On tonight’s Chicago Fire episode, Natalie had stopped by the fire station. Kidd hadnt been there at the time. Her husband was there and he talked to Natalie.

Natalie once survived a house fire thanks to Kidd. Kidd rescued Natalie’s whole family. The fire was ruled accidentally back then and Natalie was coming forward to say something different now.

She was starting to remember what happened during the fire. Her memories were telling her that her sister intentionally set the fire and she doesn’t know how to prove it. She could however show that there was nothing wrong with her memory. Natalie dropped off an old photo for Kidd. And Kid remembered it.

It was the photo that Natalie was holding onto when Kidd carried her out of the building. Natalie remembered more than people give her credit for. She gave the photo to Kidd so that someone would finally believe her. Only Severide looked into the fire. He knew the arson investigator that worked the scene.

He was a great guy and an even better fire investigator. He ruled the fire as accidentally. Severide believed him. He also did due diligence and he looked through the file. There were no signs that someone committed arson.

Or that Natalie’s sister tried to kill her whole family. The sister was Natalie’s guardian nowadays. Their mom walked out. They didn’t have a dad in the picture.

It was just the two of them and the sister was claiming that Natalie was a liar that liked the attention. There was no telling who was telling the truth. Kidd also couldn’t contact Natalie right away. She and Severide got some news. They were hoping to adopt and they were the first choice for a woman that went into labor on tonight’s episode.

The couple still needed to do a final interview with the bio-mom. Yes, they were her first choice. She just never got around to actually talking to them because she thought she had extra time and she didn’t.

Her name is Jade. She tried to interview the couple during labor. She found out they were firefighters. Kidd was kind. She has experience with babies. Severide was a great swaddler. He delivered plenty of babies in the field. They were good people and Jade got to see that for herself. Her contractions were getting bad. And Kidd let her squeeze her hand.

It was all going perfectly until the hospital found something. Jade hid her addiction to opioids. She also hadnt stopped taking drugs. She last got high two days before she went into labor and her labor pains were masking the fact that she’s going through withdrawal. If she was experiencing it that badly, the baby was suffering even more.

The child might be born with its own withdrawal symptoms. He or she might also have other side-effects from what Jade did. The baby could be born disabled. There was also chance that it might be stillborn.

The baby’s heart slowed down for a bit. Dr. Asher was able to bring it back up. She was also going to run tests to see if the baby was addicted and she warned the potential adoptive parents that she thinks it was going to be the case. Just based on what she heard from Jade. Jade didn’t just relapse once.

She’s been frequently getting high. The social worker on the case warned Kidd and Severide that the baby would come with challenges. Only Kidd didn’t care. She still wanted to adopt the baby. Severide agreed to it because Kidd had already said they would.

The two talked afterwards. Severide doesn’t have a problem raising a special needs child. He was more upset that Kidd was making decisions without discussing them with him first.

He can handle challenging surprises with grace. He’s proven that many times and so Kidd apologized for jumping in, but they both agreed that they were onboard with the baby. Jade started experiencing blood loss. She needed to be rushed into surgery for an emergency c-section. She asked if Kidd could come with her and Dr. Asher allowed it because Jade was scared.

Jade was nineteen. She was struggling with drugs. She doesn’t know what to do with her life. Kidd understood her. Kidd used to have the same problem at Jade’s age and so she told Jade about her experience earlier. She said what got her through it was knowing that something great awaited for her on the other side.

Kidd got Jade talking about her dreams. Jade wanted to be a teacher once. She could still be if things don’t take a turn during surgery. Severide was also in the waiting room when Jade’s father showed up.

Things got awkward when Severide introduced himself as the adoptive father. Jade’s dad hadnt spoken to her in two years because of the drug addiction. He kicked her out hoping that would get her to realize she had a problem and it didn’t work.

She kept using. She got pregnant. She didn’t tell her dad anything. He was called to the hospital because he was still her emergency contact. He wanted to be there for his daughter and his heart broke a little when he found out that Jade never stopped taking drugs during her pregnancy.

He thought it best that she gives up the baby.

Back at the firehouse, there was a bit of an issue. Chief Pascal called out. Kidd and Severide were gone at the same time as a few others. Meaning they were short-staffed. Hermann was in charge and he was doing his best when an auditor showed up. Their firehouse was being audited.

The auditor brought up the fact that Chicago Fire Department was struggling in this economy and that they wanted to make cuts. These cuts sometimes led to them shutting down an entire engine. And the firefighters from said engine usually ended up in the floater pool.

They tried to show the auditor that they were useful. He complained about them having a backup plan. He said it led to redundancy. The firefighters called it a failsafe.

He was picking apart everything. He was also running a fever. He was sweating a lot. He had headaches. He stole someone’s private aspirin bottle. He also refused to take his coat off because he said it was the closest thing he had to a uniform. The guy got the job after he created an app on creating efficiency in several departments.

The firehouse had to pick up some baby stuff for Kidd and Severide. They did their best to hide it from the auditor. They were getting back to the firehouse when Ambrose the auditor collapsed. He was overheated. The firefighters had to hose him down. He woke up better than ever. He even wondered why he was wet, but the baby things were all for nothing.

Jade decided to keep the baby. She talked to her dad and he agreed to take temporary guardianship while she goes to rehab. Jade saw that Kidd could turn her life around. And it convinced her that she could do the same.

Ambrose also had some news to share. The goods news was that Firehouse 51 was deemed efficient. The bad news was that there were still going to be cuts and the older firefighters will be pushed to take retirement. Which meant that both Herrmann and Mouch could be out of a job soon.

The firefighters agreed to hold onto the baby stuff for when Severide and Kidd do get their own baby.

THE END!
