, but with blunt force trauma to the head, it could go either way. Rusek says they stole about a quarter million dollars worth of drugs; Jay confirms this is the third van heist in the past month. Voight wants to talk to the manufacturer and the shipping company, wanting to know their routes and who was on those days, feeling if they figure out how they did it, they will learn who did it.

At the precinct, Jay shares with the team everything he has learned from Venture Shipping; there is nothing to suggest it is an inside job. The best footage they have to go by is not very telling, but according to the driver the man who beat him spoke English and implied he was a local. Adam knows this was about the opioids but other drugs were taken too, there is nothing to identify the drugs as they all have the same stamp on them. Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) and Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) reveal the van was hiding in the backyard of a drug den owned by the Night Lords. Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda) has a junkie who grew up with these guys and Voight tells him to take a run at him.

Antonio talks to Voight as his CI told him the Night Lords have a large number of painters right now; a guy named Eric Shaw (Nathan Sutton) aka Time Bomb is selling the stuff. He has done two stints, one for armed robbery and another for assault; they believe he is offender 1. Voight says their priority is to get Shaw off the streets, telling Antonio to work with Adam. Voight admits he has a problem with Antonio being around opioids.

Adam meets with Eric Shaw, insisting he needs a steady supply; when Adam tries to negotiate he is told Shaw is only there as a favor to Tommy. Adam tells him to call him when he is ready. Meanwhile, Dep. Superintendent Katherine Brennan (Anne Heche) walks into Voight’s office showing him the front page saying Oxy-Kelton. He reveals they are circling a dealer in the Night Lords reminding her that this takes time as bad guys don’t run on an election schedule. She gets that he has bad blood with Kelton but if he wants to keep the IU, he needs to make peace with him. She knows the good work they do but Voight says it is not that simple.

Adam interrupts them, saying Shaw called to set up the deal; Voight wants Jay and Hailey to ghost. Adam is concerned that Shaw said no guns but brings two men who are armed. Adam is forced to show the money first, after which Shaw tells him to hop in. Hailey feels this isn’t good but Jay feels this is Adam’s call. Hailey doesn’t like it, calling for patrol cars to do a rundown Princeton. Suddenly Shaw calls the deal off when he sees a squad car drive by, leaving Adam furious.

Back at the precinct, Adam demands to know what the hell they did. He learns Hailey made the call, saying she made it too early and if he was in distress he would have informed them; Hailey tells him that she made the call and he needs to move on. Adam confronts Hailey after Jay heads upstairs, questioning if her call had to do with them as a couple.

Voight wants to know if they can fix this with Shaw, but Adam says based on his text message, he is guessing the deal is off. Voight tells the team to start with the bottom, find one of Shaw’s crew and flip them. Kevin knows where they are swinging the pills; Kim saying it is a house that has been up for demolition for about a year and it is registered to Shaw’s uncle. Voight tells them to get eyes on the house immediately.

Outside the house, they continue to wait for the buyer but suddenly a man comes out who has been inside for more than two hours and they feel he could be a runner. Hailey is going to stay with the buyer as they think a girl just gave him cash. He bolts when he sees Adam and Hailey, Kim and Kevin give chase as Adam and Hailey stop the woman named Gina Reilly (Mimi Michaels), finding a bottle full of pills in a paper bag. Kevin and Kim chase the man up to the subway, but just as Kim is asking them to shut down the tracks, he is electrocuted.

Voight arrives on the scene, learning the runner’s name is Joe Powell (Matt Philliben) aka J-Dog. He has a sheet of 3 DUIs and battery of a police officer. He has been running with Shaw’s crew for the past couple of years. Hailey is talking to Gina who swears she isn’t a drug addict; Antonio calls Hailey out, saying those pills are not opioids, but pills that cost about 40 grand a month and Gina is dying.

Hailey returns to interrogation, saying she made a few phone calls and she knows that Gina is sick. Hailey removes her handcuffs, Gina reveals the medication she bought helps produce an enzyme her liver can’t produce any more and the meds keep her alive. Hailey wants to know how she knows Joe Powell, but she admits she didn’t really know him, just where to go; a friend told her where to get them. She isn’t under arrest but Hailey wants her to level with her. Hailey says the three bottles are taken in the last heist she found on Gina, showing her the picture of the driver. Gina feels if she helps Hailey, she dies.

Voight walks with Hailey as she admits this is a tough one but they still have a job to do. Kim finds out that Bob Reilly (Drew Johnson) and Joe Powell are cousins. Kevin confirms that Bob didn’t have a rap sheet until 6 months ago; which is about the time Gina got sick. His stats match those of offender 2. Voight says they are going to hold Gina for 48 hours and keep her away from phones. Adam and Jay sit outside, taking pictures of Bob; they keep a loose tail asking what the address belongs to and they learn it is Venture Shipping. They discover Reilly is the inside man, who started working there 3 months ago.

