In tonight’s I Love A Mama’s Boy episode, Shekeb is thinking of taking the next step with his girlfriend Emily. He’s considering proposing and so he went with Emily to jewelers. They looked at rings together. Emily believed the depth of his love was compared to how much he was willing to spend on a ring and to her that meant the bigger the better.
She didn’t want anything under three carats when two is usually considered big enough. Emily just reminded him that there was financing and she also said in an aside that it doesn’t matter if he has to sell his lungs. He should give her the ring she wants. Shekeb didn’t have this problem with his ex-wife because back then he was marrying someone his mother approved of and so it had been his mother who went with him ring shopping.
Back then, it had been easy. They went in and picked a ring and left. There was no back and forth. Shekeb didn’t have that chance this time because his mother Lailah hates Emily. She once accused Emily of poisoning her with a birthday cake. A cake she had actually tasted and which she enjoyed until she found out it was from Emily. Emily can do nothing right in Lailah’s eyes.
Lailah would probably also have an opinion about Emily wanting a big ring and so it’s a good thing she wasn’t involved in the process. Lailah still sees Shekeb as her little boy. She doesn’t accept that he’s a grown man or that he’s going to love who he wants to love and then it wasn’t up to her. She wanted him to marry someone from their culture.
They were Middle Eastern. Emily was Asian but just not that Asian. Emily was also demanding. She wanted Shekeb to move out of his mother’s house. She wanted him to be independent and he wasn’t really ready for things like that. None of the mama’s boys were ready for it. Matt was creepily close with his mother because she homeschooled once it was revealed he had a learning disability and so now he refuses to leave her.
He was even building a home on the same property so that he could be closer to his mom. His fiancé Kim has accepted this and she also accepted them living with his mother Kelly while they wait until their home was finished. But then Kim received a wonderful opportunity.
Kim was offered a chance to transfer for her job in Texas. It would only be for a year and it could lead to even better things for Kim down the road. Kim told Matt about it. He freaked out and he’s refusing to move in spite of it being just for a year because he said he can’t leave his mom. His mom wasn’t a widow. She still has her husband.
It’s not like she’ll be left living on her own and still, Matt refused. He thought it was selfish of Kim for asking him to leave his mom for a year. Matt decided to discuss it with his father. His father was someone he could turn to for advice and his mother was someone to turn to when you needed someone to believe in a wild dream. Matt went golfing with his father. He told his father about Kim’s job offer and his dad was against it.
His dad told him that he was locked in with both the house as well as his own job. He also didn’t want Matt to break the news to his mother because the dad knew it would end horribly and he wanted to be out of the town if Matt told her he was leaving. The situation with Shekeb was different. His mother was just against Emily for being of the wrong race.
She was against her because she thought Emily wouldn’t value hard work and that she would use Shekeb for his money. Lailah said Emily shops. She doesn’t pay for anything. She wants Shekeb to take care of her and in a sense she was right. Emily wanted to give up her job when they got married. She wanted to work inside of the home and to raise kids.
Not that she’s ready for kids. Emily wants to stay home to take care of her dogs and she has no ambition for her own career. She also wanted Shekeb to spend forty thousand on a ring she wasn’t going to help pay for. Emily expects things to come to her and Shekeb was starting to realize that he might not be able to afford her. Then there was Theous.
His mom is his best friend because they love hanging out together and right now his mom is out of commission because of recent knee surgery. Theous missed his mother so much that he was invited her to stay a few days with him and his fiancé. It would have been longer but his fiancé put an end to that. Tia said a few days because she was used to his mother letting herself in with a key to their place.
It happened when they were dating. His mother would just come in and she would even sit on the edge of the bed while Tia was naked. It made Tia uncomfortable. She doesn’t want to deal with that again and so she put a time limit on her future mother-in-law staying with them. Kim wishes she could have put a time limit with her own future mother-in-law. Kim and Matt spoke over dinner and he told her in no uncertain terms that he wasn’t going with her. He also wasn’t going to stop her from going because he wants to support in whatever she chose.
