In tonight’s Station 19 episode, things have changed. The firefighters haven’t been the same since their brush with Seattle PD and Maya was going through an even more personal issue. Her girlfriend’s brother died. He died while taking down a sex trafficker and, given the choice again, he’d probably still make the same decision because DeLuca was a good person like that.

He wouldn’t trade his life if it meant a bad guy or woman in this case got away. He would always choose to do the right thing. DeLuca was also a doctor like his sister Carina and so helping came naturally to him, but now he’s dead and Carina was struggling with his death. Carina was very protective of her brother while he was alive. She was his big sister and she had been protecting him his whole life. And so her being unable to protect him from this was heartbreaking for her.

Carina took time off work. She stayed in the apartment she shares with her girlfriend and she worried Maya so much that Maya took bereavement to be with her. Maya left Andy in charge. Andy is her second-in-command and, what with there being a shortage of captains to go around, their bosses didn’t mind Maya’s decision. Andy was a lieutenant.

She was experienced. She was also the daughter of the infamous Pruitt Herrera and so Andy was given leave to run Station 19. She has the support of her captain. She also has the support of her husband. Sullivan had been demoted from Battalion Chief to grunt and it hadn’t been easy for him. He struggled with being demoted so far down the line.

Only Sullivan hadn’t wanted to ruin Andy’s moment in the sun. He acted happy for her and he told her she has his support though secretly it was hard for him to suddenly be taking orders from her and not Maya. Maya was off at home doing her best to calm down a panicking Carina. Andy was in charge in her absence and she was good at the job. She arranged for Ben to be put on desk duty.

She knew DeLuca was a friend of his and so she couldn’t put him in the field because he might make a mistake in his grief but he could be put on desk duty. Ben was just so happy he was allowed to work that he didn’t complain. Ben didn’t want to be home because his kids have recently lost their grandma and he didn’t want to weigh them down with his grief.

Then there was Montgomery. Montgomery’s dad came to visit him at the station and it turns out his father was trying to excuse away his behavior. Montgomery found a shirtless photo of his father on a gay dating site. His father happens to still be married to his mother and so the photo was a problem. Montgomery confronted his father. He wanted the older man to know that he knows and now his dad was coming up with excuses.

He didn’t want to admit he was gay. He instead tried to claim the photo was posted by accident and that he hadn’t meant anything by it and both of them knew it was a lie. Montgomery knew his father was gay. He didn’t want to tell his mother because he didn’t feel that was a place and so he would prefer it if his father chose to be honest for once.

Even Emmett Dixon knew his dad was gay. Montgomery has been in contact with his ex and he told Emmett everything. Emmett understood because he was once a closeted gay man himself. He was engaged to a woman and all the while he was sleeping with Montgomery. His ex-fiancé had even found a photo of another man’s genitals on his phone. Yet, he told her that it was a joke.

She was so relieved that it was a “joke” that she went back to thinking he was straight and didn’t know any differently until he came out to her. Emmett told Montgomery that sometimes someone can be closeted that the biggest lie is the one they tell themselves. He was speaking about himself when he said that and it still resonated with Montgomery because it reminded him of his father.

Montgomery was saved from having an awkward conversation with his dad when the house received a call. They were called to the scene of spontaneous dancing and it was a problem because it was a cult thing. Everyone that belonged to this cult was dancing because their supreme leader told them to dance away their pain. Their cult leader was also dancing. He was dancing on a rooftop near an edge and he apparently thought he wouldn’t be hurt if he fell.

He thought he would actually fly if he fell. So, Andy had to send someone up there to keep an eye on him. She sent Jack. Jack did his best to reason with a lunatic and all the while his team stayed on the ground to keep an eye on the man’s followers. One follower injured himself when he climbed up on a tree stump and fell.

Dean and Vic treated the guy. As they were doing so, another follower came up and licked Dean. Vic had to wipe away the DNA. It didn’t stop Dean from freaking out and his day got worse from there. Dean had heard back from the brass. They told him in a roundabout way that he wouldn’t be promoted if he went ahead with his lawsuit against the police department and so there was no point in him studying for his lieutenancy exam. Dean also ran into one of the officers that were there that day. He found out the police officer that was the problem has been suspended and that his own partner reported him. And while he should have been happy about the news, Dean was still angry because he couldn’t help remembering how two teenage girls almost died because one officer chose to be a racist and the other officers chose to side with him.

It didn’t matter what the man’s fellow officers did later on. At that moment, they chose to side with him, and that represented everything Dean has been taught to fear. Dean was still going ahead with his lawsuit because he wanted to change things more significantly. He and the other firefighters set up an inflatable bed in case Brother John fell and it turns out they didn’t have to worry about him falling.

He actually jumped. He thought he would be okay and it bolstered his delusions when he was. He fell on the inflatable bed. He was taken to the hospital for any injuries he might have sustained and Jack chose to ride in the ambulance with him. Jack and Brother John bonded. Brother John was still crazy but he sometimes said a few words of wisdom.

Brother John told Jack that fear couldn’t and shouldn’t hamper him. He took a leap and he turned out alright. He told Jack to try that some time. Jack even considered it because there was a woman he was interested in and he would like to know what it was like to be with her. Only he was afraid to take a leap. He lives with the woman he likes and it was platonic. They met because she was running from an ex.

They were also looking after a little kid together and so Jack didn’t want to ruin the atmosphere they have now by telling her about his feelings. He also didn’t want to stay friends. Jack is having a hard time deciding what to do in the situation and so advice from a cult leader was just what he needed. Jack took a leap. He kissed the woman he liked and she kissed him back.

Dean meanwhile spoke to Ben and Vic. He told them how he wanted to change the system and how he didn’t think he could do it from the inside because that’s what other black men thought and still nothing changed. Dean thinks he can change things with his lawsuit. He doesn’t want to fix his face or pretend to be fake with the police officers. He still doesn’t trust them, but he’s willing to work with them because he loves his job. He loves helping people.

Vic was inspired by Dean. She contacted a guy she liked and he was thinking the same as her because he later showed up at the station with flowers.

And Maya helped Carina scream out her frustrations.

THE END!
