In tonight’s 9-1-1 episode, Buck was rushed to the hospital. They were able to get his pulse back, but he was still in danger and Buck himself was in an in-between realm. Somewhere between life and death. Buck didn’t realize he was in danger. It wasn’t until he was living in an alternate reality that some things started to add up.

He had his brother in this new world. The one that died when he was a baby. Only his brother was alive and happy and he made the family better. Their parents were happier. Maddie seemed happier. There was just one thing that didn’t add up. And it let Buck know that he might not be alive.

Maddie used to wonder what would happen if their brother had lived. This new reality however proved that she wouldn’t actually have been happier because she still would have ended up with Doug. Doug was what set Buck’s alarm bell ringing. Buck remembers rescuing his sister from her abusive husband. He remembered he missed the warning signs before and so he didn’t want to do that again. Buck got Maddie alone. He lifted up her sleeve. He saw for himself the hand shaped bruised where Doug grabbed her.

Seeing his sister like that was what pushed Buck to confront this alternate reality. He knew he must be in a coma to be dreaming and just to make sure he was right he went to Chimney for advice. Chimney had thought he was a crazy person at first. Chimney hadn’t known who Buck was nor were they firefighters together.

But Buck remembered enough about Chimney to allow this other Chimney to lower his guard around his friend. Buck still remembered how Chimney got his nickname. He also asked about the others.

It turns out Bobby dies in this alternate universe. Buck died five years ago. He fell off the wagon and started drinking again. It happened after the airplane crash. Buck and Hen never checked up on him after the crash and so they had no clue he was drinking again until it led to Bobby’s death.

Chimney being his usual self, no matter what timeline, enlisted Hen’s help. Hen in this universe had thought Buck was crazy only Buck managed to grab her attention as well. Buck proved he knew too much about the firefighters to be some average joe. And so he asked about their other friend.

He asked about Eddie. Eddie never met Carla without Buck’s help. Eddie went on to lose custody of his son and he became known as the angry guy. Buck may not have realized it at the time, but he had helped a lot of people when he became a firefighter. He saved lives. He was a teacher in this alternate reality. He helps kids. He seemed to be good at the job because his students love him. It just wasn’t his calling. Not like being a firefighter was. Buck did everything he could to become and stay a firefighter.

He once fought for the job. It was now time to fight for himself. Buck realized that. He stopped breathing and he realized that his actual body must have stopped breathing as well. Buck knew that if he died in this alternate reality that he would die in the real world too. Buck didn’t want to die. He wanted to leave purgatory. He wanted to rejoin the living. Except there was a little part of him that didn’t want to give up his parents’ love. He finally got that when his brother survived. They weren’t consumed by their grief to not notice him and he didn’t have to keep doing dangerous things to grab just a smidge of their attention.

Buck was finally able to feel what real love from his parents felt like. He didn’t want to give that up and so he saw Bobby’s ghost in his coma dream. Bobby reminded him that if he judged himself by the opinions of others then he hasn’t learned a single thing. Bobby’s ghost was mean. He kept pushing Buck just to get Buck in a place where he admitted that he saved Bobby’s life. He did that by being himself. He built a family for himself with the 118. He convinced his sister that she was brave enough to leave Doug.

Buck forced his parents to finally leave their grief long enough to see him. They may not have loved him the way they loved Daniel, but they loved him in their own way and he had to let that be enough for him. Buck confronted all of his worse fears as well as his greatest dream. He did all of that to remind him that he reinvented himself more times than he could count. He was Buck. Buck started breathing on his own. He came to in the real world. He was told to take it easy for a couple of weeks and he told the doctor that he wasn’t the type of guy.

Buck was the first to rush in. He wasn’t going to be taking it easy. Buck was happier than he’s ever been now that he’s awake and his near death scared a lot of people. It even had Chimney inviting his dad to stay on in LA longer.

Chimney saw for himself that his father wasn’t cold. He was just too proud for his own good and they can work on that.

THE END!
