The Prodigal Son begins tonight with Malcolm Bright (Tom Payne) exploring the scrapyard where he found the station wagon his father used and blood all over the back. He hears a noise and finds a man standing in the middle of the junkyard. When he asks if he owns the junkyard he fires shots towards Malcolm over and over, narrowly missing him. When it is daylight, Malcolm brings Gil Arroyo (Lou Diamond Phillips) there, who demands to know why he was there; forcing Malcolm to explain that he has suppressed memories from his childhood, but a week before his father was arrested he took him on a trip with the car. Gil wishes he sounded crazy but they found a body of a woman in one of the crashed vehicles.

Dani Powell (Aurora Perrineau) checks on Malcolm, who downplays being shot at. Dr. Edrisa Tanaka (Keiko Agena) reveals they don’t know much about the victim, other than her dying from a few weeks ago. Malcolm finds prints, feeling the killer locked their victim in the vehicle and turned on the compactor. JT Tarmel (Frank Harts) returns after he investigated who shot at Bright. He says the name on the ownership of the yard doesn’t exist as Malcolm wants to know why someone would buy a junkyard to hide a woman’s body or the station wagon. Gil suggests this body is pretty fresh and his dad, Dr. Martin Whitly (Michael Sheen) has been chained to a wall for 20 years but Malcolm feels his dad is connected to this or his father knew the killer. Suddenly they are informed that there are more victims scattered among the yard.

Jessica Whitly (Bellamy Young) sits with her daughter, Ainsley Whitly (Halston Sage), reviewing the questions she is going to use to interview her father. Ainsley is told if she doesn’t have a plan to make her father look bad, then he will make himself look good; pleading for her to understand. Ainsley confirms those are the questions she has sent to the institution but not the ones she is going to ask. Ainsley is warned that she thinks she is smarter than her father and will be gravely mistaken.

Tanaka reveals the bodies from the junkyard, saying most of them are from 5-10 years ago, but some of them are more recent. She admits that Malcolm is right that the bodies were placed in the cars and crushed alive in the compactor. Malcolm says the killer may be avoiding the kill as he placed the bodies in a remote area and must have been shamed as he buried the bodies. Malcolm believes the killer couldn’t watch his victims die as it is a coping mechanism. He reminds them that this guy may be different than his father but that doesn’t mean his father isn’t somehow involved.

The lab found something that might connect the case. The blood in the vehicle didn’t match any of the Surgeon’s victims nor the victims they found today. Tanaka is interrupted when another body is brought in, bringing it up to 8 as Bright says there is a serial killer who has been killing for years and they are determined to end this now.

At the psychiatric facility, Ainsley is preparing for her interview with her father, admitting to Jin (Raymond Lee) that she has really thought this is through as he reminds her if at any point she wants to end this, they can. Tevin (Matthew Maher) spots Ainsley and is very excited to see her, saying he has so much to say and wants to be on TV; something that spooks her but she denies her feelings to Jin, saying to bring in her father.

The body count is up to 9 as they review the cases, Malcolm feels the body usually kills in one location and moves the body to another place, making JT feel the profile is a mistake. JT confronts Gil when he says that being a profiler isn’t an exact science as Dani is furious that she is from the Bronx and all the victims are from there; she is taking this personally as Gil tries to convince Malcolm this is very personal for him too. They are going to check all the local shelters since it seems he is getting people when they are most vulnerable. Tanaka did another pass on the station wagon, revealing there was a pocketknife left in the car. It causes Malcolm to remember those moments with his father and running through the woods. He isn’t okay and feels there is only one person who can tell him why.

Ainsley begins her interview, talking about his victims and the gruesome details but he manages to turn it around saying how he saved a young boy’s life. He admits he isn’t a perfect person and has a really bad stigma on him because of his mental health issue. What consoles him is that as a doctor he saved thousands of lives so if they are judging him by the mark he leaves on the world, his would-be positive by a lot. He tells her that she is very good at her job and she is his legacy, talking about the surgical procedure he perfected and it is still called by his name. Asking Ainsley if that counts for anything.

Malcolm knocks on the door, Ainsley confronting her brother about interrupting her interview. She admits she is getting nowhere as he is twisting everything she is saying; Malcolm welcomes her to his world. She is staying for the questions he has for their dad, promising to shut off the cameras. Dr. Whitly is very excited about Bright bringing him a serial killer case. Malcolm confronts him about the camping wagon along with 10 dead bodies. Martin says he has never been to the Bronx and they know he didn’t kill them but they believe he knows who did. Malcolm knows they are connected, showing the knife that was found in the car as Dr. Whitly says that is his son’s knife. Malcolm wants to know why he would want the knife, demanding to know what happened that weekend. Martin suggests they table this conversation as Malcolm is taking over his sister’s time and there is only so much of “dad” to go around.

Ainsley suggests they could team up as their father is very open with Malcolm. She doesn’t want him digging into his youth trauma but convinces him to stand behind her as she interviews “the Surgeon” again. Ainsley wants to discuss “Malcolm Whitley”, calling him one of his victims. She reveals all the ailments tormenting Malcolm and really pushes that this shows Martin was a terrible father. He starts screaming at Ainsley, demanding her to call him a terrible father again. Ainsley is very pleased that Jin got that on camera, as Martin tells her it is very good to have a plan.

