In tonight’s Brilliant Minds episode, Dr. Wolf was a patient at an in-treatment psychiatric facility called Hudson Oakes. He was there to get treatment for his wavering mental health. Only he thought he was there for another reason. He thought he was there to save Sofia.

He claimed he faked a psychotic episode to get sent there and that he did so to save Sofia. Wolf was under the impression that Sofia exists.

She was poached by Hudson Oakes from Bronx General. Wolf thought that happened a lot. He thought that the lead psychiatrist was keeping Sofia there by convincing her that she needed extra help. And she doesn’t because she has him.

Wolf told that doctor that he planned on leaving with Sofia soon. Dr. Frederick then told him that if she does her job properly – he’d walk out the door on his own. She was too skilled to bring up Sofia’s nonexistence. She tried to reason with Wolf. She tried to treat him. He thought it was sabotage.

He thought that she convinced people to stay so that she could overcharge them for conditions they don’t suffer from. Frederick didn’t say that Sofia wasn’t real only she did push back to see if Wolf would remember Sofia’s last name.

He didn’t recall it. He couldn’t recall much about Sofia herself. He knew what she’d look like and he had to think about the rest. Wolf was being a nuisance at Hudson Oakes. He rejected therapy. He believed they were all being held there against their will.

One woman had to shut him up by saying Hudson Oakes was giving her a reason to live. She went to a poorer place that discharged her after three days so that they could reclaim the bed. She went home and tried to kill herself. Hudson Oakes wasn’t forcing her to stay or leave. They were giving her a reason to stay alive. They gave her hope.

The therapist leading group therapy tried to help Wolf realize the truth. He told him that he was going to leave the door open to the seclusion room. Its where Sofia was supposedly being held. Wolf thought she was in there because “they” broke into Dr. Frederick’s office to look for Sofia’s file.

Wolff felt he found it. He hid it. He received a visit from one of his interns about his patient, Chef Johnny Tang. He came in not having felt his arm on fire. He also peed himself at the hospital. Wolf told Ericka that technically Johnny was never a patient. His mother was. She died from MS.

There’s a chance Johnny had it too. It could be why he didn’t want to see anyone besides Wolf. The doctors also couldn’t explain that Wolf was in a facility. He tried to get Ericka to help him break out. He told her to leave the car running, but she came by bus.

Wolf ended up looking for Sofia and together they finally acknowledged she wasn’t real. The file he grabbed was his own. They were the same person. Sofia showed up because he thought his father was dead for decades before he learned that he had to leave because of his bipolar disorder.

Sofia finally got Wolf to where he needed to be. He was ready to leave afterwards and there was an issue because he had been wrong about Sofia.

He just hadn’t been wrong about Dr. Fredericks. She doesn’t want to let people leave even once they began feeling better. The woman that took Wolf to task earlier in group therapy was named Ruby. Ruby was ready to leave. Her therapist felt the same way. It was just Dr. Fredericks that was refusing to let anyone to go home. In the meantime, Johnny was still having issues. He lost his taste.

He was a Chef. How could he be a chef that loses his sense of taste? He needed help and he had another accident at his restaurant. He returned to the hospital. They ran all the tests and they couldn’t determine what was wrong with him. So, Ericka took a gamble.

She took Johnny to see Wolf at the hospital. They spoke before Johnny seized in the waiting room. Seeing him for himself had helped Wolf to finally diagnose Johnny. He was suffering from lead poisoning. He cooks all his meals in his mother’s old pot. He did so out of grief and was slowly poisoning himself by trying to hold onto her.

THE END!
