Vaness Van Dyke was found drowned in her bathtub. It was murder. Her killer snuck up behind her and forced her under the water until she drowned. The cops checked surveillance cameras. The cameras showed that a stranger was parked in front of her home in the hours leading up to her death. The car was registered in a different state. The killer might have returned to the state after the murder. The feds were brought in because they were the ones that handled a multi-state investigation and so this case was given to Remy ‘s team. The feds wanted the best on this one. It also didn’t hurt that the victim came from old money. And rich people get more justice than the poor.
The killer managed to get into the house. Only they didn’t rob the place. They could have easily stolen thousands. They didn’t because their sole focus was killing Vanessa and so Remy wondered if this was personal. He asked Vanessa’s widow if she had any enemies. She unfortunately had many enemies. This included most of the staff. Vanessa’s staff hated her. They couldn’t wait to talk about her tonight. They mentioned that Vaness would come down with these “migraines”. She’d demand that everyone leave while she recuperated and really that was an excuse.
Vanessa was doings things she wasn’t supposed to when everyone was out. Most of them figured that out. They had to leave for the majority of the day and they were only allowed back whenever Vanessa suddenly recovered. This also went for her only son. George was still little. He was raised primarily by the nanny because Vanessa just didn’t have the energy to “deal” with him. On the day she died, she had the nanny take George for the day to their country club. She claimed she came down with a migraine and the truth is she was carrying out a kink.
Vanessa was interested in erotic asphyxiation. She was interested in that stuff because she had nearly drowned as a child. She was saved by her father who sacrificed his life for hers. Vanessa has struggled with that guilt ever since. Her husband said their relationship started out fine. It wasn’t until they were married that Vanessa started demanding rougher and rougher sex. She wanted to be choked. The feds found her on an app for that and she let the killer in. She gave him the security code.
They also used that app to figure out that her killer targeted her. He joined the app a week prior. He looked for women with that kink in that neighborhood and was quickly matched with Vanessa. Or so the feds thought at first. They thought it was odd that Vanessa wouldn’t have a safe word. The people with that kind of kink usually comes up with a safe word to keep them safe. It lets their partner know when enough is enough and that no one gets harmed accidentally. Vanessa messages claimed she wanted to be chocked. And that she should be ignored if she asks him to stop.
People with that kink know better. Erotic asphyxiation also known as EA was built on trust. Remy reached out an expert on it and there was no reason for Vanessa to trust a complete stranger without limits. It turns out Vanessa’s husband was lying about everything. Jay Bradford never asked his wife to change her name because she’s rich. She’s old money. The properties were all in her name. They probably had an airtight prenup as well. She found out that her husband was cheating on her and she wanted evidence before she divorced him.
Jay wouldn’t have gotten a dime. No, the only way he’d get money was if he killed her. He’d get everything and he could start over with his new girlfriend. The girlfriend happened to be the young nanny named Amelia. Amelia was in the country on a visa. She could have gotten deported if she got fired and Vanessa would have definitely fired her if she found out Amelia was her husband’s mistress. Jay therefore had nothing to lose by taking out Vanessa. It’s not like their kid was going to miss her because again she didn’t raise him. Amelia did.
Jay came up with a plan. It involved a young man by the name of Kevin Mulvaney. He was the guy that was interested in Amelia. He thought he was protecting her because of a one time mistake. He killed Vanessa and he signed a suicide note that was supposed to be Amelia and Jay’s insurance if he ever tried to double cross them. Or at least that’s what they told him it was for. They killed him literally after he signed it and they would have gotten away with it if Vanessa hadn’t hired a private investigator.
The private investigator had planted cameras in Jay’s office. The cameras showed that Jay and Amelia killed Kevin. It also would have explained why. The private investigator realized he was sitting on a goldmine. He tried to blackmail Jay. Jay killed him, but the private investigator had already talked to the feds. He told them that Vanessa suspected Jay was cheating on her. He told them that the video from the cameras were on his account. Jay killing him wasn’t going to stop the feds from learning the full truth and so he ran.
Jay took Amelia and George to the docks. The feds were closing in. Jay almost abandoned George at one point and it was Amelia that made Jay go back for the boy. Jay doesn’t love that kid. He went back for him to use him as a human shield. His lawyer was so worried about George that she told the feds about Jay’s past. Jay was married once before. He married a bartender and they had a son. Their son’s name is Leo. When Leo was five, Jay walked out. He completely abandoned the family. He got a divorce and went racing boats in San Diego. He claimed to have changed when he met Vanessa.
Its why she took a chance on him. Then they had a son of their own. Both parents saw George as a possession and not as their child. Vanessa wanted to continue her family line. Jay wanted a chance at getting Vanessa’s money. Her fortune all goes to her son. The marriage would have worked if Jay hadnt gotten bored again. He cheated with Amelia when George was about five. He also didn’t even wait until Vanessa’s body was cold when he started moving around assets. He opened a bank account in the Bahamas in his name.
He moved Vanessa’s money there. He didn’t need George anymore and the fact he was so ready to abandoned him had everyone worried. It even worried Amelia. She genuinely cares about George. She thought they were killing Vanessa so that they could be a family. She didn’t realize that Jay was always looking for the next best thing. He was never going to settle for one person or suddenly turn into dad of the year. The boat they escaped on took them to Connecticut. They were about to steal a new boat to take them to the Bahamas when the feds caught up to them.
They told Amelia about Leo. They mentioned that Jay had already abandoned one son and Amelia knew they were telling the truth. She realized it in the ease in which Jay was willing to abandon George. Amelia could have helped him escape and instead she let the feds arrest them. She turned herself in. She wanted to protect George. Speaking of which, George needed a guardian. George’s only family was his mother’s cousin. She was so self-obsessed that the family’s lawyer didn’t think she’d agree to take a five year old child in, but the lawyer does care for George. She was one of the few people that loved him. And the feds were willing to put in a good word with family services so that George got to live with the last person he had left.
Sheryl Barnes had told Hana about interviewing for a new job, but now that she’s been told the job is hers if she wants it, she doesn’t know if she’s ready to leave her team.
