In tonight’s Chicago Fire episode, the warehouse fire was pure chaos. The firefighters had little to no visibility inside there. They were hearing movement that they feared were people still trapped inside, but the building was falling apart around them. They got trapped. There was a firefighter down. There was no telling who it was.

Kidd ordered that the others go inside to help their brethren. It wasn’t revealed at first who fell. They instead fast-forward to three months later. Severide had survived. He was riding his motorcycle. Vasquez survived. He was sleeping with a woman that was neither Violet nor Novak. Kidd was going for a run. Mouch was visiting the hospital.

Cruz’s wife was shown breathing in his shirt. Luckily, it wasn’t because he was gone for good. He was merely at the hospital. Cruz had fallen at the scene and he was rushed to the hospital where it was soon revealed his firefighting career might be over. He suffered injuries to his spine that will affect his mobility for good. He was currently in a wheelchair.

His buddies was retrofitting his house for his newfound mobility issues. The firefighters were also dealing with a media nightmare because a journalist from the Telegraph was sniffing around.

His name is Jacob Morales. He didn’t care that a firefighter was now wheelchair bound after saving five civilians. His angle was the two civilians that died. He thinks the CFD was covering up what happened. Something they could only do if there was wrongdoing. Severide was in charge now. It was his firefighters and Jacob has been harassing him.

It started with calls. It escalated with him going down to the firehouse to claim that Severide should get out ahead of the story. He wanted to know why an official ruling hasn’t been made in the three months since the fire.

Severide tried to tell Jacob to try questioning CFD’s legal channels. Its where public information requests go. By coming down there in person, the only thing he did was tick off Severide.

He doesn’t play those games with journalists. Violet also knew Jacob. She confronted him. She told him that everyone did their best. He said its been three months and the family members still don’t know what caused the fire or if mistakes were made. It’s one thing to wait for the process. It’s another to be asked as they’re stalled until what? They give up?

Jacob still left behind a list of questions for Severide. Kidd looked through it. She thought it best to get out ahead on these things. Only her hands were full. She’s been tapped for a promotional track. She was excited they saw potential in her. She just hated that they were now testing her. They claimed to send her a fresh batch of probies that graduated at the top of their class. She knew after the first day that there were “Bad News Bears”. They were horrible firefighters. They had to work together to get a victim doll out of a fake video and still managed to kill it.

One of the probies even had a chance with Novak before this. His name is Marcus Burke. He was handsome. It wasn’t revealed what went wrong between Novak and Vasquez. They remained friends. It’s not like they hated each other. It was simply a weird vibe between them now. something happened. Violet thought it was Vasquez until he revealed he has nothing to apologize for. The problem might be Novak. Novak developed serious feelings for him last season that told her that she didn’t want things to be only fun between them.

Did Novak change her mind? She did get engaged several times before chickening out? She struggled with commitment so the problem might actually be her. She was still crushing on Marcus at first until the car accident. There was a car accident right outside the firehouse. They went to go check it out. Kidd put two probies in charge of stopping traffic. They were so busy arguing who’d get the traffic cones that a car made it through the scene and swiped Novak. Severide hadn’t been there that day. He did something stupid. He told Cruz about the journalist and he showed him the questions.

The questions were about who accessed the structural integrity of the warehouse. They were asking about a team. It hadn’t been a team. It had been Cruz. He alone assessed it. He became worried afterwards that the deaths will be hung around his neck. It would affect his career as well as his pension if the injury doesn’t heal. He’s a father of two that’s about to become a father of four. Chloe was pregnant with twins. Cruz was despondent so Severide investigated this. He determined that the CFD file that they were indeed sitting on had blamed Cruz. And it was wrong.

The file’s determination contradicts the evidence. Severide asked Chief Pascal to pass on what he uncovered. Pascal had to remind him that he was in power now and that he couldn’t afford to risk his career or that of his firehouse. Severide has to do better. No more going rogue. Herrmann finally stopped by Cruz’s place to break the news that he had been cleared. He had been weary of seeing him because Herrmann felt the accident should’ve happened to him instead. He was older. He was at the end of his career. It should’ve been him, but what Cruz needs is a friend and Herrmann saw that for himself.

Novak and Vasquez are still pretty weird with each other. His animosity with Marcus also increased. The journalist took back his article and made a correction before going out to dinner with Violet. They both had crushes on each other back in high school. So, now’s the time to pursue it.

THE END!
