In tonight’s FBI Most Wanted episode, LaCroix and his team were brought in to tracking down escaped convict Estevan Maldonado. His escape from a supermax prison was well-planned and well-executed. It also wasn’t his first escape. Maldonado has escaped twice before. He always goes to his stronghold. Once there, he’s untouchable. Maldonado is traveling with one of his guards. The guard also killed his wife before running off with Maldonado and there’s no hope he’ll turn on Maldonado. Maldonado is wealthy. He’s a drug kingpin. He also values loyalty. He doesn’t have much family because his mother abandoned him at age seven and he bounced from orphanage to orphanage until the cartel took him in. And so loyalty is big to him.

Maldonado keeps everyone paid so that they stay loyal. Even the pet cheetah. But Maldonado went against the grain or in his case what he normally does to act out. He killed the priest that helped him in prison. The priest was basically passing on messages for him while he was behind bars and LaCroix’s team later found him dead. Which again doesn’t sound like Maldonado. Everyone assumed it had to be the guard he was with. Simich! Deputy Simich even brought him to a house owned by a friend and the friend’s wife and daughter were found inside. The two took the poor frightened women hostage.

Simich wanted to take the woman’s car. He wanted to flee without hurting anyone else and Maldonado shot him. He shot him because he couldn’t afford for anyone to know they had a homosexual relationship. Maldonado apparently cared about his image than he did about loyalty. The team didn’t know this and so they pursued the people they thought were still important to him. They found the airplane he would have used to escape. They confiscated. They also detained Maldonado’s girlfriend. His girlfriend had recently had a baby while he was in prison and yet she was willing to abandoned that baby to go with Maldonado at the drop of a hat.

She was that terrified of him. Barnes could see it in other woman’s face and there was nothing she could do about it because she can’t help someone who doesn’t want to get help. Maldonado was terrifying. The man made sure to rape a woman while before changing out cars. He was that insecure about his sexuality and not even the fact he has both a wife and a mistress made him feel secure as a man. But again the team didn’t know this as they were looking for him. They were one step behind Maldonado. They were one step behind because they were traitor in their ranks and they didn’t realize it until the same traitor sent them on a false lead.

It was a DEA Agent who was the traitor. He was also the father of Emiliana’s baby. He said he couldn’t help falling in love but he sent his son away to be safe and he couldn’t risk killing Maldonado because it would have the entire cartel after him. LaCroix knew this man was at risk of dying in prison if it came out he slept with the boss’s mistress, but they couldn’t convince him to talk and so they had to throw him in prison. Odds are he’ll die before long. But the team realized where Maldonado was going now that all other avenues were closed to him. He was going to head to the tunnels.

The same tunnels that are used to bring drugs into the United States. The team went looking for an opening to these tunnels now that no longer had the rouge DEA Agent impeding them and they found one beneath a nunnery. The team went there. They found Maldonado, but he took a nun hostage and so they were talking him down when a member of his organization came up behind him. Luis got Maldonado to the tunnels. Maldonado made sure to grab Gaines. He had a gun trained her at all times and he could have killed her. She even told him to kill her because she refused to help him.

Gaines had been taken hostage once before. She was undercover when her cover was blown and she was drugged and raped and tortured. So, she knew that nothing Maldonado could do would break her. She’s already survived it. Gaines went for a knife and she overcame Maldonado. She could have killed him, but she didn’t. She arrested him instead. Gaines had never talked about being taken prisoner before and so she later discussed it with her ex-husband. She told him he didn’t have to feel embarrassed that he moved on. She wasn’t in love with him anymore. She just doesn’t want him keeping secrets or telling the kids to keep secrets. And that’s why she finally told him her biggest secret.

Gaines felt free after she finally said what happened out loud.

THE END!
