In tonight’s Chicago PD episode, Detective Atwater was first on the scene of a shooting. He was visiting his old neighborhood to check on some friends that still live there, but both he and Ms. Castillo heard gunshots. The gunshots sounded nearby. Atwater went to go check out the scene. He wanted to see if anyone needed help.

He ended up finding his father administering first aide to a kid that got shot. The kid’s name is Malik. He was eleven years old. He was one of the kids that Lew Atwater took under his wings. Lew keeps an eye on the kids in the neighborhood.

Lew claims that he helps them with things. He fixes their bikes or put air int their footballs. He looks out for them and their friends. Not all of the kids live in the neighborhood. The one that shot Malik was one of those kids that didn’t live there.

Lew hadn’t seen anything, but Ms. Castillo did. She said she saw a kid running out of the building not long after the gunshots. She recognized him as someone that always hung around Lew and Malik. She didn’t know his name. She just knew that he always wore a red coat.

Malike was rushed to the hospital. He was fighting to hold on as Atwater questioned his father about this kid. He asked him to identify the kid who always wearing a red coat and Lew said that’s Oscar.

Atwater later went with his unit to Oscar’s house. Oscar’s parents weren’t in. His sister was there and she let the cops in. She even gave them permission to search Oscar’s room because Oscar wasn’t answering her knock. It turns out that Oscar escaped through his window. He left behind a bag covered in Malik’s blood. And inside the bag was heroin.

His sister had no idea where the heroin came from. She claimed her brother wasn’t in a gang. Lew also said the same after he stopped by his son’s office. He wanted to know if Oscar was going to be alright and Atwater was telling him the truth when he said it didn’t look good for Oscar.

He told Lew that Oscar was running. Lew reminded his son that Oscar was twelve. He wasn’t running. He was hiding. Lew knew Oscar’s hangout spots. He later brought his son and Burgess to the spot and they found Oscar.

Oscar had a gun on him. He pulled it when they tried to arrest him. Lew had to get between the cops and Oscar because he didn’t want Oscar to get hurt. He managed to convince Oscar to hand over the gun. Oscar was arrested. They got a lawyer for him and Lew stayed by his side the whole time. Lew had wanted to help, but he couldn’t help someone who didn’t want to help themselves. Oscar said he accidentally shot Malik. He said they were playing with the gun and it went off. He never meant to hurt his friend. He was just showing off.

Oscar said the gun as well as the drugs were his. Lew wouldn’t believe it. He said he knew Oscar. Oscar wasn’t in a gang. Lew often walks the kids after school to keep the gangs from recruiting them and they respect him for being an OG. He would know if Oscar was in a gang. He told his son that Oscar was lying. The gun wasn’t his and neither were the drugs. Lew wouldn’t believe it no matter how much Oscar kept saying it. Lew later left the station in anger. He had been asked to leave by his son. And yet Atwater continued to look into where the gun came from.

Oscar didn’t get the drugs or the gun on his own. Someone had to give it to him. He was trying to protect that person and the cops needed answers before they could charge Oscar. Malik had died at the hospital. It was now a homicide. They now had to find who was pulling the strings and so they looked into Oscar’s history. They tried to see where he went. Who he talked to. They found out he visited a shady motel and they figured the drugs must have come from there.

The cops went to the motel. They were knocking on doors when they saw someone leaving his place and announced themselves. This guy made a run for it. He assaulted two cops to escape. Which he did. He got away. The cops went back to the place he left. They found his fingerprints. He was Carlos Zapataro. He was Oscar’s father. He didn’t raise Oscar. He was mostly in prison throughout Oscar’s childhood. He just got out of a prison in Indiana and he came to Chicago and it seems he started up his drug dealing business again.

Carlos was dangerous. Oscar wouldn’t speak against him and so the cops tried to find Carlos on their own. They later spotted Carlos talking to Lew. They tried to get Lew to come outside. He refused to do so. So, the cops tried to arrest Carlos without anyone else getting hurt, but Carlos saw them coming. He took Lew hostage. Lew broke free. They took down Carlos. It turns out Lew was trying to prove the drugs Oscar had were actually Carlos’s. He was hoping to buy drugs from Carlos to prove they were a match to the ones found in Oscar’s room only the police moved in before he got the evidence.

They later tried to appeal to Carlos’s better nature. They asked him to admit the drugs and gun were his to save his son. Only Carlos didn’t care about Oscar. He denied any connection to the things found on Oscar. He said Oscar could fend for himself. And because this was recorded, Atwater showed Oscar the video.

He broke Oscar’s heart, but Oscar finally started telling the truth and all he wants is to visit Carlos in jail.

And this case helped bring Lew and his son closer.

THE END!
