Tonight’s This Is Us episode begins with Rebecca, Jack, and the kids at the pool. Rebecca is trying to get Kate in the pool who looks afraid. Then, we fast forward to when the kids are maybe in their late teens and trying to hop a fence. Rebecca is scared to do it, while Kevin and Randall have already hopped over. A state trooper arrives and cuts the chain to the fence, letting Kate get through. He sees Kevin with beer and confiscates it, then tells them that is illegal trespassing and underage drinking, they are in for a busy night. Kate is upset, she says this can’t be happening. Randall goes to speak to the officer.
Fast forward to the present day, Rebecca is telling the kids that she is sick and she is asking them to be fearless. Later, Randall goes to sit with Beth, she says it is Thanksgiving and they knew there was going to be drama. Deja comes running down the stairs, she says now she knows why Malik has been quiet, Randall told him to break up with her. She tells Randall that she really hates him. Beth tells her that she doesn’t mean that.
Deja says he lied to her. He says he didn’t think Malik would listen to him. Rebecca and Miguel come downstairs to see if everything is ok. Randall tells Deja that dropping out of high school to get her GED to move to Boston to live with her single father’s boyfriend is not a good idea. She tells him that she is not her daughter, she is just some girl he took from her mom.
The next day, Kevin and Kate are the first to leave. Kevin tells Randall that he is leaving and he is going to go live his fearless best life for mom. Randall goes into the kitchen, Beth walks in panicked, she can’t find Deja anywhere. Randall goes and asks Tess where Deja is, she says she left last night. She went to Malik. Randall grabs his things, he says he is going to go get his daughter. Rebecca tells them to take a moment and think about this. Randall sarcastically says to Rebecca that maybe he should let Kate take care of this since she takes care of the big things now. Randall asks Miguel to drive Beth and the girls home, Rebecca tells Randall she is going with him. He says it is not necessary, but she gets in the car.
While driving, Randall tries to call Deja and Malik but they both don’t answer. He is clearly upset, Rebecca tries to calm him before he gets there. He tells her that Deja has done this before. She said she was going on a sleepover and she went to Boston behind his back. He says he was not like this with Beth, she tells him that everyone’s love story is not the same. Then she goes on to tell him about when she was fifteen and she had her first crush.
She brings up what he said about Kate, and he says he shouldn’t have said that so she lets it go. They stop for some food so Rebecca can take her meds. Before eating, Rebecca wants a photo of the two of them and gets the waitress to do it. Rebecca tries to open her pill bottle and can’t, Randall does it for her. Beth calls Randall, Deja is in Boston, she arrived safely. Rebecca tells Randall to give Deja some space, just for the night, to figure this out.
Back to the state trooper, Randall talks him out of pressing any charges, he tells Kevin to not litter next time. Kevin hugs Randall. Kate tells them that they can head to the diner, she has the keys. Kevin goes to put some music on the jukebox, Randall goes to call mom to tell her they are ok.
Rebecca and Randall head to a bar since he has agreed to give Deja some time. Rebecca takes another photo, then she orders Chianti, but they only have red and white. He tells her to get her phone, they will do a wine selfie. She asks him to play darts, she used to play off all the time with Jack.
Randall calls Rebecca to tell her that he, Kevin and Kate are at the diner. She is upset about Miguel, what happened at Thanksgiving and he tells her to look in his backpack, he has happy face cookies there. She takes one and smiles, it is their favorite cookies.
Randall got a hotel for he and his mother, they are both brushing their teeth and getting ready for bed. She keeps having flashbacks to earlier years when they have done similar things together. He tells her that his name is on a potential list for senator. She is overwhelmed with joy. He tells her that he hasn’t even decided if he wants it yet, he doesn’t want to make any life decisions with so much uncertainty in the family.
The next day, they are outside talking and she tells him that when Jack died, he really rose to the occasion, he was there for her anytime she needed him. And, he didn’t go to the college he wanted to because he wanted to take care of her. She says it was a lot to ask of him, it was too much and that is why she couldn’t make him the executor. He is her hero, the most incredible person and she will not be the person that holds him back anymore. Randall is crying. Deja calls, Randall tells her he will be right there. Randall arrives at Malik’s apartment, he takes Deja’s bag, she goes to the car.
Malik tells him he didn’t do this because of him. Randall tells him that things have a way of coming back around if they are meant to be. Malik thanks him for looking out for him and being his mentor. Randall tells him that he is a good kid and to take care of himself. Malik goes in the apartment, the three of them leave. Deja says everything has been so intense for them since they got together. So maybe in the future, just not now. She tells Randall that she is sorry about what she aid, she doesn’t want to talk about it, but he is her dad. Rebecca says lets go home.
Back to the diner, the kids are all sitting down having a coffee and Kevin wants to know what Randall said to the officer. He told him that his father died two years ago, they are struggling, he has been trying to carry this family on his back and if his mom gets a call that they are in trouble, they might not make it. And, he would like to be president one day, so he can’t be arrested.
Deja walks in the door, Beth hugs her, then Rebeca walks in and Miguel hugs her. The next day, Randall and Beth see Rebecca and Miguel out, they are going home. She asks Randall for one more selfie for the road.
Back to the pool, Randall passed his swimming lesson. He tags Kevin and they both jump in the pool. Jack jumps in after them, then Kate wants to go in and Jack reaches for her. Rebecca joins them and they all smile and play in the pool.
At home, Rebecca has a box with Randall’s name on, she puts a paper that was written about him in it. We see that she has a box for each child.
Randall makes the call, he is going to speak to the senator.
Kate is at the top of the hill that walked up, she makes that call to ask to be considered for the job. She gets back to Toby’s apartment and tells him that’s he is not ready to move to San Francisco yet, she is sorry.
