Of course, social media was definitely buzzing when Robert Newman was announced as the new Ashland Locke. It created plenty of speculation about what led to Richard Burgi being replaced, especially since Burgi’s wife confirmed in an Instagram comment that it wasn’t his choice to leave.
Burgi eventually realized he needed to set the record straight himself, so that’s exactly what he did through an Instagram story. He admitted that Y&R indeed let him go, but this decision had nothing to do with his performance or the story he was given. Instead, it was due to a pandemic-related blunder.
“But the reality is that I naively and inadvertently violated the show’s COVID policy,” Burgi admitted. After testing positive over the Christmas break, Burgi took the necessary five days the CDC recommends to isolate.
Burgi then tested negative twice in the studio and showed up to work, but it wasn’t within the show’s guidelines since they still have a 10-day protocol. “And I felt terrible about it; and I still do. It bothers me mightily, but it is what it is. I respect whatever the show’s decision is,” Burgi said.
Burgi went on to send some positive vibes Robert Newman’s way as he tackles the role of Ashland Locke next. “I truly wish the gentleman who’s coming in to play Ashland a wonderful time,” Burgi insisted. “He’s going to be working with the most incredible actress and a great, great cast.”
Burgi also sent out some love for the CBS soap as a whole and called it an “amazing show.” He assured fans that he has “nothing but good memories and good wishes for it,” so he’s apparently not holding a grudge and has accepted this disappointing turn of events.
