In tonight’s Smothered episode, Jason is keeping secrets. He didn’t tell his mother Toshiko that he came close to marrying his fiancé and the mother of his child. His mother had to find out at dinner one night with everyone. Toshiko believes that it’s better to not get married than to get married for the wrong reasons and have a nasty divorce.
This could even be the reason why Toshiko hasn’t reached out to Angelica or Sunhe. She ignores text messages. Angelica’s mother has sent Toshiko photos of their mutual grandchild and she’s received nothing back. It turns out Toshiko doesn’t text. Her phone isn’t equipped for it or at least that’s what she claims and so that’s why she’s never responded or reached out. Toshiko has to answer for all that during dinner with Angelica and her family.
Angelica’s family wants what’s best for Angelica. There was also the baby to consider. Jason proposed to Angelica and the two of them want to be a family with their child, but it’s clear they weren’t getting support for this from his mother. His mother Toshiko doesn’t want him to get married.
She finds Angelica bossy. She reminded him that he’s been divorced already and that he couldn’t afford another divorce much less a new ring for Angelica. Toshiko absolutely didn’t want him getting married again. She also didn’t bother bringing up the grandchildren. Grandmothers are usually excited about grandchildren and wanting them to have everything and this grandmother didn’t want her grandchild to have two parents in a committed relationship.
Angelica may be bossy. She’s may also be a momma’s girl. But Jason was a momma’s boy. He started agreeing with his mother the moment she told him she didn’t think he should get married again and he never once told his mother that he loves Angelica. He instead talked about divorces.
He talked about not wanting the hassle and so he had one foot out already when his mother whispered poison into his ear. Jason was taking advice from his mother as Lauren was doing a pregnancy test. She had fertility treatment. She’s been trying to get pregnant for the past two years with her wife and so you would think she would do the pregnancy test with her wife and she did not. She did the test with her mother.
Lauren did the test with Lisa. The test came out negative and so Lauren broke down in tears. She felt very disappointed she wasn’t pregnant. She blames herself. She said she felt broken because she couldn’t get pregnant and it was her mother who wiped away her tears. Lisa also broke down in tears.
She really wanted the treatment to work for her daughter and it broke her heart to see her daughter so sad and what made everything worst is that Lauren then had to go home to tell her wife. Lauren had to say out loud again that she wasn’t pregnant. The test was negative and it might also lead to another fight with her wife because she’s going to wonder why she wasn’t a part of that moment when Lauren found out.
Another mother and daughter duo discussed a big issue. Cristina told her mother Kathy that she wasn’t going to buy the house next to hers because her husband Carlo said “no” and so Kathy said who cares what he thinks. Kathy convinced Cristina to sign the papers without telling him. Both mother and daughter signed. They agreed to co-owned the house.
They were just going to tell Carlo when it was a done deal and that really was a crossing a line. Carlo didn’t want to live near his mother-in-law. He wanted some distance because he knew he never would get any peace if he lived that close to Kathy. And Kathy knew this and she still ignored his feelings on the matter because she wanted her daughter/clone nearby.
Kathy and Cristina were both going to get in a lot of trouble with Carlo once he finds out what happened. Another mother and daughter duo in trouble was Dawn and Cher. The two of them had baby Belle’s first dental appointment without Belle’s father being there. Jared told Cher not to do any of the firsts without him and so he was disappointed. He also felt this wasn’t the first time this happened.
Cher has gone back on her promises numerous times once she starts talking to her mom. The two of them get together. They decide things and then they leave Jared scrambling. They also weren’t done with leaving things at the dental appointment. The mother and daughter duo now want Cher to move back to Florida so that she could be closer to her mom.
This is a problem because Jared signed a contract that said he has to stay in New York. He has another year on the contract and their original plan was just to test the waters in Florida. They were supposed to rent once his contract was up to see how things feel. Now, Cher is saying they buy their house down there and they rent it out for the year they have left in New York. She said that way they could just start making their lives work from now and Jared was against the plan.
He was tired of being in a marriage with three people. It was never just him and Cher. There was always Dawn there as well. Dawn wants to be fair and yet at the same time she and Cher make decisions and they just expect Jared to go along with it. And well, Jared is sick of that.
Lauren went home to her wife. She told her that about the failed pregnancy test and how she felt she had to comfort her mom and so her wife said that’s a good reason for why they should leave her mother out of it. Laura Leigh wants it to be just them. The couple agreed to have their next IUI appointment together and that they weren’t going to tell Lauren’s mother unless it led to a positive result.
Jason returned to the house after dropping off his mom and he told both Angelica and Sunhe that his mother found them both bossy. He also implied that he wasn’t sure about marrying Angelica. His exact words are that he’s willing to accommodate her by getting married and that’s not what Angelica wanted to hear. Angelica wanted to hear Jason loves her. That’s what she wasn’t getting from him and so they got into a fight as they were filming their confessionals and Jason stormed off leaving Sunhe to comfort Angelica.
