In tonight’s NCIS: Los Angeles episode, Callen was still pursuing his past. He found out he was a part of a secret program that used children in the foster care system and tested them for the potential for spy work. Callen hadn’t realized it at the time. He hadn’t even figured out years later, but he knows now that he was a part of this program and he wants answers.
Hetty was one of the few people that could give him answers. She ran the program. She knows what kind of tests were done on the kids involved. Hetty could explain why Callen was taken from one of the best foster moms he could have wished for and so Callen has to know her reasoning. He has to know why his life was the way it is.
Callen was so obsessed with knowing that truth that he pushed away Anna. Anna told him she needed a break from him and that she didn’t want to move to the new apartment with him. She was going to stay with her father. Callen also was having trouble at work.
Katya, using those deep fakes of Callen’s face and voice, had sent out hundreds of inappropriate as well as outright sexual harassment messages to every federal law official in the United States. It got so bad that Admiral Kilbride was ordered to remove Callen from the field. They wanted Callen to take time off. It was one thing when Katya was working alone and now that she was deploying bots it had gotten out of hand.
This wasn’t Callen’s fault. But he was surely being punished as if it was. Callen had needed the time off anyway because he was still looking into the program and he was even following one of the kids that had also been in it. He wasn’t just following her, either. He had even approached this woman.
He pretended to bump into her. He then flirted with her. He was doing everything possible to get close to her and so maybe it’s a good thing that Anna needs a break. She thought Callen became obsessed with Katya. He was constantly watching old footage of Katya being tortured when she was being trained as a spy during Russia’s very own program for vulnerable kids.
Callen was spinning out. The Admiral knew that and that’s why he had the resident therapist come in to check on Callen. Callen didn’t feel like talking. Not at first. Nathan had thankfully been very patient and he was soon able to get Callen talking.
Callen believes that the same agent that tortured Katya in the video was the man who also taught him while he was going through the program. He wanted to find the guy. He wanted answers about the program. About Katya. Nathan accidentally revealed that the Admiral knew more about the matter than he was saying and that the Drona Program was based on a Russian program.
But while Callen was confronting the Admiral, the rest of the team was tracking down a missing professor that had been helping the Department of Naval Intelligence. The professor’s name was Maria Varza. She worked with some of the best universities that the country has to offer. She was good at her job and her job was working them unravel a mystery. She was looking into a genetic weapon that the Iranians were building. She was friends with an Irani scientist. She actually went out to eat with this friend the night she disappeared. And while Varza was eating, someone accessed her car.
The team looked into it. They found out that two men were following Varza and her friend. Also, one of the men had left surveilling them around the same time the car was accessed. The team came to suspect the friend. They started following her and Fatima even approached by pretending to be interested in her work as a scientist. Fatima, unfortunately, lost Jaharri’s trust by pushing too hard. The scientist left and that’s when Fatima noticed the two men following her. It was the same two men that were following Varza. They followed Fatima and she got the better of them with Sam’s help.
They also detained the scientist’s friend. Jaharri admitted that Varza approached her by offering her a job with Naval Intelligence and that she turned it down. She hadn’t even believed Varza when she made the offer. She thought she was making it up. She only knows now that the woman was telling the truth. But Jaharri was questioned about her connection to Iran as well as about Iran’s genetic weapon.
She had no clue what they were talking about. She didn’t even know the two men that were following her and their involvement in Varza’s disappearance. Those men were trained agents. They wouldn’t be broken. And Jaharri wasn’t much help because she completely denied working with the Iranians or knowing their plans.
Only Varza was later found. She was in the hospital being treated for her wounds. Varza had no memory of the time since she was taken and when she was found. She couldn’t be of any help to the investigation. And the investigation was officially over now that the professor had been found.
Everyone just believes she was taken and interrogated over what she knew. There’s no telling if she broke. Callen meanwhile found the man that tested him while he was in the program. He even got this man’s name and what he looks like now. He also believes this man was the same man that tortured Katya during her own program. And so he tried to convince Nate of it, but Nate said he would need more evidence and so Callen tried to get evidence on his own.
Callen broke into the man’s place of business looking for evidence, but he was caught by a surveillance camera and now the man knows Callen is after him.
