During the most recent episode, he talked about the moment that his young daughter saved his life. The child refusing to cuddle and saying, “You don’t smell like my daddy” would be a turning point in AJ’s life.

Insecurity Issues and Undeserving Delusion

DWTS spoilers reveal that AJ admitted that he has always struggled with insecurity. He also had the delusion that he didn’t deserve anyone’s love or attention.

Then, each time he would feel uncomfortable, his reaction was to find a way to numb it. The drugs not only numbed his pain and disguised his insecurities, but it blocked everything out… literally.

AJ talked about the first time he tried cocaine, which was after The Backstreet Boys filmed the music video, “The Call.” After they were done shooting the video, AJ tried the drug and it would create a two-year blackout. He still remembers nothing from that period of time.

‘You Don’t Smell Like My Daddy’

Dancing With the Stars spoilers reveal that AJ overdosed twice. Up until almost a year ago, he had been in and out of recovery. However, there came a time when something happened that would force him to take sobriety seriously.

He credits his young daughter for saving his life. He explained that his daughter refused to cuddle with him. Then she said some powerful words that shook AJ to the core,

“You don’t smell like my daddy.”

Dancing With the Stars: Dedication and Courage

AJ and his dance partner, Cheryl Burke, dedicated their performance to all those struggling with addiction. There was also a lot of gratitude and both AJ and Cheryl are thankful that they have a second chance at life.

He admitted that recovery is not easy, but it is worth it. When host and executive producer Tyra Banks asked if AJ had any advice for those struggling to stay clean, he said, “With a little courage, you can overcome!”
