The Johnstons are renovating their kitchen, Amber wants the counters lowered to make every day living easier for them. And at the same time, they are going to get the floors repaired. In order to do that, they all have to move out. So, Amber thought for two days the family could go tech-free, camping in the backyard, to remove themselves from social media. Trent thinks the children are going to think taking their phones away is child abuse.

Amber gathers the children and tells them her plan. Alex comes out with an immediate no, his social life is 50% on his phone. Even the dogs don’t look like they are happy about the idea. Amber tells them it is good for the mind and body. Trent says he is happy they are ok with it. Meanwhile, they think he is going to have the hardest time.

Before they get their new cabinets, Amber and Trent have agreed that they will demolish everything in the kitchen – it saves them about $2000 in total. Amber is ready to have a kitchen that not only looks nice but functions properly. Trent thinks it is going to be weird not to have stools in the kitchen, he has had them his whole life. Everyone helps out. Amber and Trent think the more hard work they put into a project the more they will be appreciative of it. All in all, they got a lot of work done in one day, but not as much as Trent wanted.

The next day, they are packing up the living room – Jonah and Alex vanish and are having to be called back. The girls are not impressed.

It’s the day the floors are being done. Amber pulls out her lockbox and collects everyone’s cell phones. Turning in the phones doesn’t come easy, especially for Trent but Amber is looking forward to some good quality time. The first thing to do is to set up the tents. Trent uses a machete to cut a watermelon, all the utensils are in the house. Trent has fun with the machete while the kids try to break the lock in the lockbox. Elizabeth’s friend Brice drops by to help them construct a makeshift shelter.

Alex thinks living in the backyard is miserable and he spent all day and night trying to crack the combination. Brett is also over, he is Brice’s identical twin brother. Amber is making turtles on the BBQ, it is vegetables roasted in meat patties.

This is a transition summer for the family, with Elizabeth and Jonah going off to college. Amber starts to talk about a road trip to California, it is something she did when she was younger. She wants to rent an RV and drive down the pacific coast highway. Trent brings up the conference, and there are two rules. Alex and Emma can’t leave the hotel. The other kids Trent says he doesn’t care, no rules they can do what they want. Everyone eats dinner together by the fire.

It’s nighttime, they have a fire going and everyone is sitting around it. Trent can’t believe that everyone made it through the day tech-free. Alex and Emma head to bed, the rest follow.

The next morning Jonah is the first one out, then Anna and the rest follow. Jonah says he didn’t sleep well. Trent says they are all humidified and icky. Alex just wants to go back to the house and get his phone back. Trent, Anna, and Emma go to the house and get a ball. Trent makes up teams. Alex and Jonah say that spending time with family is overrated.

Alex opts not to play and Trent is upset that he went to Amber to get out of it. Alex gets upset because he plays this every day in PE. In the beginning, nobody really wanted to play, but once they got started everyone was enjoying themselves. When Alex sees the family having fun, he joins in. Everyone got very competitive before you know it, both teams wanted to win. The family are done playing ball, they have two hours left before they can go into the house. Everyone starts to break camp and put all the stuff away.

Everyone goes back into the house and they are thrilled until the varnish smell hits you. The floors look super nice and Trent says he is not sleeping outside when they put in the little kitchen. The kids are begging for Amber to open the lockbox, Trent wants his first, she makes sure he gets his last. Amber still thinks it was well worth it to spend the two days together, they saved money, got a new floor, new kitchen and they can still afford to go on vacation. Amber tells Trent that he should thank her for this wonderful family experience.
