On tonight’s American Idol finale, the trio of finalists opened the night with one of Carrie’s songs. They performed “The Champion”. They performed it very well and they each stood out in their own way. They even received a standing ovation from the audience for their hard work. Yet, the competition had to continue. Hannah Harper was up first. She received help from tonight’s mentor, Alicia Keys. She also chose he song “No One” because she felt she could put her own Folk/Bluegrass spin on it. Then the first note out of her mouth was her voice breaking.

Hannah quickly recovered. She dedicated this song to her husband. He’s been holding down the fort with their kids while she’s been on the show and so the emotions were felt. Its never about the start. Its always about the ending. Hannah made up for it because she managed to turn Alicia’s song into her own. It was a skill that not many held. She was followed by Keyla Richardson. Keyla went a different route. She chose the song “Un-Thinkable”. She was ready for her big moment and she succeeded in taking it tonight.

Keyla performed right up her “R&B” alley. Only she sounded like the original artist. She put on a concert with her giving a call and response with the audience. She sounded ready and America was still voting at the time of her performance. Keyla was followed by Jordan McCullough. Jordan’s voice was smooth like butter. He’s also gained a lot in confidence. He chose the song “I Aint Got You”. He didn’t just sing it. He threw in looks. He owned that stage and the judges were so proud of Jordan. Of how far he’s come.

Jordan came alive when he was singing. It was when he wasn’t performing that he became shy again. He turned into a loveable teddy bear. Alicia thought he could win it all. America on the other hand, particularly this season, was looking for the loveable factor. Hannah provided it with her twang, Kelya with her love of life, and Jordan with flawless season. Seriously they were all great. Hannah next performed. She performed an original song. She also began with an original song on this journey.

Hannah’s second song tonight was called “Married Into This Town”. She was a great songwriter. She was old school in that she told a story. With this song, she told a love story about her family. She sang of loving their small town. The same town that welcomed her with open arms when she went back home for a visit. They all returned home tonight. Keyla was a music teacher. Her students all lined up to see her and tell her how proud they were of her. They also wrote inspirational message on the school board for her.

She brought American Idol to Pensacola. It hadn’t been easy. She had to fight for it every step of the way. She thanked her son, her students, and her city for being there for her. Keyla was feeling the love so she dedicated this next one to God. She performed Whitney Houston’s “I Love the Lord”. Its really hard to cover Whitney. She was known as the Voice for a reason yet Keyla made the song her home. She made it feel lived in. Now, Carrie didn’t cry for her like she did with Hannah. She still asked that America agree on a three way tie because she didn’t want anyone to be eliminated.

Jordan was up next. He chose the song “Dear God”. He had a minor hiccup towards the end that he recovered from so fast that most probably didn’t remember it. He was getting emotional. He was thanking God much like Keyla did. His church and his community built him up to withstand the competition. They also made Luke envious because now he has to visit Jordan’s church. He lived twenty minutes away and he promised to stop by one Sunday. Lionel was just so proud of his kids on the show that he pleaded with America to vote.

Alicia Keys then performed with the finalists. It was another song of returning to the church. At the start of the season, the contestants usually sang Country or a Church song. They figured out pretty early on that was the chief way to get noticed and its managed to cross over to the Finale as well. The people that broke that choice was the next big artists to perform. En Vogue came together to perform some two of their biggest songs. They hyped up the audience and they got Carrie on her feet dancing along. They also added a former contestant to perform with.

There was also a special segment on Drew vs. Cary. Drew was Keyla’s nine year old song. He would often sing along with his mother’s performances and it was more than singing in certain cases. He would go all out. He would perform that music. He was matched up against Carrie in performing some of Idol’s best hits. This included Carrie’s most famous song. Yet, Drew kept winning them. There was no defeating the kid energy.

There was a performance from Gin Blossoms. They performed with another former contestant from this season. In this case, it was better that the guys not be named because they kinda dropped the ball on this one. There was a performance from Brad Paisley too. Nelly even hit the stage tonight. He had a Country song if people didn’t know about it before. The poor guy performing with him was so tired. He couldn’t keep a beat. Its what separates those that made it to the finale and those that didn’t.

Motley Crue then performed with Carrie. Carrie had a rocker side to her that a lot don’t remember, but it’s still there. She looked her best dressed as a rocker and that was just a fact. There was some bad news though. Keyla soon learned she was out. She didn’t make it into the top two. This was the end of her journey and really shouldn’t have been. She was a stronger vocalist than people voted for. Maybe she could try “The Voice” next. They would be friendlier to her than the audience tonight. They also wouldn’t accuse her of using her son to win votes.

Social media was writing about tonight’s episode like Keyla was somehow in the wrong. Even as they found no problem with Hannah showing her three sons. They spoke of Hannah’s motherhood like the greatest sacrifice. They spoke of Keyla’s as a need for attention. It was cruel and the show should be pushing back on it. There were more celebrity performances. There was Shinedown and Alicia returned to perform “Fallin”.

Raye joined her mid-performance. Luke also performed. There was a sound from the audience that sounded a little like booing. It was unclear before the show kept pushing ahead and Luke even performed a second song with another finalist that ended in applause. It was quickly followed by Clay Aiken. Clay was blonde now for the people that didn’t know. He makes for a better redhead than blonde. It was his voice that remained unchanged. He in turn was followed by Lee Ann Womack who performed with Hannah.

Hannah sounded much better when she was performing with Lee Ann. It’s like she got over her nerves. Tori Kelley then performed with Jordan. Jordan got that swagger when he was performing with Tori. The two finalists came alive when they were performing with others. It was quite honestly their best performance of the night. Kyndal also returned to perform an original song with her biggest fan.
