In tonight’s episode of Station 19, Dean’s relationship with his parents has greatly improved. He even lets them watch his baby daughter for him now while he’s at work and so he’s learning to trust them again. Dean is at that stage where’s antsy about leaving his daughter Pruitt or Pru as he likes to call her. He doesn’t just leave her with anyone and so entrusting his daughter to them is a sign he’s forgiven them. He’s forgiving them for cutting him off.

His parents have always hated the fact he gave up his high-powered job to become a firefighter and they only stopped nagging him when he committed the greatest faux pas. He gave became a single father. He had a child out of wedlock and that went against his parents’ morals. They cut him off and they only reached out to him once they realized both him and their granddaughter.

Dean ended up forgiving them for that because he had needed their help. He was suing the Seattle Police Department and he needed his parents’ many resources to be at his back when he did so. The SPD is already retaliating. They ticketed the station’s fire truck. They’ve also refused to show up at a scene that required both the Fire Department and the Police Department. Nowadays, they’re sending former Fire Chief Dixon to have a talk with Dean’s captain.

Dixon lost his job after the Sullivan Scandal and men like him, unfortunately, fail upwards. He got a job with SPD. He came by to lean on Maya in the hope she would get Dean to dismiss the lawsuit and, while he was there, he was a jerk to everyone. He especially went out of his way to be horrible to Sullivan.

Sullivan was demoted back to probie after the scandal. He resents his new position and secretly his wife feels the same way, but Dixon revealed in Sullivan’s demotion because Sullivan was the reason he was fired from SFD and so Dixon told Sullivan he’s heard about him trying to make a comeback. Dixon took it upon himself to inform Sullivan that no matter what he does he’ll never be promoted again and then he left after he dropped that truth bomb.

Everyone at the station hated Dixon. He somehow managed to mock Maya for crying that her former captain died and he tried to claim she was too emotional to handle the position. So, Maya was glad to see the back of him. Maya ignored everything he tried to teach her and she was a good captain.

Only she might not be captain for long. Maya hasn’t told her team yet but she’s thinking of going to Italy with her girlfriend and there’s no telling when the two will be back and so she might lose rank. Maya and the A team were later called out to a fire at an ice rink. The ice resurfacer machine had caught fire and the man who was operating it had fallen off. He was lying on the ice. He was too injured to move himself and the machine was still going. It was on fire.

It was speeding all over the ice and it was bound to crush the driver. Poor Lloyd was frightened. His wife was the one to call it in and she just wanted her husband to be rescued. The team had to slowly move over the ice to get to Lloyd. They put him on the stretcher and they got him back to land without injury.

There was just one problem, though. The machine was still going and so the team had to figure out a way to get to the machine to douse it. They collected ladders. They used the ladders to get high enough to spray the machine with the fire extinguisher every time it came around. It wasn’t much. The machine was still blazing on fire and Sullivan was doing his best to tell Maya he was being supportive albeit without showing it.

Like he was just saying it to curry favor. Sullivan was told Maya was going to Italy and he wanted to know who was taking over. This was the same Sullivan that wants to go after his lieutenant’s exam and so there’s a part of him that thinks he can use Maya’s absence to climb the promotional ladder. And that’s not what’s going to happen.

Sullivan is a probie. He was demoted after stealing drugs from a fire department regulated program and so there’s no way in hell he’ll get to be captain again. It was just Sullivan who didn’t realize this. He complained about being a probie and he seems more resentful of the position since he spoke to the new Battalion Chief.

The Battalion Chief had implied he could be promoted again if he got Dean to drop his lawsuit. Sullivan wasn’t really given the assurances that this would happen, but it’s what he believes now and that’s why he’s so dissatisfied. Sullivan later came up with a plan to handle the machine fire. He suggested they got out on the ice on skates and Maya took him up on that offer. She ordered everyone who could skate to go out on the ice to put out the fire. And it worked too.

The firefighters put out what they thought was an impossible fire. The couple who owned the ice rink had thanked them and, back at the station, Ben who had been left behind was dealing with a different crisis. An expectant couple came in. The wife was in labor and thankfully Ben had help from Carina. Carina is an OBYGN. She quickly determined that the baby was breached and so they called for one of their ambulances to come back. Dean and Andy were in the ambulance.

They got to talking while they were driving and Dean reveals why he was so scared about leaving Pru. He said he has to get parenting rights because Pru was already abandoned by her mother. Dean didn’t want her to believe he was abandoning her too and so Andy told him not to worry.

Andy told Dean that she was once Pru. She had no mother and a father who was a firefighter. She turned out okay because she had a father who loved her. Andy thinks Pru will also be okay for that same reason and so she wasn’t worried about the baby. The two of them showed up at the station and they met the pregnant Nancy. Only Nancy’s husband Wayne had passed out. Wayne has a family history of heart attacks and he appears he had one as his first child was being born.

It was Wayne that was rushed to the hospital while Carina delivered Nancy’s baby. The baby came out okay. It was great news for Nancy but her husband was rushed to a hospital where they didn’t have an available bed and so Dean had to order the doctors to find a bed.

Wayne almost died in the ambulance. It was Andy and Dean who kept him alive and a good thing too because he just became a new father to a baby girl. The other firefighters came in as Nancy was pushing and so Carina told them to get lost. Maya stayed to help. Maya fell in love with Carina again as she watched her work and she also had a moment of clarity. Maya realized she couldn’t go to Italy with Carina. Which was fine. Carina and Maya both decided to try long-distance and Carina promised to be back before Maya knew it. And just as everyone else was calming down after a long day, that’s when footage of George Floyd’s murder began to spread.

THE END!
