In tonight’s Fire Country episode, Walter Leone was back in town. He came for Bode’s graduation. Only he missed it by a week. Walter seemed very confused about the dates and his daughter-in-law was worried that there might be a cognitive issue.
Sharon thought they should get Walter tested. Her husband disagreed with her. Vince thought it was just as slip up. Leone men haven’t always been great with sobriety. He thought Walter might have gotten drunk and forgotten what week it was. Vince was used to that kind of thing growing up.
The whole family have made peace with Walter’s drinking. Vince was at peace with it. Bode tried to downplay it. Luke just thought everyone was exaggerating about his dad. They all failed to notice that Walter’s drinking was issue on top of his cognitive problem.
The man was barely in town when he suddenly parked himself at the bar that Sharon bought and was telling everyone some stories. The stories were exaggerated of course. Walter just likes telling them because it reminded him of a happier time.
The Leone men used to go fishing all the time. Then Bode left town. Vince and Luke lost interest. Walter couldn’t maintain the tradition by himself and he was still a little bit sad about that. Bode could see that for himself when he talked to his grandfather.
He thought maybe he could bring his grandfather out of his funk if they just went fishing again. Bode called his dad. He called his uncle. He even roped in Jake. They all agreed to go fishing with Walter again and the only one that was worried that might not be a good idea was Sharon.
Sharon would rather the men in her family to deal with a problem head on than hide. She didn’t want them hiding in the bottom of a bottle or taking a possible confused elderly man out into the woods.
Sharon tried to talk them out of the fishing trip. She was ignored by pretty much everyone. They went fishing and a lot of stuff from the past came up. Jake checked himself out of that conversation early on. He left the Leone men to it. They went on to argue about what to do with Walter. Walter needed someone to check up on him.
Luke lives near his father. He’s the one that usually checks in on him. Make sure his dad was taking his meds and showers. It’s all been on Luke. He’s tired of it. He wanted to accept a job elsewhere. He wanted to further his career. He wanted to possibly meet someone and so he told Vince that he has to step up with their dad.
Which Vince didn’t want. Vince didn’t want it all to fall on him. He’s always pushed their dad onto his brother. Luke doesn’t remember Walter at his worst. Vince did. Vince protected his brother when they were young and a part of him felt Walter was Luke’s responsibility now.
Vince’s excuse for why he couldn’t care for his dad was at first his marriage. Followed by his kids. His career with running his own battalion. It doesn’t matter that he’s slowed down at work or that his only surviving child was now a functioning adult. Vince doesn’t want to take responsibility for his dad.
He may love Walter, but he doesn’t like him as a person. He also should have listened to his wife. His dad wasn’t the same. Walter began wandering off into the woods at night and he was lucky that Bode followed him.
Walter could have hurt himself. Tonight, he got lucky. He stumbled across a man trapped in his car. He had Bode go back for the other guys to help and the others were told that Walter followed the noise to the car.
Bode left out that Walter was wandering on his own when he just happened to find the car. Either way, someone got critical care. The man trapped in his car has been there for four to five possible days. He’s lived on rainwater and ketchup packets. He got very lucky that someone found him.
The men all worked together to keep that man alive. Luke and Jake tried to call for backup. They were by themselves and so Jake asked for advice. He needs some fatherly advice. He couldn’t go to Vince about it.
It was about Bode and that’s why Jake told Luke. He told Luke that he slept with Gabriela. He broke the bro code. Some forget that Bode technically broke that code first. Gabriela was first with Jake and then they broke up. She then got together with Bode. She and Bode broke up. And so she went back to Jake for a one night stand.
The whole thing is messy. Luke advised Jake to just come clean. Jake was more than a friend. He was family by this point and, while Bode may get angry, he has more pressing concerns.
The men were trying to save someone when Sharon received a happy surprise. Sharon was at the station when someone abandoned their baby. The baby’s name is Calvin. His name was on his blanket. The station was a safe designation. It’s where babies can be dropped off and not face any repercussions. Calvin’s mother dropped him there because of that law.
Sharon took care of the baby with Audrey and Gabriela. Gabriela was still suspended only she heard about the abandoned baby and wanted to help. They had to call DCFS. The baby was going to place in an emergency foster home for a while. Although there’s some good news. Calvin’s mother came back for him.
Her name is Brenda. She’s been struggling with postpartum depression. She thought her baby deserved better than her. She was also doing this on her own and has no support system to help her through her struggle.
Sharon was kind to Brenda. She talked her though the steps she needed to take to reclaim her baby. She also advised both Gabriela and Audrey that maybe they needed to talk to someone about their own mothers.
Back out into the woods, Bode had to constantly remind his grandfather what they were doing. He didn’t know where he was. He forgot several times about saving that man. They did save him but Bode knew now that Walter needs serious help. Luke couldn’t do it on his own anymore.
Bode and Jake also talked. He found out about the one night stand. He admitted it felt weird only he didn’t mind. Jake was his brother. He will always be his brother. Bode’s chief concern right now wasn’t Gabriela. It was Walter. He went to his mother and he told her she was right about Walter. The two of them joined up to talk to Walter.
They got him to agree to get tested. The only thing Walter wanted in exchange was for them not to tell his sons about it. He didn’t want to be a burden on them. Bode who has been a family burden himself had known what that feels like. And he was willing to protect his grandfather’s pride.
And Three Rock had an issue with “pruno”. It’s prison wine made in a toilet. Some guy brewed the stuff for himself. Eve found the bottle and she tried to get Manny to tell her who made it.
Manny refused to narc. He would rather get sent back to prison than turn on one of his own. His compassion and loyalty was eventually rewarded when the guilty party came clean. And it didn’t end there because Manny also apologized to Luke for hitting him. He was out of line and he’s willing to admit that.
THE END!
