In tonight’s Chicago Fire episode, the budget cuts were finally hit Firehouse 51! It wasn’t pretty. Mouch and his crew were told to sit out shift with barely two hours notice. It frustrated Chief Pascal.

He hated that the city had lost so much money that first responders were getting cut. It left the city in a vulnerable position. They were already dealing with issues after the call centers got cuts and now it was their time to suffer. They got their first call. There was an ambulance had flipped over. Violet recognized it when she saw it. It belonged to her friend, Murphy.

Murphy was still trapped inside. The firefighters had to get her out. It’s just that Violet didn’t wait for them. She immediately went to her friend’s side and reassured her that they were going to help her. Severide kindly asked her to get down because they have a job to do. The ambulance wasn’t empty.

Murphy had a partner. She also had a patient in the back. It sucks that Violet had to focus on the man that was in distress only she was around long enough to see Murphy get freed as well as loaded into her own ambulance.

No one knew what caused the ambulance to overturn. It didn’t appear to be a car accident. It couldn’t have been caused by a sharp turn because Murphy was an experienced driver.

She and Violet were the academy together. She bonded over that time. They became friends. Violet was there when Murphy met her husband. Murphy went on to have a little girl. Violet couldn’t remember how old she was because she hasn’t checked in for a while. She got caught up in the job. Then in her relationships. The friendship fell through the cracks.

Violet was still at the hospital after dropping off the patient. She decided to go check on Murphy. Murphy was having a CT scan done and so she ran into Murphy’s paramedic partner.

He said something. It was off the cuff. Violet wasn’t sure if she heard him right. Still, he said that the accident was his fault. How was it his fault? Violet didn’t know and she needed to find out. She needed to know what happened to Murphy. Murphy suffered traumatic brain injury from the accident. It was possible she won’t remember what happened at all.

Her partner wasn’t talking anymore. Pierce claimed to their Chief that he had no clue what happened. He said everything was fine until he found himself thrown around. Violet got angry on her friend’s behalf and so she confronted Pierce with Novak at her side. They demanded to know what he meant when he said the accident was his fault. Pierce then admitted that he knew how tired Murphy was. He never should have let her drive. It wasn’t an accident at all. She fell asleep at the wheel and that’s what almost killed them.

The budget cuts affected them too. They were on twenty-four hours shifts with barely any rest time. They were so busy because of all the cuts that Murphy shouldn’t have been driving. Pierce was in the back when he felt the ambo drifting to the side. He called out Murphy’s name. It jolted her awake and she tried too hard to course correct. That’s what caused the accident. Pierce just didn’t report it because he didn’t want his friend getting in trouble. It was still a problem. They couldn’t have people falling asleep at the wheel.

Murphy later woke up at the hospital. She remembered everything. She was in contact with her union lawyer. She wasn’t going to admit fault. It didn’t matter what Violet said. She couldn’t afford to lose her job when the city was broke. She has a family think about. She was going to maintain her silence on what happened. Pierce wasn’t going to speak against her. This was going to happen again. If not with her, then with someone else. Violet got a call and so she couldn’t argue with Murphy about the right thing.

Kidd was also having issues with her foster son. He didn’t really talk to her. everyone at the station said that was normal for a teenage boy. Herrmann’s son quit soccer without telling anyone. They found out about it because Cindy accidentally ran into the coach at the bank. Cruz had to join his son’s Fortnite server just to find out who was dating. Teenage boys especially weren’t interested in discussing with their mothers on foster mothers in Kidd’s case. She didn’t even know he needed new sneakers if she hadn’t figured out he tried to cover a ripped sole by coloring them in.

Kidd then had to watch her husband take an enormous risk. There was a boat out of control. The driver was passed out. Possibly from a heart attack. The boat was still running. Severide had to jump on this moving boat. He then saved the man’s life and stopped them from crashing into the river wall. It turns out the man’s daughter was in the back. She injured her elbow and Herrmann fixed it for her. It gave Violet an idea. Violet talked to Murphy again and they came up with a comprehensive plan to deal with the shortages.

Pascal tried to deal with them too. He went back to Annette Davis. He asked for a better plan to deal with the city’s deficit. She told him that they came up with a plan with CFD. They were going to reduce the number of battalions. They were letting six battalion chiefs go. Pascal wasn’t one of them. Annette also asked him out for drinks. Which he wasn’t ready for. His wife has been dead less than a year. He wasn’t ready to let go of her or start up with someone new. There was another part that suspected Annette was working an angle that he hadn’t seen up to now.

Violet worked out a plan with Murphy i. Murphy was going to come forward. They were going to bring on firefighters without shifts to work as EMTs. They were already trained in the field. It was a workaround the hiring freeze. If they didn’t want to be potentially sued, the brass was going to have to bend on this rule.

And Kidd took Isaiah to see his mom at the hospital. She developed fluid on the brain. She had to have surgery and she was intubated and in a coma when Isaiah pushed his way into seeing her for himself.

THE END!
