It’s been four weeks since the Intelligence Unit was disbanded. They were disbanded pending investigation. However, Voight thought that would go away once Reid was killed. Reid was now dead and his unit has been displaced. There’s been an uptick in crime since the unit was taken out of commission. They had Voight working in Rapid Response. He wasn’t even leading a team anymore. The person in charge of making a decision about his team was dragging his feet. Commander Devlin was afraid of putting his name to Voight’s and so Voight was left in limbo.

He tried to advocate for his unit. It didn’t work. He tried to bring up the stats. Again, it didn’t work. He was waiting when he got a call from a woman he knew about her nephew. Her nephew hid dope in her vegetable garden and so Voight went in to scare the kid. There was still a chance to put him back on the right path. The cop was speaking to the kid and getting him to dig up all the dope he hid when shots rang out nearby. Voight told aunt and nephew to get down. He pursued the shooter. The guy got away because it took forever for backup to arrive.

The Aunt took a gunshot wound to the stomach. Voight helped stabilized her until the EMTs showed. Her nephew was so concerned that he rode with his aunt. He felt really bad for messing with her garden and just wanted her to be okay. There was another victim of the shooting. He wasn’t as lucky as Aggie. He was also the intended target. His name was William Kenton. He sadly died at the scene. It seems he was involved in a dope deal gone wrong. He had the money on him for it. He also had a weapon on him that he never got to draw. Voight saw the shooter.

The guy got away in a black SUV with a blown out tire. Voight gave the details to the Sergeant on the scene. He wanted to follow this case up personally and he was told Devlin benched him. Devlin had his people remind Voight that he was still in Rapid Response. Not Intelligence. Voight should have left it there and he couldn’t because of Aunt Auggie. He liked the woman. No, not like that. He merely respected her. He respected what she was trying to do with her nephew. Voight couldn’t let this one go.

Being useful kept the demons at bay.

Voight followed up on his lead himself. He found out the driver was known to hang out at Mondo’s though he didn’t get the name of the suspect. He called Detective Ruzek. Ruzek asked him if they were back and they weren’t. Cook has already been reassigned permanently elsewhere. His own wife and Torres were still out on leave. Who knows about Atwater? The team was falling apart and it couldn’t afford for Voight to go off-book. Ruzek tried to tell his boss as much. Voight chose to ignore him.

He still had Ruzek follow up the Mondo’s lead. Ruzek went into the bar pretending the getaway vehicle hit his car. He began asking around the driver to supposedly get his insurance information. He ran into a hothead named Dee. Dee said he never saw Ruzek around before. He thought the story was a lie. He got in Ruzek’s face and so the woman he was with broke open a beer bottle. She used that to buy Dee some time. He ran off while she dealt Ruzek. Ruzek was forced to reveal he was a cop.

The woman ran off after that. Ruzek pursued her. He caught up to her and arrested her. Not that it did him any good. She was ATF. She was federal agent investigating a gun runner known as “Raptor”. It’s only been a month since the investigation started in Chicago. Six people were already dead because of it. This included Aunt Aggie who succumbed to her injuries. The ATF Agent said she would inform her boss to tell their boss about her involvement in Chicago. She just wouldn’t tell Voight herself because she doesn’t answer to beat cops.

Voight ended up telling Ruzek to go back to his beat. He called up Burgess. He asked her to help him follow the ATF Agent. It was supposed to be simple and it wasn’t. Their Agent got made by her source. Dee was going to kill her when Burgess intervened. She shouldn’t have done it. She currently doesn’t have a badge because she’s on leave pending investigation. But she had to do it. She stepped in. She saved Agent Imani’s life. She almost got killed in return and so Voight stepped in. Voight killed Dee.

He covered up Burgess’s involvement in what happened. The agent went along with it. They did save her life after all. She also spoke up with Devlin to protect Voight’s involvement in the shooting. She said she needed backup. Well, she’s got him now. They worked together to find out that Dee was in contact with Raptor. He was supposed to set up a meeting between them. It didn’t happen because the Agent got made. She therefore needed back up from the locals. Voight, Ruzek, and Atwater were that backup.

They eventually found their shooter using his car. They collected a bunch of guns and money from him. Eva Imani didn’t want ATF to cut a deal with the guy. She left Chicago PD take the bust. It got her fired. It also gave Voight the perfect cover. He now had information to blackmail Devlin. Devlin let a bunch of stolen weapons go. He’d be ousted if this got out and he couldn’t afford to let that happen. He let himself be blackmailed by Voight. Now, Intelligence was signed back into creation. Voight remains in charge. He got his team back and he asked Imani to sign on.

They needed someone to fill in now that Cook was gone for good. It was also great to see that Torres and Burgess got their shields back. Intelligence were back to battling homicides/drug deals gone wrong.
