On tonight’s episode called, “The New Deal,” as per the ABC synopsis, “Coulson and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. are thrust backward in time and stranded in 1931 New York City.

New York City, 1931. NYPD Captain William Doyle of the fourth precinct and several of his men were waiting to make a deal with someone because they were dirty cops. They accepted payment for looking the other way. They thought tonight of all nights would be the same thing and instead, a group of men wearing weird clothes came in. They came in. They opened a suitcase with a weird device inside and then they used the device to steal the face of Doyle and his men. This group was disturbed by someone, but they killed him and they were able to maintain the cover. This group went on to be cops.
What they did had created a disturbance. This disturbance was felt in the modern time and SHIELD Agents are now trying to fix it. Simmons even has a plan. She later told her team that the Zephyr was turned into a time machine. She said it picks up on moments called the Tides. Fitz had named it so and they were what other people would call a disturbance. Simmons wanted to fix it. She also offered her team the chance to get Coulson back and Skye/Daisy had jumped at the chance. They agreed to wake the Coulson LMD. It wasn’t him. The real him was dead and so this clone really was just someone who looked like him and had some of his memories.
Coulson had uploaded his memories after Framework. This new Coulson was remembering everything and unfortunately, he figured pretty quickly that he wasn’t the real deal. His hand had been a big clue. It hadn’t felt the same and he couldn’t put a name on it until Daisy told him the truth. She hadn’t wanted to leave him wondering. It had been shocked at first and then the new Coulson did what he was great. He became a part of the team. He agreed to help them with the time disturbance in 1931 and so the team took the Zephyr to that time. Daisy, Mack, Coulson, and Deke went to the police station.
They posed at Canadian Mounties. It worked with the horrible badges that Deke had printed out for them and the only lip they got about it was with Daisy. The cops back then hadn’t believed a woman could become a Mountie. Daisy had to threaten to beat up an officer to be taken seriously and so the team was eventually allowed in to look at the bodies. The bodies of the erased. The bodies were all missing their faces and there was a liquor nearby. The team found out the police officers were meeting with bootleggers. These bootleggers had carried a box of liquor and one of them had the swordfish sign on it. This was important to Coulson because he remembers SHIELDs’ history.
S.H.I.E.L.D had started out as the SSR. The SSR had operated out of an illegal bar during prohibition and the password to get inside was “swordfish”. Coulson thought the bar might be the next place for the aliens. He and Mack went to the speakeasy. Daisy and Deke stayed behind to investigate the bodies and they ran into an issue when several officers came by. The officers split up the pair. One took Daisy outback to investigate a supposed truck in the area and the other caught Deke alone in the building. Deke may not be much of a fighter, but he was scrappy and he got away from the Chronicoms in time to warn Daisy. And she used her powers on the one guy she was with.
Both Daisy and Deke got away. They even took a Chronicom prisoner. They went looking for the other members of their team and it seems they too found trouble. Coulson and Mack were asking around the speakeasy and the guys there almost killed them for it. They were asked for Jimmy Bottles. Jimmy Bottles had just disappeared and so it was suspicious. Coulson and Mack had a whole room turn their gun on them. Coulson wasn’t afraid of dying because he was already dead and so he fought back. Mack was forced to follow. They turned around the situation and then they demanded to know why Jimmy Bottles was at the police station. They were looking for the people who killed Koenig’s man (the Koenig of this time).
Coulson and Mack learned that Jimmy Bottles was at the police station bribing the officers to look the other way as they supplied the governor with booze at his upcoming ball. The Governor was FDR. The police officers were the only ones that were going to be armed at the event and so the agents figured out what was going on. The Chronicoms stole the face of Doyle and his men because they planned on assassinating a president before he’s president. Mack and Coulson went to the party. They alerted their team and so later Deke and Daisy showed. They had already dropped off their Chronicom with remaining members of their team.
Simmons figured out how to get the Chronicom to talk. She overwhelmed his system with computer data and it forced their hostage to talk. Only he got too overwhelmed. He kept repeating “target” and “FDR” and finally he repeated the words “Freddy”. It turns out FDR wasn’t their target. Someone named Freddy was and the team at the party didn’t realize that until it was almost too late. They spent most of the night watching FDR. They kept him safe and all along he wasn’t in danger. FDR got to leave the party safely. Coulson even got to talk to him and it was a big deal because he was a huge fan.
Simmons called her team. She told them the real target is this Freddy and they got to the man in time. Freddy’s friend had been shot. He was going be next when the team arrived and they got him out of there. Daisy and Coulson dealt with the Chroni-cops. They defeated them and they took the injured woman back to Koenig’s for help. The rest of their team wasn’t there. Mack and Deke were missing with this Freddy. Freddy was supposed to make a stop. He was killed because someone to prevent him from what he was about to do and it turns out his mission would lead directly to Hydra.
Freddy’s full name is Wilfred Malick. He was the father of Gideon Malick who was the head of Hydra and without Hyrda there would be no SHIELD.
To save SHIELD, the team needed to first save Hydra.
Also, Mae went missing from her rehabilitation chamber and now she was hiding from Enoch.
