In tonight’s NCIS episode, NCIS was in charge of security at a high-profile event. Some delegates from the Venezuelan Navy were visiting DC.

They were hoping to come to an agreement with the American Navy that would allow both nations to learn from each other and trade intel as well weapons. Director Vance was going to be a prominent figure at the negotiations. NCIS was supposed to protect him however they were too late to protect one of their own.

Diego Barreto was US Navy. He was also undercover with the Venezuelan government. He managed to climb up through their ranks. He traveled to the states with them. He was meeting with Vance before the official negotiations when he died.

Diego died horribly. He bled everywhere. Vance tried to save him and couldn’t. It left the Director with an unfortunate situation. Vance couldn’t call 911.

He couldn’t let the Venezuelans know that he was speaking with one of their own off the books. It would lead to them wondering why Barreto? Why did he have to secretly talk to Barreto?

Barreto’s cover was technically still safe as long as everyone doesn’t dig too deep into his fake background and so Vance reached out to Parker. It was Parker that came up with an idea to get them out of this situation.

Parker called his team. He also called Jimmy. They were going to sneak Barreto out of the building in a body bag, It was going well until Vance’s secretary felt bad for the camera crews.

There were several news stations that was covering the visit from the Venezuelans. They were supposed to be outside for a press conference, but Vance’s secretary didn’t want to leave them out in the rain. She invited them indoors. She didn’t know about the dead guy in Vance’s office. She allowed the news station to film and take photos of everything.

It was a miracle they managed to sneak out a body under those conditions. Much less clean up the blood in Vance’s office. The team really did come together for this one.

They were left waiting to hear back when Barreto’s body was officially found because they wanted this case. The team was investigating what little information Barreto gave before he died. Barreto told Vance that a prominent member of the Venezuelan team was trying to sabotage the talks with the American government.

The undercover agent never had the chance to name this saboteur because that’s when the poison kicked in.

Barreto was poisoned in the United States. The team gave some of his blood samples to Kasie. She quickly realized that this murder took place in Vance’s office and she promised to keep quiet.

She also confirmed that poison was fast-acting. It meant he couldn’t have been poisoned before his trip. He had to have been injected while he was stateside. Then the call came in. NCIS was informed about Barreto’s death. He was found by a maid and so what stumped the team was the fact that there was a second body in the hotel room.

McGee said the second body wasn’t there when they dropped off Barreto. There was no identification on the body. No one knew who the other guy was. Jimmy was even saying this was bad because there’s no way they could cover up the murder of two men. There was also a journalist snooping around.

Her name was Robyn Kael. She somehow found out about Barreto’s death before the Venezuelan government did. She also demanded to know what Director Vance was hiding. Parker had her escorted from the building, but it was getting harder to cover up this crime.

Both bodies were taken back to NCIS. Jimmy did the autopsy on both. He had a Venezuelan guard watch his every move. The Venezuelan government wanted oversight with this investigation.

The Americans were playing along until Jimmy identified the second victim. The second victim was Dimitry Yorgi. He was an Eastern European hitman. He was known for using poisons. He was killed hours after Barreto. Which indicated that Yorgi killed Barreto. Yorgi was then killed to cover up the part he played in Barreto’s death.

Or so they thought.

The team looked into Barreto’s last movements. They saw he was in frequent contact with Fernando Vega. Vega’s brother was killed by an American ops team. He has ample reason to not want this alliance with Americans to go through. Vega’s fingerprints were also found on Yorgi’s neck. NCIS located Vega.

He was meeting with someone. Both were ultimately arrested. Vega was meeting with Lena Paulson. Vance’s Lena Paulson. They were friends with benefits. She was in town because she was acting as an UN representative. And she lied to Vance when she said she left Germany’s spy ring.

Lena was still representing BND. She was called back in because Vega was her asset. Vega and Barreto had adjoining rooms. When Vega overheard someone moving around Barreto’s room, he checked and he found Yorgi take photos of the body. Vega interrupted him. They got into a fight that ended with Vega killing Yorgi.

He then called his handler to report what happened. Vance was mad at Lena for keeping secrets. She was mad at him for keeping secrets. The relationship might not recover after this.

Vance was wondering about his future when the team realized who was the mastermind. The mastermind was the journalist. Kael was no longer working for the paper.

She was also the source that Knight gave the tidbit to. NCIS fed the journalist information about ramping up security for the negotiations as means of flushing out the mastermind, but all they did was put Kael on guard. She abducted Lena. She was threatening to kill Lena if Vance didn’t call off negotiations with the Venezuelans.

Kael even sent a proof of life video. Kael was radicalized by Hezbollah and so she didn’t want the American government to spread its reach in the world. Only NCIS soon found Kael. She was dumb enough not to remove Lena’s smartwatch. The one that can be tracked. Kael was taken down and the team learned she wasn’t their killer.

She didn’t kill Barreto or order it. Venezuelan Admiral Carlos Mendoza killed Barreto. He was in charge of negotiating with Director Vance. He risked that to kill Barreto. Mendoza killed him because Barreto was sleeping with his wife. He wanted revenge and did it in a different country so that his own people wouldn’t figure it out.

He didn’t count on NCIS. They found evidence of Mendoza’s involvement and he was quietly going to quit. And return to his native country to face charges.

As for Vance, he realized that he wants something more with Lena. They agreed to finally give the relationship a chance and it helps that she really was going to walk away from the BND this time.

THE END!
