In tonight’s NCIS: Origins episode, Cliff Wheeler couldn’t be suspended forever. Regional Director Barrett ended up demoting him back to field agent. Wheeler was back in the field and he was serving under Franks. Which was awkward because he was not a great replacement for Lala. He was rusty. The team had also lost Randy. Randy was riding a desk and Wheeler was messing up in the field. They’ve raided the same drug den five times in two months. Wheeler kept letting them get away to crawl right back to the roach house when the heat died down.
Franks couldn’t take it anymore. He complained to Barrett. He demanded to replace Randy with Wheeler. The probie agreed with him. Even Wheeler agreed with him. Wheeler wanted out of the field. He learned his lesson and he wanted to return back to his desk. The same desk that Barrett was riding because he liked looking at Mary Jo’s butt everyday. The poor woman thought he was a sleaze. She couldn’t wait until he was gone. She couldn’t wait until Lala was back. Lala survived her car accident.
Lala suffered severe injuries. She was ordered to do rehab for months. She’s now officially using the neighbor’s pool. She got around to asking for their permission. She was using it before and they never knew it. She was also pushing herself to the limit to get back into the field. She was ready to return to work tonight. She came just in time. Gibbs has been keeping himself busy since she’s been gone. He was dating Diane (his future ex-wife). He’s been throwing himself into work when he wasn’t seeing her. And he picked up a case.
It’s been slow at the office. Besides the roach house as they dubbed it. Mary Jo took pity on him and gave him the case of the missing Marine. PFC Thomas Meyers was nineteen. He was one day in on a week’s leave. He was supposed to have dinner with his mother and he never showed. She said that wasn’t like him. He would never not show. He would have called if something came up. He wasn’t the best in proficiency. Yet, his conduct was always deemed high. He still calls his ex-girlfriend’s grandfather to check up on him. This guy wouldn’t disappear into thin air.
Gibbs felt that way about the case. His gut told him that something happened to the young marine. He looked into it and Thomas told his friend that he was going to the Range. Gibbs thought it was a firing range. He checked all of them. He was telling Franks and Wheeler about it back at the office when Randy overheard them. He said he heard the Range come up in one of the files. He was loading the files all to the computer while he’s been stuck to the desk. He heard about the Range. He looked it up and it was reportedly a place where people hunt down people for fun.
Randy dropped that bomb on pretty much everyone. He was so busy listening to Marky Mark that he forgot how to ease into difficult topics. Now, they knew the Range was a dangerous place. Franks took Wheeler and Gibbs over there. They met the leader. His name is Abe Pruitt. He owns the compound. He was very much a hippie. He allows everyone to come to the compound and start over. They were also very mistrustful of outsiders. They wouldn’t allow NIS onto their property. They claimed they never met Thomas.
Gibbs overheard something from the nearby woods. He followed the sound until he found Thomas’s body. He had been killed. Suspicion fell on the compound. They had to go in there and they couldn’t rely on Wheeler. Lala showing up ready to work came at the right time. She was perfect for the job. Not that Gibbs thought so. Gibbs didn’t think Lala was ready to return to work. He constantly tried to get her a chair or tell her to relax. She refused them each time. She also congratulated him on Diane. She heard about Gibbs dating from Rando.
Things were pretty tense between the two. Gibbs visited her at the hospital following the car accident. He didn’t visit her any other time after that. He instead threw himself into a relationship he knew wasn’t going to work and he did that to put some distance between him and Lala. He has feelings for Lala. She could break his heart. She almost did when she died. Gibbs couldn’t lose another person he loved so he created walls between them. They’re back to just working together or trying to.
Thomas was out in the woods not because of the Range. It really was a hippie commune. Thomas was out there because his Corporal was hazing him. He threw a tack. He demanded that Thomas find it if he wants a ride back to barracks. Thomas did find it. He went to a nearby cabin to call his corporal. The corporal thought he was lying because the only reason he was hazing him was the fact he was low on his proficiency. He ran into issues at the cabin. He ran into Lee Fabian. The cabin belonged to Fabian’s grandmother and Fabian was there when Thomas stopped by to make the call.
Fabian saw that Thomas was wearing a pair of great sneakers. He killed him to steal those sneakers. He ran when Lala and Gibbs almost arrested him. Gibbs stopped Lala from pursuing him in fear of her getting caught in the snares. She lashed out. He lashed out. He couldn’t lose her and she finally accepted that. Only she didn’t need him to hold her hand on a job that was quick to discount her. She was already dealing with enough as it is. And she got to see that Gibbs was getting better as a probie because he talked the compound into helping them capture and arrest Fabian.
Randy and Wheeler also compiled a research to show that since Barrett took over – their stats have gone down. It was enough to convince him to hand back the job to Wheeler. Randy was back in the field. The team was together again and they finally put an end to that drug den.
THE END!
