In tonight’s The Resident episode, Leela is giving her twin sister some of her eggs so that her sister can have a baby. Both sisters were happy about welcoming a child and Leela also wanted the opportunity to freeze some of her eggs. She wasn’t ready to become a mother herself. But she wanted to leave the door open in the future. She also wanted to help Padma in selecting a sperm donor.
She wanted only the best for her sister and that often translates into her being very picky. She wanted to know everything about the potential sperm donors. She even wanted to know what they looked like as adults because the website her sister was using had only used baby photos of potential sperm donors. And so the sister was fine with what she was given.
Leela on the other hand was not. She had misgivings about choosing perfect strangers to father her niece or nephew. But while Leela was looking at photos with her sister, Devon was taking his interns out on a field trip. He wanted them to get firsthand experience with some of the toughest patients there is and so he brought them to a retirement home. They got to meet people there. They even spoke with the legendary doctor Dr. Arthur Kravitz. Kravitz lives at the home. He has problem with short-term memory. He remembers the past just fine and indeed he had no problem with recognizing Vos. He just couldn’t remember Bell’s name.
Kravitz’s girlfriend Gloria helps him out. She remembers for him and she helps him. Kravitz still had enough presence to give the interns information on treating the elderly and the lecture was going well until Gloria passed out in front of them. Gloria was rushed to the hospital Kravitz went with her. He told them that Gloria wasn’t on medications. Gloria ended up telling them that she was on several of them. Gloria was on so much prescriptions that Devon didn’t know what caused what anymore. He wanted to take Gloria off the medications one by one to see what was causing the side-effects. His intern thought it was a lost cause.
The intern wanted to go watch a surgery because he thought surgeons at least solve problems. He said as much to Devon and so Devon had to tell him that patients die in the OR all the time. What matters or to better put it what makes a difference in whether a patient lives or dies is the doctor. Devon was doing his best to teach his interns to be great doctors. Not just good ones. Devon and Zach stayed on Gloria’s case. They informed her about their game plan and she ultimately agreed to it because Kravitz convinced her. Kravitz convinced her to trust the doctor. Devon started taking Gloria off the medication and while he waited for results he caught up with Leela.
Leela’s sister had chosen a donor. They were going ahead with steps to get the eggs ready and so Leela was on hormones. The hormones could explain why she went down a rabbit hole. Leela started digging into the sperm bank that her sister chose and she found three lawsuits against the place. Apparently, in one case the donor had forgotten to admit he was a carrier for schizophrenia. Another failed to disclose his criminal record. The third claimed to have graduated from college and was in fact a dropout. Leela didn’t like what she saw once she went down the rabbit hole. She thought her sister was making a big mistake by choosing that particular sperm bank.
She wanted to stop her sister from using that place. So, she came up with alternative. She didn’t want her sister to pick a random guy. She wanted her sister to potentially use the sperm of someone she works with. Leela got the idea from Devon, actually. She found out a lot of male doctors donate to get some fast cash in college and so she found one that worked at the hospital. She then told her sister about it. She wanted her sister to choose this guy even though he lied about knowing French. He put on his application that he was 6’5. Which was something that Padma doubts. Padma also didn’t care that he was a trombone prodigy.
Padma just wants the choice to be hers. Not her sister’s. Devon wasn’t around for that argument because Gloria had taken a turn for the worst and so they had to rush her into the hospital. It turns out all of her medications were hiding a very dangerous problem. Taking her off of them had been the best thing. It showed that the doctors that something else was wrong and they rushed her into the OR. Gloria was at risk because the surgery was dangerous and she was almost eighty, but Bell has done this surgery before and he felt confident he could do it again. Gloria was rushed into the OR. They performed surgery on her. Bell was still working on her when Gloria took a turn for the worst.
AJ got called in. He tried to help Bell in repairing the damage and it was too late. Gloria passed away on the table. Voss got called in to break the news to Kravitz, but the new intern Zach realized that they could have saved Gloria if she had just seen a doctor that tried to get to the bottom of her systems in stead of just treating them. And so he might reconsider going into the Surgery field.
Conrad meanwhile had an important task. He was given the opportunity to diagnose his daughter’s friend Peter and he got to the diagnosis in time to prevent little Peter from developing brain damage.
And Padma asked AJ to be her sperm donor rather than the guy her sister chose.
