Tonights This Is Us episode begins with the future and we see little Jack making a BBQ and with what seems like his wife. Back in the past, Jack comes home and asks Rebecca how he became that dad that leaves before breakfast and comes home after dinner. She assures him that her dad worked a lot and she loved him.

Toby is leaving for business, he kisses the kids and Kate, then leaves. They try later to do Facetime but the kids are acting out. Over and over again, business trips and video calls to the kids and Kate. Toby says a dad’s work is never done.

We then get a glimpse into Kevin’s life, daily waking up and going over to Madison’s house to help and see the twins.

At Randall’s house, he is getting ready to get on the road with Deja to teach her how to drive and he is looking forward to having that quality time with her. In the car, Deja puts some music on low and they go. Deja talks about school and all of a sudden her phone starts doing text to voice and it’s Malik. While Randall is listening to the whole thing, Malik says he can’t stop thinking about last weekend and the bed feels too big without her. Awkward!

Toby is home, he is so happy that he is home with the family for 36 hours. Kevin is there watching the family at the breakfast table and he looks envious. Later, Toby brings some gifts for the kids, Jack got a football and he bought Kate a purse with a gift card inside to get her hair done before they go out that evening.

Back in the past, Jack takes Kate, Kevin and Randall on a movie adventure.

Kevin heads to the set to work, and while reading his lines he kind of loses his lines a bit when he thinks about his twins – he didn’t get to spend any time with the kids today.

Back at home, Randall tells Beth what happened and he is freaking out, he says Deja is grounded forever and forbidden to see Maik. Randall is so hot that he goes for a run and Beth says she will talk to Deja.

Back to the movie adventure, Jack falls asleep, Kevin looks over, gets up and leaves.

Kevin is out for drinks with his co-workers, Kevin gets a video from Madison where his daughter takes her first steps. He says his goodbyes and leaves. It doesn’t take long for Kevin to arrive at Madison’s house and he is annoyed that his daughter is sleeping. Madison tells him that she can’t keep the kids up for every milestone. She trivializes it and he gets upset and says by video he doesn’t feel connected to their children. She says she knows how badly he wants to be in their lives, but they are not together and that means that sometimes, one of them are going to feel left out. He says he is sorry and that she is right.

Jack wakes up and asks Randall where he is, he says he left. Jack tells the kids to grab their things, they run out to look for Kevin. It turns out, that Kevin went to the food court at the mall to look for free samples, Kate wrote their phone number in his shoe and that is how he got reunited with the family. At home, Rebecca tells Jack that Kevin is playing with his Lego and all is well. Jack says he just wanted them to have a good day and now every time Kevin thinks about that first movie he saw he is going to think about how traumitized he was.

Toby and Kate are trying to leave to go to a recital and Jack is awake, he is off his schedule because of Jack and tells Kate he will stay behind, she should go alone. The recital is a success, Kate feels guilty though about what happened with Toby.

Randall is back from his run Beth tells him that they can’t ground this one out of Deja, she is completely in love. Beth says that while they thought Deja was out playing Candyland, she was out playing the game of life. Then she tells Randall to take a big drink of her wine, and while he is drinking, she says she is taking Deja’s to get birth control.

Kevin arrives back at Tony and Kate’s house, he tells him that grown up time didn’t happen. Kevin starts talking about being dad, he thought it would be family dinners at the dinner table, a solid unit. Toby says the dinner table is not what it is cracked up to be, his parents hated each other and pretended all the time. Kevin says that he is not happy. Toby tries to give him an analogy of a square and a circle and how the triangle is stronger, then they both burst out laughing.

Randall goes in to see Deja, he tells her that when he saw her behind the wheel of the car he thought she was way too young to be driving, because she still looks like his little girl that arrived on his doorstep with everything she owned in one bag. He says he is having a hard time with this because he missed the first twelve years of her life. He asks her to be patient with him, while he gets used to the new beautiful grownup her. Then he tells her that she is still a junior in high school and will not be visiting her boyfriend anytime soon in Boston. Deja says that is going to be a problem.

Kate is home from the recital, Toby tells her that she knows the kids better than he does right now and he should follow her lead. Then he tells her that he wants to buy a smoker, he wants to spend time cooking food that takes hours to make and spend time with her and the kids.

Fast forward to Jack, he is cooking food for his wife and using the smoker that his father, Toby bought way back when.

Jack puts the kids to bed, Rebecca tells him that the kids are going to remember the Sundays that made earlier that day with him and not what happened at the movie theater. It is late, the phone rings, Jack takes the call, his mother died.

THE END!
