With only three judges this season, the Blinds were going by much quicker than anyone realized. Tonight was the last night of it. The pressure was on for the contestants and first up of the night was KJ Willis. He performed “Roni”. He impressed all the judges with the opening nights but the first to turn was John. He was then followed by Kelly. Adam didn’t turn because he knew he couldn’t compete with the other two for KJ. KJ has such a beautiful voice that everyone knew he would do really well in the competition.
John said as much when he made a case for himself. He wanted him for his team. The same for Kelly. KJ toured with Babyface. Both John and Kelley have a Babyface connection. He worked with Kelly on her first album. He was a frequent guest at John’s house. Only KJ chose to go with his mom’s suggestion. He chose Team John. His dad tried to convince him to accept Kelly because Kelly has won more. KJ joked he might just choose Adam so he didn’t have to follow their advice and he ultimately went with his mom’s judgment because of the kind things John said about him.
Next up was Houston Kelly. He was from Memphis. He has some Blues/Country vibes to him. He would love to work with either Kelly or Adam. He thought they’d best understand his music. He started out performing in a small band. He got the call to audition on the day he say goodbye to his grandfather. Thus tonight’s performance was dedicated to his grandpa. He performed “Walking In Memphis”. He was good. He was performing for a good minute when Kelly chose to turn for him right at the end.
It was a total play to make sure that no one else stole him. It worked too. She turned right as Adam considered it and so Adam knew he had no chance up against her. Kelley was everything. She even sounded more country when she talks to Country artists. Kelley got Houston Kelly by being herself. She said it was fate that he joined her team because of his name. She doesn’t have anyone that sounds like him on her team so he was a rare find. It’s why she knew deep down she made sure she was the only who got him.
Ashley Marina was next. She’s from Pittsburgh. She was actually on America’s Got Talent. She didn’t win so she gave herself time and she’s back now at the grand old age of eighteen. She performed “Tonight I Wanna Cry”. It was so beautiful that the three judges didn’t play games with this one. They all turned at the same time and then funnily enough that’s when she got pitchy. The nerves didn’t kick in until then. Its alright. Her coach will help her gain confidence with time. And she did regroup rather well.
It’s not always about the mistakes. It’s about how they recover. Ashley has great things to say about Kelly. She was a huge fan and surprisingly she didn’t join her team. She chose Team John. She said she always wanted to be on his team from the start. John loved that. He thought she was joining Team Kelly until she said his name now he has another three chair turn under his belt. He was catching up to Adam. Adam still had the most of the three chair turns. He has three. Kelley and John both have two.
Aziz Guerra was up next. He was from El Paso. He was in a mariachi band. He loves singing in Spanish and he said a chair turn would mean the world to him. He didn’t care which judge turned. He just wanted to know there’s a place for him as well as his music. He performed “El Triste” tonight. His all Spanish performance was the first of the night. It also won the admiration of Adam. Adam turned for Aziz. He played a little game at first and then he snatched him in the final moments.
Aziz was followed by Mariette Gevorgian. She’s from Burbank. She was young at fifteen. She was still in high school and her song choice of “Anyone” was perhaps the best fit for her voice. It didn’t show it off as it could’ve. She started off bumpy and while she regrouped – tonight wasn’t her night. She didn’t get a turn. Neither did Jason Farol. He’s from Redondo Beach. Jason chose the song “Saturn”. Jason actually knew Kelly. Kelly recognized when she turned around. The turn didn’t come in time for Jason’s time on the show but she remembered him from another show called “Duets” that John was also on the show
Next up was Mikenley Brown. This young lady from Newcastle proved to be a three chair turn. Her rendition of “Teenage Dream” was so unique and lovely that Adam and John turned at first. They were then followed by Kelly. Kelly noticed that she was a songwriter from the start. It was in the way she rearranged that song to the point it sounded like original. Adam said he didn’t recognize it at first. He also appreciated how she was in her own world when they first turned. Only it was John who made sure he got the last word in.
Not that it mattered to Mikenley. She loved that Kelly caught on to her story. She felt seen and Kelly does know what its like to compete at that age. She chose to join Team Kelly. With Mikenley, Kelly’s team was now full. She was also evenly matched with Adam for three chair turns. They were already calling Triple Tornado. Mikenley was followed by Grace Humphries. She was known as Grandma Grace because she was an old soul. She was singing as far as she could remember and she used to perform with her brother.
Sadly, her brother passed away from cancer ten years ago as a child. She performed tonight in honor of him. She chose the song “Both Sides Now” and her vibe was definitely Folk/Country. There’s a reason her mom said she could be the next Joni Mitchell. John turned for Grace and she went on to join his team. She especially loved her Team John jacket. It’s always better when the judges come with merch. Drew Russell was next up. She loved music. She grew up around it with her father being in the business.
Drew was from Los Angeles. She went the corporate route at first because she tried it to play it safe. She wanted that safety net as a wife and mother. Yet, she was thirty-two. She knew that time was running out to pursue her dream so she came to the show. She performed “Blue Bayou”. Kelly liked her. She just was out of turns so that freed up Adam to come in and grab her for his team. It was a very much a win for him. Drew was soon followed by Syd Millevoi. She’s from Secaucus. Her mom was an opera singer.
She comes from a big Italian family. Her parents split up when she was ten. She then moved with her mom and brothers in with her grandparents and uncle. They never left. She jokes that their house was a clown house because it was like a clown car with how many people can fit in there. Syd chose the song “Mama Knows Best”. She blew everyone away with the first note. She should’ve been a three chair turn and the only reason she wasn’t because Kelly already had a full team. She had to watch as John battled it out against Adam.
John won. His team was now officially full as well. It was just Adam left. Adam left to impress. Next Up was Daniel Sovich. He’s from Aurora. He went to college for musical theater. He was all set to star in a brand new Broadway musical in the Spring of 2020 when covid happened. Suddenly, he was at a loss. He knew he couldn’t stay in New York so he headed to Nashville where he’s been ever since. He chose the song “Just the Way You Are”. It was a song that Adam loved but it wasn’t Daniel’s night. He didn’t get any turns.
The last contestant of the night was Jared Shoemaker from Richmond. He joined the Navy. He has skut work at first so singing was what got him through it. He found himself singing everyday and people on the ship would come down with their guitars to have jamming sessions with him. That’s when he realized that singing was where he needed to be. He soon left the Navy. He pursued music full-time. He came out with “I Never Lie” tonight. And he won Adam because Adam doesn’t have anyone like him on his team.
The judges all liked him and now all of their teams are full.
The Battles were up next.
The End
