In tonight’s Chicago Med episode, Dr. Annie Wu found a young boy wandering the streets with a head wound. He wouldn’t say his name. He wouldn’t say where he lived.
He was in danger and so she took him to the hospital. She was in the running for Chief Resident. She was competing against Dr. Frost. Which was why she didn’t loop him in with her patient, but luckily the two were able to put aside their differences to better support the little boy. He eventually revealed his name is Max. Max said his parents were going to be so upset with him for breaking the rules.
Max also added that he always gets in trouble for breaking the rules. Judging by that head wound, the doctors pretty much feared what the trouble would be. They called CPS. They also called in Dr. Charles to talk to Max. The psychiatrist’s conversation made him feel like Max wasn’t being abused.
He injured himself by leaving and running into a scary dog. His parents weren’t responsible for his injuries. Charles was still concerned about one thing that Max kept mentioning. He kept mentioning an angel.
This angel talks to him. She started the conversation. She protects him. She told him that he needed to leave the house before something dangerous happened. Charles didn’t think it was schizophrenia. Max was only seven. He’d been too young for the symptoms to present himself. Also, Max’s parents were eventually found.
They were driving around looking for Max. They seemed like nice people. Wu took her victory lap. Frost took his. They were still competing now that they thought it was safe. And that was a problem because that meant communication between them soon broke down.
The problem occurred when Wu noticed something off about Max’s dad. It was just a moment. It happened because she was closer to the couple though she noticed that Max’s mom appeared afraid of his father. She should’ve said something. She chose to sit on it when Frost asked her what that was look was about.
He hadn’t seen the mother’s fear. Wu sat on the information. She dismissed it and it had consequences. There were three women that came in after a fire. They started the fire because they were being held captive in an underground bunker. Those women were connected to Max.
Max’s father Clark Merritt was their kidnapper. They figured out how to start a fire. They called out to Max to warn him to run before they did so because death for them was better than captivity.
Wu wasn’t the one who made the connection. Sharon was. Sharon was talking Sergeant Platt about the victims. Platt was overseeing the case because she heard about the victims and she thought it was connected to another case of a missing teen girl from her early days on the force. The missing girl was Missy Nelson. Now, none of the women that rescued themselves were Missy. They simply knew about her.
Missy hadn’t followed the rules. Or so they were told. Clark talked about her in a cautionary tale sort of way. Thankfully, once the three women started talking to Plath about the abuse.
Sharon overheard them mention Max and she immediately took the cops to his room. They found Max missing. Frost as well as Wu were made aware of the situation. They all searched the hospital because they couldn’t have gotten far. They found them in the parking lot. The parents took off when they saw the cops. They didn’t care about sticking around for Max.
Wu stayed with the little boy. Frost pursued the parents with the police. Clark got arrested because he took first. His wife Esther then walked into oncoming traffic to kill herself.
They later had to treat her at the hospital. Not that Wu could treat her because going off on a patient was deemed inappropriate. It wasn’t the first time that Dr. Ripley spotted the doctor taking out her anger. He threw out of the treatment room. Frost tried to talk to her afterwards. He asked if she got a read on Clark. She snapped at him and Wu didn’t stop there.
Esther wasn’t Esther. She was Missy Nelson. She was kidnapped nearly thirty years ago. She has Stockholm Syndrome. She fell for her captor because it was the only way to survive.
Only she wasn’t Max’s biological mother. His mother was Joanna. His secret angel. The woman whose been speaking to him through the vent. He was taken away from her when he was a few days old and she snapped after she lost him. She refused to follow Clark’s rules. Clark punished her by drugging her. The same drug that could still kill her because she was going through withdrawal.
It couldn’t be found in tox screens. Missy refused to say what it was to Plath. It was surprisingly Wu who got Missy talking. She was able to bond with Missy over a shared trauma.
Frost overheard it. He didn’t push Wu about it. He didn’t try to manipulate the situation either. He just made sure that Joanna got treated for the right drug. She was able to talk to Max again. She couldn’t let him see her so injured because it might confuse him. She got to be his secret angel again. She also got to say goodbye while they both healed from what happened in that house.
It was going to be a tough journey back to each other yet Charles promised to do everything possible. He was going to reunite them one day. Beatrice was in a coma and odds are she won’t make it.
Isabel was reunited with her parents. Joanna was going to work towards her son. Later, it was revealed that Wu became Chief Resident. She got the job and while she wasn’t ready to discuss her anger issues or what they stem from – she didn’t push Frost away when he congratulated her. They chose to stand side by side in awkward silence.
And Sharon met with Plath as they finally closed this case.
THE END!