Suddenly the alarms sound in the institution and a bloody guard on the ground is dragged away by Tevin.

Malcolm is on the phone with Gil who just spoke to the warden who says a patient stabbed a guard and has a knife. They know the patient has been in the facility for 15 years, went in as a juvenile after he killed both his parents. They are trying to unseal his file with Malcolm hoping he can figure him out. The guard, Mr. David (Esau Pritchett) tells the siblings that they are safe with the door locked tight and all they can do is wait for SWAT to arrive as Ainsley realizes the guy is the one who wanted to be on TV earlier.

Ainsley’s phone goes off and she ignores the call as Malcolm says they are going to pay for that later. Ainsley wants Jin to go down the hallway trying to film anything he can as Martin tells David to not punish the woman for having ambition. Martin says he likes Jin and he can tell that Jin really likes her. Ainsley wants to know if he knows the serial killer that Malcolm is chasing. He deflects as Malcolm demands an answer.

Ainsley sits down and turns the camera back on while Jin is still out in the hallway. Martin says people who suffer from the same illness seem to seek each other out, and in this case, Martin was a mentor of sorts but before he can say a name, Tevin screams for Ainsley to let him in as he has so much to say. Unfortunately, as Jin is ordered to come back, Tevin has a key card and manages to break into the room, stabbing Jin. Malcolm is able to seal the door with a crowbar as Ainsley frets over Jin who cannot breathe. Martin comments on how eventful their day is, just watching Jin suffer.

Ainsley tends to Jin as David tells them SWAT and the EMS will be there in 15 minutes but Martin informs them that Jin will be dead in 10 as he is going to die from his lung collapsing. He reminds his children that he can perform a simple procedure on Jin as he only needs a knife a feeding tube. Malcolm is against the idea, insisting they wait for the medics. She pleads with Malcolm who says he can do the surgery with his father walking him through it as they are not going to give Martin a knife. Martin asks David to grab anything from the medical station, handing Malcolm a scalpel and with shaking hands he prepares to save Jin but keeps having flashbacks to the camping trip remembering what his father said to him then.

Ainsley begs for the guard to uncuff her father so he can save Jin; against Malcolm and David’s better judgment he removes Martin’s cuffs. He rubs his hands and takes the knife from Malcolm, who reluctantly hands it over the red line. Malcolm holds the blade, saying, “let’s get to work!”

Ainsley watches as Martin cuts into Jin’s chest and quickly turns on the camera, filming what her father is doing. She asks him to describe what he is doing, something he is very pleased to do. Malcolm orders her to stop filming but she tells him that is her job and Malcolm should do his. Gil calls, revealing that Tevin hacked his parents to death like Lizzie Borden. Malcolm figures out that he can use Tevin’s desire for fame, hanging up on Gil without explanation. He requires David’s taser.

Jessica comes to see Gil, who reveals there is a lockdown at the hospital and she shouldn’t worry because they are safe. He reminds her that she cannot blame herself and her kids are no longer kids. He tries to assure her that Malcolm as a good head on his shoulders and won’t do anything stupid but in the meantime, Malcolm takes a camera and proceeds into the area where Tevin is lurking. He calls out for Tevin, but is distracted by a boiler; Tevin sneaks up on him but Malcolm is able to convince him that he is doing an interview. He tells him to look directly into the camera and is able to taze him before running off.

Martin continues to work on Jin as Tevin is contained and they only have to wait for the paramedics. He is thoroughly enjoying that his daughter is recording all of this, revealing that Jin is going to be okay. Ainsley amazed by her father’s work, even praising him with gratitude. He says it was all his pleasure and calmly hands the scalpel back to Malcolm who is very leery of his father; Martin saying they make a good team!

Outside the hospital, Ainsley tells her mom that Martin saved Jin; which doesn’t surprise her at all. Malcolm keeps playing his father’s words in his head when Gil walks in. Malcolm confirms that his father and this serial killer are connected, as his father mentioned St Edwards Hospital where he did his residency. Gil tells him to pull all the employee records from that time but should skip the doctors. His father let it “slip” that it was someone he mentored and someone he could easily manipulate. It dawns on him that Tevin is a lot like the person they are looking for. Malcolm realizes this stabbing is something Tevin did because Martin asked him to so he could play the hero on national TV.

Malcolm quickly calls Mr. David, who reveals Tevin admitted to all of it being Martin’s plan and he cannot speak to him as his father was placed in solitary confinement. He urgently needs to talk to his father but told him he can’t speak to him for a long time to come.

At home, Jessica is very sarcastic with Malcolm, as he tells her to enjoy her “I told you so” but even she couldn’t have foreseen this. She knows this is what he does best because when he has all the power over these people, he ruins them. Malcolm knows the story very well. Jessica says he may have ruined his childhood but it didn’t ruin him as he is very tough. They suddenly hear ringing, both realizing it is coming from the basement. Malcolm and Jessica walk towards his father’s old office and he takes a hammer to the brick wall his mother created to block out the room. They find the phone ringing but it had been disconnected. Malcolm picks up the phone as a man says he was an old friend of his father’s and it was good to see him in the junkyard as it has been too long. Malcolm demands to know how he knows him as the man tells him it was on the camping trip; shocking Malcolm.

THE END!
