In tonight’s Station 19 episode, Vic is in a new relationship. The firefighter met Theo Ruiz while out on her morning jog and they quickly bonded because as it turns out Theo was a firefighter too. He works at a different station. He also wasn’t in a position of power over Vic and so far this was turning out to be a healthy relationship.

They even went out on dates. The pandemic stopped Vic from her normal routine of jumping into bed with a guy and then falling into a relationship afterward. She now has to take her time. She went on her first date with Theo. It was her very first date and it went great. He cooked for her. They talked. They were also interrupted when Theo received a text from his captain that told him he was going to be filling in for someone at Station 19.

Maya was still on leave. Her girlfriend had just lost her brother and so Maya was taking time off to help arrange things. In her absence, Andy has stepped up as an acting captain. She was running things and she had needed an extra pair of hands. She sent out the word. The word came to Theo and so he started his first day at Station 19 the day after his date.

He and Vic had agreed to pretend they didn’t know each other. They didn’t want anyone finding out they were dating and so they acted like strangers. They even introduced themselves in full of everyone else. Vic and Theo were hiding their joy right up until Montgomery saw Theo. He saw Theo and he instantly remembered him. Montgomery later explained that Theo is the man that got his husband killed.

Montgomery was married to a firefighter. His husband worked with Theo and Theo was supposed to be watching Michael’s back as his captain. He sent Michael into a dangerous situation. Michael died and Theo was demoted to lieutenant. Montgomery thought it was the least that brass could do. He would have preferred if Theo was outright fired or was forced out of the fire department and so seeing Theo again had brought back horrible memories.

He didn’t want to be around Theo. He didn’t want to see Theo and that was a problem for Vic. Vic and Montgomery were tight. They were best friends and that meant Vic couldn’t see Theo anymore because that would be a betrayal of her friendship with Montgomery.

Montgomery hates Theo. He wasn’t going to change his mind about that anytime soon and so this could be the end of Vic and Theo’s relationship. They couldn’t go on with them both knowing about Montgomery. Vic was thinking over what she had to do when three guys came bursting into the fire station and one of them was sporting a head injury.

The guy with the head injury literally had an arrow through his skull. He and his friends were also drunk and lying about their injuries. They claimed they were playing touch football in the park when the arrow came out of nowhere. Vic was put in charge of dealing with the friends. She pushed them for the real story and they later told her that they came up with the bright idea of shooting at cans on their heads.

They were doing it with arrows. One of them missed and hit their friend and now he had to be rushed to the hospital for his head injury. Vic thought all three of the guys were dumb. She washed her hands of them and so they all went to the hospital together. No one called the cops. The firefighters said it wasn’t their place and they were still feeling raw after their last encounter with the police. The police had arrested two of them.

The two they arrested were black and they weren’t doing anything. Miller was one of the men arrested. He was told the man he had a problem with had been placed on suspension, but that wasn’t enough for Miller. He wants justice. He wants to change. Miller thought the best way to get that was to sue the police department.

Miller got a lawyer. The lawyer was recommended to him and it happens to be his ex-girlfriend. This made things awkward. Miller wasn’t sure how he should act around her and so she put him at ease. She didn’t care about rehashing the past. She just wanted to know what it is he wants from the lawsuit and it couldn’t be vague. Like justice or change. Miller talked about it with Sullivan and Ben. They too didn’t have a clear-cut answer of what it is they want.

Ben did mention that he would like to tell his sons that they could now drive with more than two black friends in the car and he thought it was sad that he had to tell children to change their behaviors while no one was telling the cops to do the same. Even the new guy thought this. Theo heard an emergency call come in and he took it because he thought cops would be at the scene. And he didn’t want Miller to have to deal with them.

Theo also went because Montgomery was the firefighter that called it in. Montgomery had noticed a car behind the ambulance and the car had a passed-out man in the driver’s seat. There was also drug paraphernalia around. It was clear the driver had gotten high at a red light and was overdosing. Montgomery was treating him. He called for backup and he came to resent that call when he saw it was Theo. Montgomery told him he didn’t want him.

He asked for someone else and Theo refused to leave. Then Montgomery revived the patient. It freaked out the driver that he ended up driving over Theo’s foot and Montgomery took pleasure in that. He hadn’t done it on purpose. He just didn’t mind it happened and he was calling it karma when Theo asked what happened.

Theo was trying to work on his relationship with Montgomery. Only it didn’t matter what he did, Montgomery was never going to forgive him and Vic didn’t even think she can discuss her brief thing with Theo with him. She talked to Miller because she needed to tell someone. She told him about the Montgomery and Theo situation.

She also told him how it was Montgomery that convinced her to go out with Theo in the first place. Montgomery hadn’t known she was talking about Theo because back then he thought it was simply another firefighter and so technically it’s Montgomery’s fault that Vic is in this situation. They also saw when Theo came back from the call limping. They asked him about it and they learned that Montgomery had left an injured firefighter out there to walk back to the station alone.

The least Montgomery could do was give Theo a ride back. It was an unspoken rule in the house to never leave an injured man behind and Montgomery broke that rule. Miller confronted him about it. He told Montgomery he was in the wrong and Montgomery explained that his whole life changed when his husband died.

He fell apart. It took him years to start healing again and he never returned to the man he used to be. He was fragments of who used to be. Montgomery is still in so much pain that he’s not ready to forgive and he couldn’t be forced into it either. He has to make the decision himself. Montgomery and Theo aside, Miller spoke to his lawyer. He told her that he wants what happened to him to never happen again and so she told him that was a great first step.

It was going to get harder from here. Miller has to prepare for it and he thinks he can do it because he has the backing of his station. Vic included. Vic later spoke to Theo about his foot and this time she asked him for his side of the story. So far, she’s only ever heard it from Montgomery’s point of view. Vic was kissing Theo when later Montgomery walked in on them and he found out the two were together.

All-day, Andy being in charge turned out to be an issue with Sullivan but he talked to Ben about it and he realizes that he has to make peace with it because Andy was always going to be in charge of him now.

Jack took the day off to go see his old friend Marsha in the hospital and he took Marcus with him.

THE END!
