The Young and the Restless (Y&R) spoilers update for Friday, September 18, teases that several Genoa City residents will battle suspicions. At Chancellor Communications, Chelsea Lawson (Melissa Claire Egan) fills Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson) in on the fake reason for her visit.
Billy notes that Theo Vanderway (Tyler Johnson) isn’t in charge of drumming up ad dollars and his plate’s pretty full right now anyway.
Once Chelsea’s gone, Billy looks uneasy. Chelsea makes it back home, where she activates the listening device app on her phone. Chelsea’s able to eavesdrop on Billy’s conversation with Theo, who fears he did something wrong by bringing Chelsea back to the office. Billy insists no harm was done, so it’s fine.
After Theo leaves, Billy talks to Alyssa Montalvo (Maria DiDomenico) about the story they’re working on. Alyssa has crucial news since Billy’s private investigator found the wife of the guy who went missing in Vegas.
This woman is willing to go on record, so Billy’s eager to expose Adam Newman (Mark Grossman) and “shine a big, bright light” on Adam’s darkness.
At Sharon Newman’s (Sharon Case) place, she’s on the fence about what to text Adam. It takes a few tries to settle on what she wants, but Sharon ultimately finds the right words. The text says, “I know you think we crossed a line — but I needed that as much as you did.”
After Sharon sends the message, Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle) pops in and wonders if this is a bad time. Sharon promises it isn’t and puts her phone away, though she seems disappointed to see there’s no response from Adam yet.
Victoria seeks updates on how Sharon’s handling her health before she mentions Adam’s therapy, which Sharon argues she “absolutely cannot discuss.”
Victoria thinks back on how she talked to Sharon after the stabbing, but she feels like Adam’s a completely different story. Adam’s an “impossible project for anyone.”
Back at the penthouse, Adam catches Chelsea off guard with his arrival. Chelsea impresses Adam when she fills him in on the listening device she planted at the Chance Comm office.
When Chelsea takes Adam’s phone to download the app, she spots the text from Sharon and flips out. Chelsea wants to know what line Sharon and Adam crossed, so he insists it was just a conversation that got too personal.
After they unloaded on each other, things got “intense” and Sharon opted not to be Adam’s therapist any longer. Adam mentions Sharon’s setback being part of all this.
Chelsea learns this conversation happened when they were alone at the motel. Adam assures Chelsea all they did was talk. “With or without your clothes on?” Chelsea snaps. Adam insists nothing happened that Chelsea should feel threatened by – and that’s the truth.
It dawns on Chelsea that Sharon was in Adam’s room when she showed up there. Chelsea lashes out in Friday’s Young and the Restless episode, but Adam explains that they kept quiet because they knew how it would look.
He didn’t want Chelsea jumping to conclusions like she is right now – and Sharon felt the same way.
Adam notes that Sharon has enough to deal with due to her spreading cancer, so Chelsea calms down and agrees it’s best for Sharon to focus on getting well. Talk turns to Billy and Alyssa again, so Adam wonders what they’re plotting.
Chelsea fills Adam in on Alyssa’s vindictive expose along with Billy’s PI finding the missing Vegas guy’s wife. Alyssa spoke to her – and she’s willing to talk. Adam muses that things aren’t going to turn out the way Billy expects.
At the cottage again, Victoria suggests Sharon went above and beyond by flying to Kansas for Adam. Victoria’s whole family is concerned about Sharon’s well-being, but Adam always bites the hand that reaches out to him.
Victoria recaps some of Adam’s criminal behavior and argues that he’s just going to strike again eventually. She wouldn’t be surprised if Adam’s already planning his next attack. Sharon wonders if that’s why Victoria is really there. She questions if Victoria thinks Sharon will tell her what Adam’s up to next.
Victoria is taken aback by Sharon’s decision not to treat Adam anymore. She thinks that’s a relief, though it must be difficult for Sharon. Victoria reminds Sharon that Adam has Chelsea to lean on.
They shift gears to discuss how Victoria’s making it work with Billy and the kids. It’s going well, but Victoria’s hopeful that Sharon will stick to her decision not to treat Adam.
Victoria points out that she considers Sharon family. “But not Adam?” Sharon replies. Victoria brushes off the question and leaves, so that gives Sharon a chance to check her phone once she’s alone.
Sharon looks disappointed again since she still hasn’t heard back from Adam. Later, Chelsea pounds on Sharon’s door until she opens up. “Stay the hell away from my fiancé! Understood?!” Chelsea snarls.
Alyssa’s still at Chance Comm, where she’s bummed to learn Lily Winters (Christel Khalil) won’t be joining their meeting today. Billy lets Alyssa know Lily supports the story as long as their lawyer looks over every word. They talk about Billy’s desire to get the truth out there, but he fears Adam may be onto them.
Billy explains that Chelsea was there earlier and adds that her excuses didn’t pass the smell test. They think Chelsea was trying to pump Theo for info, but he doesn’t know anything.
Alyssa wants to be the one to fly to Vegas and talk to the missing guy’s wife, so she dashes off to make travel arrangements.
Theo returns and talks to Billy about Chelsea potentially adding some fashion content to their platform. Billy gets that Chelsea is a persuasive and beautiful woman, but he warns Theo about the seriously bad man she lives with.
Theo mentions running Alyssa’s name through a search engine and assumes she’s working on the huge story. Billy promises it won’t be long until Theo’s curiosity is satisfied since there’s been a big break in the case.
Afterward, Billy’s alone when he takes a call from Victoria. They talk about the story, which Billy views as more of an indictment. Alyssa’s fired up to fake Adam down. Billy says this is a scathing, feature-length psychological profile on Adam and every illegal, disgusting thing he’s ever done in his life.
Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) will be a key player since he’s the Dr. Frankenstein who enabled this monster to begin with. Billy notes that’s the working title: “The Making of a Monster.” Meanwhile on Friday’s Y&R episode, Adam’s at home listening to Billy and shakes his head disapprovingly.
Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford) enjoys some lovey-dovey moments with Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) in the park – complete with cloud watching and gushing over their love being as real as it gets.
Phyllis goes over how great things are going, but Nick thinks it sounds like Phyllis is trying to convince herself. Phyllis is bracing for disaster since it’s who she is, but Nick doesn’t feel that way at all.
Nick’s happy and that’s what he wants to focus on, so Phyllis wonders if he’ll teach her how. Nick thinks a getaway would be nice, but Phyllis is too busy thanks to The Grand Phoenix Escape Club.
When Phyllis frets about always managing to destroy everything, but Nick gives her a pep talk. Phyllis agrees she’s not going to screw things up this time.
Nick joins Phyllis in her suite, where they enjoy some grub and talk about how Phyllis has been reining herself in. Phyllis is surprised to hear that Nick thinks she’s a good influence on him, too.
Talk turns to Summer Newman’s (Hunter King) love life. Despite their issues with Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor), he’s preferable to Theo. Phyllis is grateful to Nick for believing in her and promises she’ll never betray him. “I’m not gonna let you down,” Phyllis vows.
