In tonight’s Chicago PD episode, Sergeant Voight’s unit was disbanded. It was allegedly temporary. Deputy Chief Reid wanted the office to be investigated by Internal Affairs and any further signs of corruption would result in a more permanent disbandment. What no one realized that Reid wasn’t the good guy in all of this.
He wasn’t impartial. He disbanded that unit because they were investigating for police corruption. Reid got in bed with some dangerous people. He helps out drug dealers, shot-callers, and cops he knew he could blackmail because he likes using the department as well as its resources as a playground. He loves having people fear him.
Reid killed one of the drug dealers paying him protection money for betraying him. It’s how he knew that Voight was investigating him. He told Voight early on to never cross him. Voight did and Reid was prepared to destroy everything Voight built with Intelligence out of spite.
Voight couldn’t access his computer or his office. Neither could anyone else in the unit. They were locked out of their building. Detective Kim Burgess was fired. Torres was arrested. Reid wanted to quash them so badly that they could never make another move against him.
If they tried, he could claim it was retaliation for the investigation. The one path forward was to get enough evidence against him that he could politic his way out of it. Voight couldn’t do that alone. He thought he could and Nina reminded him that he needed his family. The whole unit met secretly.
This included both Platt and Nina because they were one of them now. Voight gave them money to use to further the investigation. He also asked that two of them go speak with Rennie Otero again. Burgess went with Ruzek.
They got to talking on the drive. They considered postponing their wedding. They realized that they wouldn’t be happy going ahead until they closed this case and so they talked to Rennie. Rennie was mostly kept out of his father’s family business. He saw his dad with Reid once. There was another officer with Reid at the time.
He was younger. He was Latino and in his thirties. He loved showing off his badge. Rennie said he was definitely a cop. Rennie was considered a loose thread and Reid sent people to kill him.
There’s no telling how the hitman found Rennie’s safehouse. The cops were protecting the boy since his father was assassinated. They were worried he was the next target. Evidence showed they weren’t wrong. The shooter didn’t care about collateral damage. He was the one that killed Rennie’s father.
He used the same gun on the father’s murder than he did trying to kill the son. Voight collected the shells from the safehouse to hide what really happened there. He privately had them tested.
It said that it was the same murder weapon in Otero’s homicide, Jessa Clark’s homicide, and more. It was last in possession of Juan Turlo. He was a local drug dealer.
Voight had a criminal informant lure Turlo into a trap. He then used that to forced Turlo into cooperating. Voight wanted to know who has the gun now and Turlo said it was a cop. He got ripped off by a cop. This cop stole his gun on top of his drugs. His name is Joseph Caldera. Rennie later confirmed this was the man working with Reid.
Rennie wasn’t doing too good. He was scared. His father was murdered because ofough him. He was facing charges. Dirty cops wanted him dead. Rennie wasn’t willing to trust anyone and that included the cops that saved his life. He said no one could save him now that cops were hunting him.
Voight and his people tried to rebuild trust. They found Caldera. They tried to get him to turn on Reid. Only Caldera refused. He was afraid of Reid. He was so scared that he forced the car transporting him off the road.
It crashed. Voight survived. Ruzek survived. Caldera died from internal injuries. Voight still tried to use it. He told Reid that his days were numbered and Reid was willing to call his bluff.
Reid was well-guarded. He knew that nothing mattered with Caldera died. Reid was going to keep being safe. Voight’s unit couldn’t find anything else to use against Reid. It was starting to get to Voight and so Voight decided to return to his roots. He wanted to get revenge. He just had to survive long enough to do it.
Sergeant Voight was meeting with the brass. Reid was also at that meeting. Rennie somehow got there too. He spotted Reid and he killed him. He shot several times because he wanted to make sure that Reid was done. With Reid dead, Rennie was forced to tell the investigators why he did it.
He said that Reid had his father killed and that they were in charge of the drug operation in Lawndale. Ha named names. Reid being dead also meant he couldn’t combat all the allegations coming from Rennie.
Voight’s unit was saved because of this one angry kid. He told Rennie where Reid was going to be. He helped him get a gun that couldn’t be traced back to them.
Voight basically sanctioned Reid’s death. It was only Nina that figured it out. Nina was hoping they could be something more. Voight sadly told her tonight that he doesn’t get more. He only has the unit. Torres was released. Burgess got her badge back. The unit got to come together for Burgess and Ruzek’s wedding. They never got around to postponing it. Fate had other plans for them.
And so they finally got married tonight.
THE END!
