Maurice Benard: Nothing General About It, The Book

Maurice Benard wrote his book, Nothing General About It: How Love (and Lithium) Saved Me On and Off General Hospital. The GH actor, who portrays the crime boss, Sonny Corinthos, published his book in hardback in April 2020. Is it worth a read and still relevant today? Read on to find out.

What is The Book About?

If you watch the ABC daytime drama show, GH, you will probably know that Maurice also has a podcast called State of Mind. There, he often discusses mental health with his guests.

His book also discusses mental health, and it’s a good read if you or someone you know struggles with anxiety, depression, or bipolar disorder. The actor has been on the daytime drama show for over 30 years now, and the book takes fans through the first 25 years of his life.

Regarding whether it’s worth a read, that’s really a matter of personal preference. However, if you are a fan of Maurice Benard on the ABC show or are interested in personal stories dealing with mental health, then it seems like it would be a worthwhile read for you. At 256 pages, it’s not a massive tome to read, and it is also available in Kindle, audio, and softback formats.

The Meat Of The Matter

Essentially, the story is about mental health and the various episodes that he experiences. He takes the reader back to his childhood, which wasn’t always comfortable, especially with his dad.

He walks fans through his struggles with mental health, fights with friends, and difficult times that his now-wife, Paula, had to deal with. However, he eventually got some help, and that made him a nicer person to be around.

Desperate to become a successful actor, Maurice Benard managed to achieve that. Watching the daytime drama probably helps if you love the parts about his acting career. Meet some of the people he worked with, and you can enjoy that.

Like Sonny, Maurice Benard’s mental health impacts his daily life. The story also explains that growing up in a toxic masculine environment meant he had to unlearn all of that to become the loved person he is today.

Other Reviews

Ranking inside the top 100 for TV biographies, it also does quite well in Amazon’s books about bipolar disorder. While the writer enjoyed the read and found it offered some valuable insights into mental health issues, there are other good reviews.

For example, Dr. Drew Pinsky wrote, “This is a heartfelt, inspiring, and brutally honest look in the mirror chronicling his experience with mental illness, finally finding the right diagnosis, and learning how to live with it.”

Mehmet Oz, M.D., the Emmy Award–winning host of The Dr. Oz Show, opined, “This shocking true story is General Hospital on anabolic steroids.”

Other readers describe it as “interesting,” “honest,” and in places, it might move the readers to tears. Is it still relevant five years after publication?  Absolutely! Mental health issues are current, and awareness is growing. Plus, the ABC show still airs after all these years.
