Bode was off parole. Jake was in a good place with his girlfriend. Eve was preparing to meet the social worker because Francine was becoming a foster mother. They were each in good places. Naturally, the world felt they had been happy for far too long. Jake’s girlfriend began digging into his half-brother. The one he recently learned about and who he’s never met. His brother’s name is Malcom. Malcom’s girlfriend’s name is Amber. He played soccer in high school and got scholarships that he turned down because his heart was set on becoming a firefighter.
Yes, he was a firefighter too. Violet found out about it. She told Jake. She also handed him Malcom’s phone number because she thought the two guys would get along very well. Mind you Jake hadn’t been sure if he wanted to contact Malcom. He was scared about it. He knows his details now. He began to cyberstalk him to see what Malcolm was like and Eve grabbed his phone. She wanted to know why he was interested in Drake county. Jake had to promise he wasn’t jumping ship before Eve followed his brother’s account with his profile.
The half-brothers share the same last name. Now, Malcom will know Jake followed the account. It was going to be so weird if he does go ahead with contacting him. Then the hits kept coming. Bode’s grandmother was back in town. Oma Ruby was what he called her. They hugged. Ruby apologized for missing the funeral and the other thing she did. She extorted money out of his father. She was a better grandmother than she was a mother. There’s no better example than when she blamed Sharon for Rylie dying.
She said that vile thing at Rylie’s funeral. Vince had had enough of her by then. He paid her to stay away from the family. He couldn’t keep letting her hurt his wife and so he paid her with money he didn’t have just to make sure she stayed away. In all, he paid her twenty-six grand. She took it and she even demanded he’d keep paying her when it looked like he stopped. Ruby was vicious. Sharon grew up with an erratic mother that she couldn’t wait to escape and so she told her mom’s voicemail that Vince died. The money stops. And please keep staying away.
Ruby ignored the parts that weren’t convenient to her. She showed up a week after the voicemail. She was still overbearing and her apologizing now doesn’t make up for taking the money in the first place. Ruby wrote a check to repay what Vince paid her. The only thing Sharon wanted to know after that was if the check was going to clear. She never knew with her mom. The finances were all over the place. Things changed after her mom got with her stepdad because he was an illegal weed grower. He was also the better parent in spite of his crimes and arrests.
Ruby can convince Bode that she felt sorry with a some story about Sharon as a kid. She just didn’t tell the full truth. She didn’t mention that Sharon made the shamrock as a good luck charm for her mom’s date. Ruby wasn’t entirely sure about the guy back then. She still left an eight year old home alone. She wasn’t not a good mother. Sharon was a much better mom to her own kids. Still, Ruby felt the need to judge her. Sharon tried to get sympathy from Manny and he couldn’t give it because he just got back from Sacramento.
The State of California experienced its worst fire season last year. They were about to get one ten times worse this year because of the effects of climate change. Manny said its best. It’s war. They were going to need as many bodies as possible. Now, would be the perfect time to get Three Rock back up and running. It pushed Eve to make a choice. She had to decide between her job or to meet with the social worker. She soon decided that she really didn’t want to be a mom right now. Or possibly in five years. She loves her job. It was her calling and they needed her to pull off her magic.
Eve broke up with Francine. She knew it wasn’t fair to Francine, but she couldn’t afford to keep lying to either of them anymore. She wasn’t ready to become a parent. She might never be ready. It was better to call it now before a child entered the picture. Eve went back to work. She got Three Rock up and running within the next two weeks. They were going to be accepting young offenders. Those between eighteen and twenty-five. It meant they’d get the bodies before the next fires moved in. And Jake left a voicemail for his brother.
He told him that they shared a dad. something that Malcom didn’t know about. He got angry with his mom and he fought with his half-sister from her side because no one told him about his father or the fact he has a half-brother. His sister was so upset that she went to Jake’s firehouse. She yelled at him. She told him to stay away from Malcom because he was her brother. And not his.
Bode ended up helping a teenager looking to run away and he was going to mentor the kid so that he didn’t end up like him as a young offender, but his mom took his advice. Sharon agreed to accept Ruby’s apology. It might be the biggest mistake she’s ever made or help heal old wounds. Who knows!
