In tonight’s Law & Order episode, It was the first homicide for Detective Theo Walker. He and Detective Riley were investigated the murder of a kid. The teenager’s name was Omari Kemp. He played basketball for his high school. He was quite good at it and had a bright future waiting for him.

He also seemed like a nice kid. He saw a street musician get his cup knocked over. He ran over to help. He didn’t steal anything. He even dropped a hundred dollar bill into the cup. He was good to that man and so the man saw him get hurt and he didn’t look away. He called 911. He never got a look at the killer, but he did everything he could for Omari.

Omari wasn’t found with ID. He did have a wallet with plenty of money in it. He also had jewelry on. This wasn’t a robbery and the cops only got his name because his prints were in the system. Omari was a ward of the state for a time. His mother died in childbirth.

His father died in a car accident three years ago. He didn’t have any other family so he entered foster care and he was quickly taken in as well as adopted by the Picketts. James and Katherine Pickett seemed like good people. They met Omari because he was on the same basketball team as their son Tyler.

Omari was a good kid. Everyone agreed to that point. He was destined for the NBA and already had a few sports deals. His adoptive parents have been helping him with the money. James also admitted that he got into a fight with Omari that morning.

He felt that Omari’s head hasn’t been in the game lately. He took him to task and Omari got so upset that he ran out. The doorman agreed that the kid was upset. Omari would normally chat with the guy. He didn’t do that this time so the doorman knew he was still calming down.

One other thing that the doorman mentioned was that Omari got into a fight with someone. It was a few days before his death. He got into an argument with his coach. The coach was in it for himself. He wanted Omari to go to a certain college in order to get a finder’s fee and someone warned Omari about it.

Omari hated manipulation. He just wanted to be a kid. His coach didn’t kill him. The investigation actually led away from the coach. Omari had some trouble at school. His locker was defaced by his foster brother, Tyler.

Tyler said they used to hang out. They were best buds. Lately, Omari has been hanging out with a different set. The cops looked into it and they found out Omari had a girlfriend back in his old neighborhood. It’s why he was there when he died. They were supposed to meet up.

She had been mad at him for the things he posted on social media. He had a finsta. The girlfriend was in the clear because she was at dance practice that ran over, but the finsta indicated that the teenage boy was hanging out with a rapper named Creston Reeves aka Hollow Point.

The rapper was even getting him into the clubs. Omari posted photos of it. He included drinks and women. Something that were always around rappers though shouldn’t be around underage boys. Hollow Point messaged Omari something about money and that led to questions.

The cops simply had questions and Hollow Point’s security team nearly made it into a shooting. Walker kept the peace. He later said men like that spend their whole lives trying to be tough. Riley just couldn’t act like he didn’t matter.

Riley was so focused on questioning Hollow Point that he failed to see what Walker did. Now, he knows. He also got a chance to talk to the rapper and the guy said he saw Omari’s potential. He wanted to get him a new sports agent. Hollow Point was going to sign him to his own agency.

This would have put his previous agent out into the cold and that agent was in fact his adoptive father. James Pickett claimed he was at home all day. They found footage of him leaving the building via the garage in his car.

He lied. He lied about everything. They didn’t fight about Omari’s game. They fought because James didn’t want to lose out on the money and then he pursued Omari.

They got into an argument. James killed Omari. His wife lied for him by trying to protect him and so she later told cops that her husband admitted to her that he killed Omari in a fit of anger. Her exact words. Only James continued to lie. He went to trial for the murder of his adopted son and he tried to claim self-defense. He was using the fact that the kid was black and in shape against him.

Nevermind that the witness saw Omari walking away from James or that he had his hands up. James’s legal team were claiming that the witness was lying because they were both black. Also, because Omari put a hundred dollars into his cup and he felt grateful.

It was James playing into every stereotype he could. His lawyer also quashed the comments he made to his wife because of spousal privilege. They claimed that Omari had a violent temper and that the whole family was terrified of him.

Omari was fifteen. He was kind to strangers. He wanted to play basketball forever. He didn’t like being manipulated or used and that’s what James was doing to him. He only adopted him because he thought a massive pay day was in his future.

It’s why he made sure he was in charge of the money. James even said in court that Omari had attacked him two weeks before the incident. There was no evidence of it because James claimed he kept the incident to himself to protect Omari’s bright future.

Omari did get into fights. He was a big dude and he lost his temper once at school. Walker buried evidence of that so that James was found guilty and he was, but Riley found out what he did. He warned him that he doesn’t do the lone wolf crap. He either be straight with him or find a new partner.

THE END!
