Jessie Nevin needed a new kidney. She was on the transplant list for a new one, but she wasn’t considered a high priority what with her previous drug use. Jessie’s many years as an addict and the fact she hasn’t fully gone through her rehabilitation meant she was a high risk. People just assumed that she could fall off the wagon at any time and so under normal circumstances, she’d have to wait years for her new kidney. Jessie didn’t want that for herself and she turned to her family in her hour of need. She had them get tested and Nic was willing to donate her kidney to her little sister while it technically wasn’t considered safe for her. Their father, on the other hand, had claimed that he was getting tested and then stalled on telling them if he was a match or not.

Their dad claimed he was fully committed to being there for them and that he wanted to support Jessie, but Nic couldn’t help having doubts. She knew her father was a bit of a flake and he had most left raising Jessie to her sister. It set off a pattern and Nic thinks her dad was doing it again with this transplant. Like he wanted Nic to do it because he cared too about himself to hand over a kidney. Its what Nic assumed was happening and she tried to ignore her doubts even as she went to work. Nic and all available parties at Chastain were needed because the hospital was running out of blood. Bell had called an emergency blood drive to raise their much-needed blood supply and while people were coming in for the free cookies it at least worked in resupplying the hospital.

Bell had also canceled surgeries that weren’t needed or consider an emergency, but Conrad later had a patient who needed blood and lots of it. The patient was found after he had gotten lost on a camping trip and for some reason he was severely depleted of blood. No one could figure out why because he had superficial scratches on his arms and wasn’t bleeding from any orifice. Only the patient continued to lose blood and it was just getting worse. Conrad feared what would happen to Fritz if he didn’t receive intervention and so he rushed this guy into an emergency treatment process. He was placed in an incubation chamber and was being treated when he began screaming in agony.

Fritz was suffering from abdominal pain. He was most likely bleeding out on the inside and so Conrad called on AJ to perform surgery. The doctor had to find out where this blood was coming from and stem the bleed, but he was on his last bag of available blood and so he was running out of time. Conrad tried to lower the pressure of the chamber and when that failed he moved onto the next extreme. He decided to donate his own blood. Conrad was a match for Fritz and he’s didn’t mind breaking the rules because when he gets desperate he’s willing to do anything for the patient. Conrad often drags his friends along for the ride and so this time was probably the first time that Nic wasn’t caught up in this mess on top of everything else.

Nic had talked to her father and he told her that he wasn’t a match for Jessie. It had broken Jessie’s heart because she admitted she couldn’t stay somber when her life was good and so now she didn’t know what was going to help her stay clean, but Nic went back to the clinic to check on her own results and all the man behind the desk saw was her uniform. He thought Nic was asking about a patient and therefore he admitted to something he shouldn’t have. The guy said that Kyle was a match and that they were just waiting for him to return their calls. This ended up throwing Nic because she now had proof her father lied to her and to Jessie. And so she finally had enough of a father that wasn’t really a father at all.

Kyle had chosen himself over Jessie. He knew what donating his kidney would mean to both of his daughters and he chose to lie to them because he had been too cowardly to even own up to the truth. So Nic confronted him. Kyle was watching tv at the house when Nic came blazing in and he demands to know why he lied. He tried to explain himself and when that didn’t work he said that he wasn’t going to give a kidney to a drug addict. Jessie could use again and destroy her brand new kidney. Kyle suggested that he wait to donate until Jessie could prove she would stay clean and that’s when Nic butted in because she had to remind her father that anything could happen in that six or twelve months that Kyle wants to test Jessie. Jessie could die from complications in that time and it would have all been Kyle’s fault.

Kyle came back into their lives claiming he wanted to help them and it seems like he wanted to say he’d be around, but he didn’t want to actually work on being there for anyone. He was still selfish and Nic threw him out of her house because she was just done. Nic was going to handle Jessie on her own and she didn’t need anyone. Not even Conrad. Conrad had given his blood to a patient and his friends covered for this risky procedure. AJ and Okafur had handled everything and they also got around to talking. AJ was adopted and he admitted that he sought out his biological parents. His mother as it turns out was a doctor and she had been in medical school when she got pregnant. And neither of them wanted the child to interfere with their studies so they gave AJ away.

AJ also said that his parents are still together and that they got married as well as have three kids that they kept. The other children hadn’t come in the way of their career and so AJ has three full-blooded siblings that know nothing about him or why he had been tossed while their parents kept them. It had come as a rude awakening to AJ. It made him realize that he shouldn’t be hung up on people that ultimately didn’t matter in his day to day life. Okafur also had been a great supporter. She was learning to relax more and she had befriended someone at the hospital because she though Shira was just goofy. And unfortunately, Shira was stealing pain meds while everyone was focusing on just her jokes.

And Dr. Bell ran into an ex who recently learned she had syphilis, but luckily he doesn’t have it and he somehow managed to turn a close encounter with VD into something sweet with Dr. Voss. She suddenly saw him in a new light.

And while Nic didn’t want to accept help, it had been Alec that sought her out and he proposed that she simply buy a kidney for her sister.

THE END!
