Delilah was in trouble. It’s one thing when she crashed her grandad’s car. She was now getting drunk at parties and that was unacceptable. Her boyfriend looked out for her. He made sure she was safe. Only he might not always be there to do so. Dee has to start thinking about her future. She got drunk because she heard back from one college she applied to. They turned her down. They did it because she got arrested by police and they weren’t as forgiving about that as they used to be. The college protests across the country have brought out some ugliness from both sides. And Dee was worried about rejections from all the other colleges she applied to.
She was dealing with some anxiety. It was becoming concerning now because her mother has sensed an escalation. She wasn’t mad about the drinking. She did that too as a kid. She was concerned that Dee was spiraling out of control. She wanted her daughter to speak to someone if it couldn’t be to her. Robyn wanted to get a handle on this before it escalated even further. She missed the warning signs with Mel and Mel still wasn’t okay. Not that she wasn’t trying. Mel was going to therapy.
Mel thought she was doing better until there was an argument about a parking spot. It was public parking on the street. Mel got there first and that was a problem for some entitled douche. He said that was “his” spot. He allegedly parked there everyday because he works nearby. He also had a meeting that he kept mentioning as he got out of the car and into Mel’s face. He was yelling at her to the point he triggered her PTSD. She drew her gun on him. He didn’t touch her or threatened to. He just got in her face.
The guy ran back to his car once the gun came out. He drove off. Mel then freaked out about her overreaction. She called her therapist for an emergency session. It was the right thing to do and she got lucky that her doctor could fit her in. Where she messed up was that she didn’t tell anyone else in her life what happened. She didn’t tell her husband. She didn’t tell her best friend. She was embarrassed by what happened. She admitted as much to her therapist. She was ashamed about having PTSD.
Her therapist ultimately convinced her to come clean to her husband. She talked Mel into telling Harry about her incident. Mel to her credit tried to do so and unfortunately that’s when Aunt Vi came in. Vi had needed help. She has a best friend named Evelyn. Evelyn was rushing into a relationship with this supposedly rich guy named Nigel. Vi met him and she had some concerns. She asked him a few questions. Ones he artfully dodged. Evelyn got mad at Vi for questioning Nigel only Vi didn’t want her friend getting in over her head. Or going on a trip to Paris with a man she just met.
Vi was concerned. She had a very good reason to be. She asked Harry and Mel to check Nigel out. On the surface, he seemed like an educated guy with a healthy bank account. They needed more time to check for things that weren’t on the surface. Vi had hoped she had been wrong after the early assessment and she wasn’t. It turns out Evelyn wasn’t the only woman Nigel was promising to take to Paris. He was making that promise to other women as well. He was a con artist. He finds women that are freshly retired and he pretends to date them.
Until he tells them about this sure thing that he was investing in. The women never saw the con coming. Why would they when he never let them buy anything when they were together. He drove an expensive car. He claimed to be living in a hotel while his townhouse was being renovated. They had no reason to doubt him or that he wasn’t really rich. They invested in his sure thing. He always made sure they made the check out to him and that they wrote “gift” under purpose. He claimed it was a way to get around paying taxes on it when really it makes the money an actual gift and then he ghosts them.
Nigel moves on to a fresh victim the moment he gets the money. He has several aliases. He was on several dating apps and each of them had a different name. Harry found out about this. He warned Vi. She tried to warn Evelyn, but it was too late. She had already given Nigel two-hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Evelyn contacted her bank. She tried to get her money back. It was no good. The money was deposited in a secret bank account in the Cayman Islands. The place known as the tax haven for the rich.
Nigel had a ticket there. If he gets on the flight, he’ll get access to the money. He will move it to a new account and it’s gone. There was no way of getting it back. Evelyn was so distraught that she took one too may pills. Nearly overdosed. It didn’t happen thankfully because Vi found her in time. She got the pills out of her system. She got her friend to the hospital and Harry and Mel were going after Nigel. Detective Dante couldn’t touch him because what Nigel did wasn’t technically a crime. Or at least not yet. The laws haven’t caught up to technology.
Harry and Mel thought the best way to get the money back was to plant a trojan horse. They had a huge breakup at some upscale bar that Nigel was in. Mel yelled that Harry was getting nothing because they have an airtight prenup. She also added that she couldn’t wait to get the Lamborghini she always wanted. She pretended to be a drunk heiress and Nigel took the bait. He flirted with Mel. He was telling her about the sure thing when she cut her hand. She cut it on a wine glass. It triggered her PSTD and she fled before Harry could hack Nigel’s phone.
Harry didn’t care about that though. He was too busy checking on his wife. Mel was so upset with herself that Nigel got away because of her condition and Harry promised her that they would get Nigel another way. He wasn’t wrong. Detective Dante was willing to break the law on this one. This same thing happened to his friend’s mom. The woman lost her whole savings and she died broke. Which meant this case was personal for the detective. He found Nigel in the airport parking lot. He knocked him out and stole his phone.
Harry was able to hack it. He got Evelyn’s money back. He got justice for her. Only Evelyn was going to need help before she fully recovers from what Nigel did to her. He didn’t just take her money. He made her doubt herself. Dee was doing that too. Especially after tonight. Dee’s three best friends all heard back from Princeton. They got in. Dee suspected she didn’t. She let a rejection from her safety school blind her to the fact that the Ivy Leagues weren’t the be all end all. That was her dad talking. Dee opened up to her mom and Robyn showed her another path.
Robyn was picked up for stealing a car. The judge could have thrown the book at her. He instead made her go into the military and she went on to join the CIA. Without it, she never would have met her ex-husband or have Delilah. Robyn reminded her daughter of that just so that Dee knew that her life didn’t have to be like her friends. It can still be successful no matter what school she got into. Or if she doesn’t get into any school. She can go to community college. She could still get a degree and who knows? There’s always the military.
