In tonight’s Chicago Med episode, Owen was shot. The bullet did some damage to his kidneys. It was all very treatable. Until they realized that Owen has an issue with his kidney from before the shooting.
He has a horse shoe condition. His two kidneys are connected together by a blood vessel of tissue. This meant that one failing would lead to both failing. Dr. Dean Archer took him to the hybrid OR. He’s been working on him for hours. Natalie took the redeye out of Seattle and she was back in Chicago to find out what happened to her son.
There was nothing that her husband could have done to prevent this. Sure, the hospital wasn’t the safest place to visit. The violence against hospital workers was only increasing with each year.
Will brought him to the hospital to help treat a kid and then he made a promise to stay until the kid woke up following his surgery. It’s just that that promise could cost him Owen. Owen was his stepson. It didn’t matter to Will because he’s been in Owen’s life literally since day one. He was there when Natalie went into labor.
However, it didn’t look good that Will was being comforted by Dr. Hannah Asher while Owen was still in surgery. His pregnant wife seemed to mind. She came storming in and wasn’t happy.
She hugged Will because if nothing else he’s proven he will always choose her. He didn’t even care if it risked his career or not. It’s what almost got him fired before he was fired for another reason. Will was fine. Asher could be a problem in Natalie’s eyes. Natalie’s first concern was her son and so Owen’s situation will determine everything.
Natalie was pregnant again. She was at the same trimester she was when she heard her first husband had died in combat. Pregnancy was usually supposed to be the happiest time in a mother’s life.
For Natalie, it was starting to make her believe she was cursed. She couldn’t believe she went through another tragedy and the hits kept coming in her case. She learned that they couldn’t save Owen’s kidneys because what they feared had actually happened. One failure lead to both failing. Owen was going to need a new kidney.
The plan was to start him on dialysis to hold him over until he gets the new kidney. Will wanted to get tested himself to see if he could be a match. He also remembered that Natalie’s late husband had a cousin in the area.
He asked her to reach out to them in case they were a match. It was time to start calling everyone if it meant helping Owen. Natalie soon reached out to everyone she could think of. She found out that no one could donate. The closest family member was going through chemotherapy. Will wasn’t a match. Natalie didn’t want to wait on the luck of the donor list.
If they close up Owen, it would be four months on dialysis before he could have surgery. Natalie refused to wait that long. She asked them to test her if she was a match. She didn’t care that she was pregnant. She was going to donate her kidney to her son come hell or high water. Natalie was still considering the possibility when a case came in that hit Dr. Frost and Dr. Lenox quite hard. There was a couple that came in after an accident. One of the men was fine. The other was ruled out as brain dead.
Julian was only surviving on life support. His partner was his legal proxy. They just weren’t married and that led to Julian’s parents contesting his partner’s wishes. They were willing to take Julian off life support.
They just wanted it to be on their terms. Preferably after the doctors had retrieved his sperm so that they could have a grandchild. Julian never wanted kids. He never wanted to have his parents in his life. He would be turning in his grave if he learned that they used his legally living corpse to commit abuse against another child.
Julian was emotionally abused. He had a padlock on his door so that he couldn’t leave. He grew up hating his parents and distanced himself from them the moment he became an adult. They were now changing their stories to imply that it was Julian’s partner that caused the estrangement.
That he came between them. Frost knew differently because he’s been an abused kid. He even saw how it broke the partner when Julian was ruled as having no chance of recovery. And he didn’t want those parents to have another victim if the partner was right.
This went to the hospital’s lawyer. The judge would make a decision the next day. It was deemed that in the meantime it was best to retrieve the sperm while it was still viable. It will be up to the judge to decide if the sperm can or cannot be used. Frost hated it. He hated that they were overruling Julian’s wishes.
Lenox hated it too. She said they should focus on remaining professional. She then broke her own rule when she spoke with the parents again. They had found a fertility specialist. They couldn’t wait to get the DNA material. Their son wishes didn’t matter to them.
It never mattered to them. Lenox called them out on it. She essentially said something before Frost could and now the parents don’t want either doctor to be near their son. Natalie meanwhile got what she wanted. She was donating a kidney in spite of being heavily pregnant. Her child wasn’t viable yet.
They had to be really careful during surgery and eventually they got the kidney. Will tried to talk her out of the surgery beforehand. Asher attempted to do the same. Natalie snapped at her. And then she snapped at Will.
Natalie didn’t believe either of them was putting Owen first. She told Will that it broke her heart that he wasn’t prioritizing Owen as much as he was doing so for their unborn child. He told her that was unfair. She was being cruel and that wasn’t like her. The things she said to Asher were also out of line.
After a successful surgery, Natalie was feeling much better. It was the stress that caused her to act out. She apologized to everyone. She and her baby were okay. Owen was off dialysis. He later woke up and talked to Will. They both agreed that Will can adopt him.
Will has been the only father Owen has ever known. He didn’t care that he missed the Bears game. He was just glad that Will loves him as much as he loves the new baby.
And Dr. Ripley working with Dr. Charles helped a combat vet in a fugue state come back to himself, but even better news was that Julian’s parents didn’t get rights to the sperm. There will be no grandchildren for them.
THE END!
