In tonight’s The Resident episode, Kincaid visited her father at rehab. Dr. Ian Sullivan has been struggling with addiction. He finally agreed to go to rehab after his daughter threatened to out him as an addict and ruin his career. Therefore, the least Kincaid could do was visit him on Family Day. She made excuses with everyone about why she would be away and she didn’t even tell Conrad where her father was. Kincaid wanted to keep her father’s addiction to herself. Nic tried to do the same thing with her own family. Remember her. Nic’s father was always out of the picture for one reason or another. He left Nic to raise her younger sister and the sister also had problems. And so Nic never had it easy.

It was Conrad who offered to help her with everything. They started off as friends and became something more to each other. Nic gave Conrad a beautiful daughter. She later died and everyone was affected. She was universally loved. Her father took her death the worst. He blamed Conrad for not saving Nic. He hated Conrad so much that he cut off contact with Conrad. He didn’t even visit his granddaughter. It wasn’t until he came back to Georgia to pick up something from storage and he suffered an event while there that he ran into Conrad again. Kyle had to be taken to the hospital. He got sent to Chastain and that’s how he ran into Conrad after five years of no contact.

Kyle didn’t want to accept help at first. He tried to get them to sign him out. It wasn’t until he was told that GG was in the building that he remembered his granddaughter and he agreed to accept medical treatment in return for seeing her. Now, GG wasn’t scared when she later met Grandpa Kyle. She’s seen pictures of him growing up. Her father prepared her for Kyle one day becoming a part of her life and so GG wasn’t scared of Kyle when they met. She happily walked right up to him and began talking. She put Kyle at ease as he was undergoing tests. He was suffering from a heart arrhythmia. And the doctors, including Conrad, tried to figure out why.

They were doing so when Billie decided to commit to a risky surgery. Billie had a patient who had a brain tumor. This wasn’t the patient’s first tumor. She had one years ago and it was successfully removed. But the tumor came back. It was now in a difficult location within the brain. The patient was also older and at more risk of bleeding out. Billie at first didn’t want to do this surgery. She only agreed to it when the patients’ sons said they would find another doctor who would say yes to the surgery. Billie hadn’t wanted that to happen because she knew if anyone else tried it that it would most likely be in the poor woman’s death. So, she agreed to do it.

They later weren’t in surgery all that long when the woman began to bleed out. Billie tried to save her patient. She truly gave it her best shot and it was like she tried to tell the woman’s sons. The surgery was too risky. There was some bleeding. Billie handled it and her patient survived the surgery. She just didn’t survive the recovery. The patient later died and the sons had no one to blame but themselves. They didn’t want to hear that the surgery was going to be difficult or that their mother might not survive it. They said their mother would beat the odds. When she didn’t, the sons snapped. They blamed the hospital for their mother’s death.

They blamed Billie in particular. It didn’t matter that she tried to talk them out of the surgery or that they threatened to go to someone who would say yes as long as the surgery was done. They didn’t want their mother to die and they couldn’t handle it when she did. The sons were especially angry that Billie didn’t tell them their mother died herself. It was Leela who told them. Their mother died when they went to the cafeteria, and they returned to find out their mother was no longer in her room. They asked where she was. Leela ended up feeling bad for them. She broke the news as gently as she could. She even offered to get the grief counselors when she saw that they were struggling.

Not that the sons wanted to hear it. They found out that Billie was in emergency surgery with someone else and so they crashed the surgery. They went right into the OR. They yelled at Billie. They trashed the OR. Security had to be called and the sons disappeared when security arrived. Everyone assumed they left the hospital. They went about their usual schedules. Billie finished her surgery. She calmed down Leela by telling her this wasn’t her fault and elsewhere Conrad figured out what was wrong with Kyle. Kyle suffered from a condition that was easily treatable. Which is a good thing now because he finally has a relationship with his granddaughter.

Kyle also finally got told off for blaming Conrad for Nic’s death. He tried to whine to his granddaughter and she shut that down. GG was like a miniature Nic. She looked like her mother. She talked like her mother. She checked people with a reality dose like her mother. But the hospital went into lockdown mode when they realized those crazy brothers never left. They just hid long enough to spot Billie going into the stairwell. They followed her. They tried to kill her and Conrad stepped in. Conrad saved Billie’s life. He fought off the brothers until security arrived. And Conrad was a hero.

Something his daughter knew. Something she tried to convince Kyle off. So, Kyle later came to accept the truth. He realized that Conrad wasn’t to blame for Nic’s death and that he wasn’t alone. He has GG. He has Conrad. But not all relationships can be saved. Cade finally had enough of her father in a group therapy meeting. She had to listen to other children of addicts. It made her realize just how much she’s had to put up with and so she finally had enough. She told off her father when it was their turn. She told him that she was no longer going to lie to him. And she left him at rehab.

And Padma. Padma disappeared without telling anyone where she was going. She got in touch a few hours into that disappearance. She told AJ that she would be back by nightfall and so he found childcare for their twins. He made excuses for her with her sister. He went to work and performed life-saving surgery on Kyle with the new doctor’s help. He even warned the new doctor that Billie and Conrad love each other and there wasn’t anything he or even Cade could do to put an end to it.

But what they didn’t know was that after Conrad drove Billie home that night – they kissed.

THE END!
