In tonight’s Station 19 episode, Travis Montgomery is still grieving the loss of his late husband Michael. Michael was the love of his life and it hurts to remember him. Montgomery and Michael met at the Academy. They were both training to be firefighters with their friend Theo. The three of them knew took an instant liking to each other and were so close that it caused irreversible damage when Michael died on Theo’s watch.

Montgomery blamed Theo for his husband’s death. It ended their friendship and it could potentially end Montgomery’s friendship with Vic as well. Vic and Montgomery were best friends. They understood each other like no one else and so it had hurt to see Vic kissing the man he blames for his husband’s death.

Montgomery had known that Vic was interested in another. He just didn’t know this other firefighter was Theo until he saw them kissing and he thought he had been betrayed. Montgomery ran out of there. Vic followed him. Montgomery asked if Theo was the guy she had been talking about for the last couple of weeks and she confirmed that he was, but she also said their relationship never got off the ground long enough to end things and Vic was ending it. She wasn’t going to see Theo anymore. She knew what it would do to her best friend and so she chose her best friend. She chose Montgomery. She also tried to talk to Montgomery about what he was feeling and he wasn’t ready for that.

Montgomery didn’t want to discuss Theo or Michael. He wanted to give himself time to heal and he told Vic that by using a metaphor about picking at scabs. Only the two were paired together. They ran the ambulance and they later responded to an OD. It turns out the man they were treating was the same guy that overdosed literally a day ago.

His name was Charlie and this was his third OD in the past month. The hospital staff recognized him when he was dropped off by Montgomery and Vic. The two also had to respond to a call from the same address the next minute because Charlie’s friend Libby had overdosed this time. Libby and Charlie were best friends. They both claim that Charlie was trying to get clean and that she got him drugs as his last hurrah.

Montgomery thought that was stupid. He told Libby it had been stupid and he let his feelings from earlier cloud his judgment because he also told Libby she might have just killed her best friend. Montgomery would never have said that if he had been in the right frame of mind. He has more tact than that.

It was also just cruel and that wasn’t him. Libby felt guilty enough and she had called for help for Charlie. A bystander was the one to call for help with Libby. She came out of the apartment and she passed out on the street. She too had overdosed. Vic and Montgomery ended up having to save her life. They did so and they brought her to the hospital where she could be with her friend. The firefighters even ran into Emmett.

He was volunteering at the hospital to do all that he can. He’s also aware of the ongoing fight between Vic and Montgomery and he asked Montgomery what the big deal was. Vic dumped Theo. Theo was only going to be at their firehouse for a short time and so Montgomery won’t have to deal with him ever again after the next few days. Only that wasn’t why Montgomery was upset. He was upset with Vic because she had heard out Theo’s side.

She kissed him and she was comforting him because Theo had told her what it was like for him to lose Michael. Michael was his best friend. His roommate. He was also the guy he would have called for help with Montgomery and so Theo lost two people. Not just one.

Theo lost both Michael and Montgomery. Vic had sympathized with him and that’s what Montgomery walked in on. Emmett understands that Vic never betrayed Montgomery, but Montgomery thought Emmett was taking sides and he hadn’t wanted the other man said. Montgomery and Vic got back into the ambulance and they were heading back to the station when Vic pulled over. She did it because she wanted them to hash things out.

Vic told Montgomery that he still hasn’t moved on in the four years that Michael died and that he was stuck in the past. Vic also mentioned how she considered his feelings from the very start and he hasn’t once considered hers. The two would have said more except they were called to another overdose.

Libby somehow managed to sneak away from the hospital where she got her hands on more drugs. She overdosed and died in the park. Both Montgomery and Vic had thought that was sad. Here, they were arguing over a man when there’s an opioid crisis. The worst part about Libby dying is that she truly didn’t believe she had a problem.

She thought it was Charlie who couldn’t quit and that she was perfectly fine and now she’s dead. Libby was an addict and she died before she could realize it. Vic thought that was sad. She and Montgomery started to talk to each other normally again and Montgomery even apologized for throwing Ripley’s death in her face. He said he shouldn’t have accused Vic of not feeling for her fiancé.

They both dealt with the grief over loved ones very differently. Vic chose to not lose hope and Montgomery held onto the anger. He was angry because he told Michael all those years ago that he didn’t like how quickly Theo was promoted. He was a lieutenant for less than six months when he got promoted to captain and it was Michael who told Montgomery not to worry about it. He said that Theo was going to be a great fit for the job.

Then Theo later made a mistake he couldn’t take back. He thought the wind was shifting in a new direction and he told Michael to shelter in place. If he hadn’t had done that, Michael will still be alive and all three would still be friends. Montgomery and Theo could have kept their friendship if Montgomery had simply forgiven Theo but, like Montgomery said, he was addicted to being furious.

Montgomery didn’t even know the full story. Theo asked for a demotion after Michael died because he hadn’t felt he was ready to be captain and Fire Chief Ripley had tried to fight him on it. But Theo was too afraid of making another life-altering mistake. Ripley allowed for him to be demoted and the two developed a friendship. It, therefore, hurt when Ripley died. Theo ended up losing another friend and he closed himself off after that. And Montgomery never knew.

Montgomery was only now considering how losing Michael may have impacted Theo as well.

THE END!