Hailey thinks Shaw handles the drivers while Reilly grabs the drugs for his wife, Gina. Voight wants to know how she is going to prove it, Hailey says they will get it on Gina’s phone. Hailey releases Gina, saying she is free to go and no charges will be presented considering everything she is going through. Hailey tells Gina it is in her power to call these people and make them stop the robberies.

Adam and Hailey listen to phone calls where they are not able to pay their bills; Adam reveals his dad is still paying off his grandfather’s cancer treatment and he died 5 years ago. Bob calls Gina, who begs him that this has gone too far, feeling there has to be another way. She tells him she loves him, agreeing with what has to be done. They try to figure out what the big job is, thinking it has to be a pharmacy they are going after. Voight tells the IU to get to Shaw’s house and need to know where the cancer drug is in the city. Antonio stops them as dispatch reveals there is an armed robbery in progress at a pharmacy; the IU rolls out to the scene.

Rusek and Hailey enter the pharmacy, finding Bob Reilly attending to the pharmacist; Hailey confirms he is gone as Adam tells him to get on his knees. They watch the footage, where Bob freaks out on Shaw after he shot the pharmacist. Adam interrogates Bob, saying he knows his story and what is going on with his wife and he would like to help him. They need to start with the gunman who killed that man; even though they know it is Eric Shaw.

Adam says he is looking at three counts of robbery and felony murder; which means he never sees his kid again as a free man and his wife dying alone. Bob refuses to say anything about Shaw, making Adam realize that Shaw still has his wife’s drugs. Bob says there is nothing he can say that will change his mind and asks for a lawyer.

Adam says he loves his wife too much to jeopardize her health. Adam tells Brennan and Voight that the robber made off with a lot of opioids and about 6 months work of the cancer drug. Voight tells Adam to notify Gina and have a talk with her. Hailey shows her the picture of the dead pharmacist but she refuses to talk. Hailey says right now Bob is going away for felony murder, even though he isn’t the shooter he is still legally responsible. Gina didn’t know the specifics about the robbery, she did the math figuring out that Bob was just doing this to desperately keep her alive.

Gina admits that Bob never said Eric Shaw was involved but she knew because Bob says if anything ever happened to him, she should reach out to Shaw. Hailey asks her to reach out to Shaw and get him talking about the pharmacy heist; if she helps him Bob will get manslaughter and be out in 3-4 years. Gina is concerned she won’t get her medicine if they arrest Shaw, but Hailey says the pills are stolen and now evidence. She promises to help Bob if Gina does this and she agrees as Bob would do the same thing for her.

Gina arrives at Shaw’s place and he invites her in. She says she talked to Bob for like 2 minutes, to get him a lawyer and get her meds from him. She says the police came by but she didn’t talk to them because Bob kept everything hidden from her. Shaw places the blame on Bob, saying it was his idea to do the robberies, but Shaw slips and says he shot the pharmacist when he reached for his gun. Voight wants to move in, but Hailey wants to give Gina another minute so he asks everyone to stand by. Gina asks for the meds as Shaw tells her to go upstairs and when she refuses he attacks her and Gina uses her safe word.

Adam and Hailey rush in, going up the stairs but they clear one room before Shaw opens fire. He says he will blast Gina as Adam demands him to drop his weapon and let Gina go. Hailey reveals where Shaw is located to Voight as Adam realizes Hailey is wounded. She tells Adam to pull out the piece of wood in her leg, he tells Hailey to stay there as she begs him to keep Shaw talking. She tells him she is okay and moves. Adam keeps talking to him as Jay is just outside the door. Jay signals Hailey as Adam keeps him distracted. Hailey throws up a broom that Shaw shoots at, giving Jay enough time to take him down. Adam begs Shaw to give him a reason not to shoot him.

Hailey tells Voight her leg is fine as narcotics found the opioids in the attic. Adam wants to bring Gina to the hospital but she says she’s had her fill of doctors. She feels this is her fault, thinking if she didn’t get sick Bob wouldn’t have had to save her. She just wants to see Bob, Adam agrees to take her. Voight goes to Brennan’s office, saying he wants to use some of the drugs seized at the house for an operation but she took control. He asks if she already handled the problem and she says she did as she watched her mother suffer through it and had to sell her house to pay for her meds. Voight reminds her she is better than Kelton.

Trudy Platt (Amy Morton) wants to know how Hailey is beside her leg. Hailey thought she could pull it off and find a balance between the job and Adam. Trudy advises her that if Adam is the one then make it work but that means one of them has to get out of Intelligence. It is a very tiny needle she is trying to thread there. Hailey says if neither one of them is willing to make that sacrifice than Trudy tells her that what she has isn’t worth compromising her career for.

Adam finds Hailey before she leaves, saying it was a long day. He was hoping they could go back to his place and talk about everything but she thinks they should talk right now. Adam closes the door as Hailey admits she cares about him a lot but… He says he knows she does but it is hard working and being together. She knows it’s more than that, something he reluctantly admits. He suggests they take a break and she agrees. They hug each other tightly as they both know it is done.

THE END!
