In tonight’s Chicago PD episode, Commander Devlin didn’t like being blackmailed. He still found little ways to annoy Sergeant Voight. His recent means was reminding Voight that he needs to do his requalification for his gun training. The same goes for Detective Imani.

Imani had to recently move after she suspected her landlord was looking through her underwear drawer, but breaking her lease on short notice has left her temporarily homeless.

She also would like a place that didn’t have large cockroaches. She had just gotten into work when Voight told her that they needed to go the gun range and they were heading there in his car when they both noticed someone left an envelope on the vehicle.

There were photos found inside of a bruised child. Normally, this would have brought out Voight’s best as well as worst instincts. He would find the child and rescue them. Then the perp would suffer greatly. That was Voight’s way. He instead chose to act oddly. He completely ignored the photos.

He focused on getting to the gun range and ignored Imani’s questions when she got curious about the photos. It was going well until they got an alert about an armed robbery in the area. This unidentified perp had beaten up a couple and stole their money after they visited the ATM.

He took off in a car that was stolen earlier that day. This perp too was acting oddly. He apologized to the couple he robbed and this was after badly beating the husband. He went on to rob the gas station nearby. He shot the clerk. He beat up a witness in the store.

He was leaving when he began to injure the woman waiting for her husband outside. He kidnapped this woman only to take her to a nearby medical clinic. He bashed in her skull and then tries to get her help? The man was still at large. He was on foot. He was covered in blood.

The cops canvassed the whole area thinking this man would at least stick out like a sore thumb. They had no such luck. They did on the other hand identified his fingerprints.

Their perp was Gary Bell. He comes from old money. His family used to own Bell Tractors. They made billions selling farm supplies. They sold the company. His father has a clean record and he was bankrupt. Gary was staying with him until he started running into trouble. His prints are in the system for a DUI a couple of months back.

The woman he tried to save had later died at the hospital. He was now wanted for murder. How did a trust fund kid go on to petty theft much less kill? Gary has a girlfriend. Her name is Sage. Sage wanted to be a musician and she was already using drugs as if she was famous. Gary tried everything to get her clean. He took her to several NA meetings. Nothing worked. She was dragging him down with her and so his father kicked them out. Or at least that’s the story according to him. The man had his granddaughter to think about in all of this.

The girl was at school. It’s a good thing too because the Bell Mansion was raided for any evidence on Gary’s movements. His father didn’t know where he was living now. He just knew that Gary loved Sage more than anything. He didn’t think his son wasn’t a bad guy. He even suggested Gary was stealing to feed her drug habit. Sage’s real name is Sandra Micheals. Her NA sponsor remembers her. She passed on her information to Imani who pretended to be an addict. Imani has secrets. Voights has secrets.

Still, Voight had to ask why she was so comfortable at the NA meeting. She confessed she’s been to a few looking for her sister. She also didn’t use that opportunity to question him about the photos and so he’s welcome. Not that Voight would have told her anyways.

He had Platt looking into it for him off the books. He was there when they later found Sage’s apartment. She had enough drugs on her to qualify for felony weight. She didn’t know what Gary was doing. Gary abuses her too. His father was wrong about him being an upstanding guy when he’s away from Sage.

Gary stays with Sage because he knows he can always abuse her. She has to take him back. He pays for her addiction. Gary was volatile. He wasn’t stealing to feed her habit because she had enough drugs to last her for a while. So, what started all of this? Did Gary just do it to hurt people? Did he tried to pull what he did with his victims what he did with Sage? Apologize and they’ll forgive you. He later attacked a cop. Voight pursued him. He attacked Voight and separated him from his gun. And then he stabbed himself through the eye.

Gary killed himself because he thought he was turning in the same monster as his dad. His dad was abusive. He pushed Gary into a psychotic break. Gary was exhibiting the same violent tendencies as his old man and that’s why he was always apologetic afterwards. He finally saw killing himself was the only way to stop the abuse. And now the granddaughter had no one to advocate for her.

Voight asked for DCFS to investigate, but that was it and Imani eventually realized the abused boy in the photo was Voight himself as a child.

THE END!
