In tonight’s NCIS Hawai’i episode, a system check at a military controlled dam went awry after the damn came on unexpectedly. It trapped Petty Officer Second Class Thomas Pressley inside and the poor man died before his partner could do anything to stop it. Tennant and her team were brought in. They noticed the extra attention by law enforcement.

Tennant suspected that the dam malfunctioning could either be a sabotage or worse it could be a terrorist attack. The team were going to investigate both options. They looked into the dam schedule. Pressley and his partner had followed protocol. They did everything right. It shouldn’t have resulted in the death of one of them. The dam was rebooted while it was being worked on and so now the question is who rebooted it?

Tennant and her team were looking into it. There was also several other federal agencies looking into it and whichever one that lacks manners is the one that grabbed up Ernie as he was enjoying coffee with Lucy. Lucy tried to pursue the car.

She didn’t get any information. Nor did she see who took him because they weren’t wearing jackets with identifiers on them. But they all suspected FBI. FBI were the only ones who would pull such a jerk move and leave no explanation. Tennant and her team didn’t even know where to start looking for Ernie because Ernie was the guy they turned to help them in this situation.

The team instead relied on Whistler. Whistler transferred over to the FBI and she knew where they were located on the island. She gave Tennant the information. Tennant and her team showed up there and the FBI tried to stop them, but Tennant said that she goes where Ernie goes and so she pushed her way into the makeshift headquarters. She found Ernie.

He was fine and he filled them in what’s been happening. Someone hacked the dam. They technically hacked the whole water and power grid and they were threatening to kill more people if they didn’t get the ransom money. And they’ve already killed one person as proof of concept.

If they could do that, they could take down the dam. They could stop power to the island. They could literally leave everyone in the dark. But Ernie along with other techies have determined that the ransomware was installed at the company’s power grid by someone carrying in a mechanism called a pineapple. It was malware that needed to be transferred off of a flash drive.

Tennant and her team quickly found who infected the system with malware. It was some junkie. He got paid a couple of thousand dollars to drop it off and he never took names. He couldn’t even describe the person who gave him the pineapple because they never met in person.

The guy was also paid in cryptocurrency which is basically untraceable. The team checked the advertisement that he replied to and Ernie kept looking into the hack. With barely twenty minutes left on the clock, the company decided to pay the ransom. They didn’t want to risk losing power. They paid the ransom and the terrorists still went through with their threats. Power and water were shut off. It didn’t make sense. The terrorists got what they wanted. Why did they continue to persist? The team kept looking into the hack and Ernie was able to determine that someone was using the source code created by Kevin Rooker also known as “the rook”.

The guy was a recluse. He used to work for the NSA and then he disagreed with his code being used to spy on everyday Americans. He stepped away, but they kept track of his movements in the years afterwards and so they knew he was on the island. Rooker was now in a band. He makes and rehabs old guitars. Rooker didn’t want to get involved in this but he agreed to do it to help people in need and so while he was assisting the federal agents is when one of them chose to kidnap him. It turns out that the ransomware was a ruse. It was a plot to lure Rooker out of hiding. Rooker has created programs for prominent institutions all over the world. And someone wanted to use Rooker into hacking into a national bank.

Rooker sent out a distress signal after he had been kidnapped. He sent it to Ernie and Ernie used it to find his location. The team later arrived at the kidnapper’s door with guns. They got to Rooker. They saved him. They also saved Raddick also known as the kidnapper. Raddick worked on the cyber task force. He hated watching criminals get away with millions. He therefore strived to steal money and it had to be as much as he could possibly get. But Raddick was captured. He will spend the rest of his life behind bars for the murder he committed and Rooker got to return to his old life.

And after everything, Whistler finally apologized to Lucy about not telling her about her girlfriend on the mainland.

THE END!
