Mason Franks was in town. He needed help. It’s the only reason he’d put aside his pride. Mason took out a loan from some very dangerous people and he had no way of paying them back. They beat him up when he couldn’t pay. He was about to lose the family farm. He was desperate when he went to his kid brother, but Franks never gave Mason time to talk. He got mad at their Uncle Sal for giving out his address. He asked his brother where he was staying. He didn’t want to talk about Vietnam because he was using back then and he felt like his brother still saw him as a bum.
Franks said all of that without giving his brother the opportunity to respond. Or tell the truth. Franks knew it must be important for his brother to be there so he let his brother stay with him. He got a call about a Navy bank getting robbed and so they didn’t have that tough conversation. Franks picked up Lala. They were heading to the location when Gibbs radio the getaway’s vehicles make, model, and the first three digits on the license plate. Lala was the first to realize that the same vehicle was passing them by.
Lala pointed it out to Franks. Franks locked eyes with the driver through two windshields. He also had pink spray paint covering his eyes. The men robbed the bank wearing ski masks only they didn’t count on the dye bags. One of them went off. They got angry at the teller. They were hitting with the butt of their gun when a marine saw them. He got at them. It forced them to run off. He winged a guy. The two men were on the run injured and unable to properly see. Only they managed to get away with the money in spite of Franks pursuing them in a car chase.
Franks was catching up to them when he was forced into an abrupt stop because of Lala. She had a panic attack. The car chase was reminding her of her car accident and Franks was more concerned about her than he was about catching the men. The bank teller that the men injured was the wife of a marine herself. Her name is Alana Clark. She suffered a brain bleed. She was in a coma and everyone was cracking jokes about Franks losing his first car chase. They didn’t know about the Lala angle. Franks covered for her.
Franks later went home to his brother. They finally got a chance to talk with Franks willing to listen. Their mother had sold the family ranch while they were away in Vietnam. She had a handshake deal with old man Henderson. He owned the property while she was allowed to stay in the house in order to work it. The plan was for Mason to earn enough money to buy it back. It just never happened. Now, their mother and the man she made a deal with are both dead. Henderson’s sons didn’t want to respect the handshake.
Not when they want to sell the land to a property developer. They were pushing Mason out. Mason needed some way to get around the deal to make an offer. He came to Franks because he thought he might know some lawyers or people good with real estate. He doesn’t, but Gibbs does. Gibbs called Diane. She agreed to help Mason. She was moving away from real estate into accounting so she was the perfect person to make sense of the books. Franks knew none of this. He started using drugs in Vietnam just to cope.
He came back stateside still using. His brother tried to get him clean. Nothing worked so Mason kicked him out. He couldn’t keep letting his little brother disappoint their mother. They all suspected they had to watch Franks soon kill himself with that stuff. They had to kick him out. Franks eventually got clean thanks to Tish and now he was in a position to help. He got Diane to help his brother. He also found himself stuck in his house because one of the robbers called him at home.
He asked Franks if he recognized him. Franks didn’t. They locked eyes and Franks still couldn’t place him. His sketch of the guy looked horrible. When the guy asked if he knew who he was now, Franks said “yeah, the guy that robs banks”. The thief hung up. Franks informed his office about the phone call. NIS was working a joint task force with the FBI. Their profilers believed that they must have meant at least once. This guy also claimed he wasn’t done with hurting people. Franks was stuck in the house now wait for the man to call again.
In the meantime, they found the other man. They were two of them and the one that got shot died from his injuries. His partner had abandoned him in the car. He was feeling bad about what he did and that’s why he kept calling Franks. Franks wasn’t really in the mood with his brother in his house. He blamed his brother for never getting the chance to say goodbye to their mom. He didn’t know she was sick. He felt that knowing that would have gotten him clean earlier and he could have said goodbye to her.
Mason finally told him tonight that their mom was already sick when he kicked him out. She was sick and Franks was too doped up to notice. That’s why Mason kicked him out in the first place. He wanted their mom’s final moments to be peaceful. Franks was in that mindset when talking to their thief. The thief was going all about signs. About seeing Franks must have been a sign. Franks has seen him before and Vera helped him remember (after the trace did no good). It was Corporal Wade from the Meyers case.
They found Wade at his home and arrested him. He spiraled after the other case. It’s why he robbed the bank. He thought he was just good at hurting people. The case was closed. They got justice for the victim. They even got the money back. Franks got to go home to his brother. Mason finally got to tell him that he was proud of the man that Franks became and their mom would have been proud too. Franks also helped Mason start over. He introduced him to the Range where he gets a fresh start growing plants. And might one day start over.
Franks was going to pack up the old house.
Lala finally met Diane and she told Gibbs to stop being weird about it.
And Mary Jo learned Wheeler’s big secret. The man was either bisexual or he married his wife to hide the fact that he was gay. Neither would do good for his career. It could be why he broke up with his FBI buddy.
