Tutuola is listening in on a case, a woman, Joelle, claims that she didn’t know her husband Leon was getting paroled, she says not until Tutuola told her. Then she says, what she didn’t want is for her son, Andre, to see his father get shot and bleed out on the kitchen floor. Then we see a flashback where Tutuola shot Leon in his kitchen.

Apartment of Irene Nowak, she is in bed with her partner, Dwight. Her son and daughter come into the room because they are hungry, her son, Will, who is older says he will make breakfast. Dwight is harsh with him he is not his biological son. Later, at the table, Dwight grabs Will’s arm very hard and calls him a thief, says he stole his bacon. Will says it is not possible he is a vegan, the man eventually lets him go.

Will ends up in the emergency with bruising, a nurse called the precinct because of the boy’s condition. She tried to call the mother and heard a domestic situation. Because there is a little girl in the apartment, they are worried about sexual abuse. Rollins goes with Kat to the apartment, the landlord lets them in. Inside they find the mother on the floor, she is bleeding from the head but she is alive.

The school is holding the kids, the mother has woken up, she is in the hospital, she says she passed out, but she has a black eye and bruising. At school, Will says that he fell off the monkey bars. Kat is at the school, a school official tells her this is not the first time that there has been an incident at the school. Will’s biological father shows up at the school to pick him up, he is a cop, he tells Kat that Dwight has anger issues. He says he should have fought harder for custody.

Benson tells Sonny about the case. Benson then goes to see Irene and tells her that she is concerned about her children. She suggests that the kids stay with her ex-husband and give her a break. Irene insists that they are going to be ok.

Back to the case with Tutuola, the man’s son says he wasn’t afraid when his father put a knife to his neck because he would never hurt him, then he asks Tutuola why he shot his daddy. Later, Tutuola goes to see Benson and updates her on the case. He says Joelle has her eyes on the prize. She tells him to take care of himself, there is more to life than this job.

There is an alert at Irene’s building, Benson and Tutuola head over there. Dwight is dead, he is on the bathroom floor naked, water in the bathroom and a hairdryer close by plugged in; he was electrocuted.

Irene is in the station, she tells Benson it was an accident. Her lawyer is present, so is Rollins. Irene says that she found him on the floor, she closed the door, she didn’t want LeAnne to see. Will wasn’t there, he stayed with her ex overnight. Sonny speaks to LeAnne alone, she says Will was in the house the evening that Dwight had his accident. Will is at the station with his father, they take him to the interview room. It turns out, Irene called her ex with she found Dwight. Wil says he was there, and he did, they were arguing again. His father tells him to shut up and asks him how dumb he is. Sonny and Benson are outside the room listening in, he says he was afraid of that. Benson says Will was used as a punching bag and he finally hit back.

Irene maintains that Will wasn’t in the house. Benson asks her to take a breath and start over. Irene admits that Will was there but when she tries to say more, her lawyer tells her to stop, she is going home.

Sonny says he doesn’t want to charge Will, but he needs more. Rollins heads to Irene’s apartment, Kat sits down with LeAnne. She tells her that Dwight was yelling at Irene just before his accident.

A woman shows up at Sonny’s office, she says she was told he is the lawyer on Dwight’s case. She is Sherri, his wife, she drove there to find out who murdered him. She says he was a good man, then she starts to cry and says her baby will never meet its daddy, she is pregnant.

Irene is back in the interview room with her lawyer, Sonny, and Benson. Sonny says Will and LeAnne’s stories don’t match. Then Sonny tells her about Sherri, they were married, she thought they had broken up years ago. Sonny tells Irene that she has left him no other choice, he will be charging Will as an adult.

Will is being interviewed by Will, he says his mother wasn’t in the bathroom, he swears. He says LeAnne had to use the bathroom, Dwight told him to shut up, she could use the kitchen sink and he would deal with him and Irene later. He saw the hairdryer, he saw him in the tub, he just snapped. Sonny tells him a lawyer, he sticks to that story, there goes self-defense.

Supreme court, the coroner says he thinks Dwight was lying in the tub when he was electrocuted. The ex-husband gets on the witness stand, he says Irene called him to get Will because there had been an incident. He says his son wouldn’t hurt anyone unless he was absolutely forced to. Benson sits with Irene, she says she grew up in a house where someone got beat every single day and she swore that wouldn’t happen to her kids. Irene is on the stand, she says she wasn’t in the bathroom but she heard Dwight and Will screaming at each other. She says she didn’t call the cops right away because she was afraid. She says she didn’t know what to think, she didn’t want her son to be charged with murder, he didn’t kill Dwight, because she did.

Irene finally tells the truth; LeAnne had to use the bathroom, Will went in. Will had the hairdryer, Dwight kept taunting him and said he didn’t have the nerve to drop it; and when he finished his bath he would take care of Will and Irene, they would be sorry. Will said he would never let anyone hurt his family again, she couldn’t let him do it, so she did it. Her lawyer calls her names and tells Irene that she is making a big mistake, she fires him. Sonny tells Irene that he is getting her a new lawyer.

Back to the supreme court, Irene says that she took the dryer out of her son’s hand, she threw it in. Sonny says they will accept a guilty plea of criminally negligent homicide from Irene and not pursue charges against Will. Irene pleads guilty. The judge sentences Irene to a year in prison and tells her to get counseling with her children. Dwight’s wife is in the courtroom, she starts yelling and saying that Irene killed her husband.

The city settled with Joelle for two million dollars, Rollins tells Tutuola that it has been an impossible summer. Tutuola says the last thing he wanted to be is a trigger-happy cop who kills a black man and here he is.

THE END!
