In tonight’s The Voice episode, Kelly won the three chair turn championship. It gave her the Super Steal. She was the only one with it tonight. Her team was also up first. She paired Mikenley and Liv together. They were the two youngest on her team so it made sense to let them battle it out. She brought in fellow Idol Alum, Jennifer Hudson. She was there to help her team get into battle ready shape. Jennifer was a judge herself. She was a contestant at one time. She was a freaking EGOT winner as well. She was the full package and a great mentor.
Mikenley and Liv liked each other. They worked together rather well. Too well in this case because they forgot it was a competition. They couldn’t keep complimenting each other and giving the other a moment to shine. They had to stand out while making the song their own. Kelly couldn’t be there during rehearsals, but her girls did her proud. They performed “Focus”. They threw in some choreography on top of it. They really brought this duet to life. They impressed Kelly and it gave her a tough decision right from the start.
Kelly went with Mikenley. She loved her lower register’s tone. She loved the head voice. She also knew that Liv wouldn’t be left out. Both Adam and John tried to use their Steal on her. Liv has choices and Kelly didn’t want to be left out. She used her Super Steal on Liv. She got to keep Liv. She was now out of Super Steals. Not that she cared because she said Liv reminded her of a young Mariah when she first came out on the scene. She knew both ladies were winners. She just waited to use the Super Steal to toy with the guys a bit.
Team Adam was up next. He paired Bay with Hunter. He didn’t want to do it. He liked the guys too much to choose between them. Only he had to do it. He had to pair the County Rock artists against each other. He knew they would put on a great show and bring out the best in each other. He wasn’t wrong. He and his celebrity mentor brought out the best in them. His mentor was Benji Madden this season. The two rockers helped fine-tune their song choice. They chose “I’m the Problem” for the guys.
It was a little bit Country. It was a little bit Rock. It helps that both guys also played their guitars to go with the song. They stripped it down until it became their own. Both men sounded amazing. They showed off great skill and Adam suddenly found it was his turn to make a tough decision. Adam put it off as long as possible. He even came up with a new song named how much the situation sucks. He ended up going with Bay. This was it for Hunter and it really did hurt only Bay stood out a little bit more tonight.
Then Team John finally got their turn. John paired Lucas and AJ together. They developed a big brother/little brother dynamic. John didn’t merely want to coach them. He wanted to give them some real life experience in the business. It why he chose Muni Long as his mentor tonight. She was a singer/songwriter. She knew the tips to giving a stellar performance. The guys were given the song “Wanted”. Right away, Lucas was creating his own path. And that path was overshadowing poor AJ.
AJ performed the lyrics. He just didn’t feel the lyrics. He was still a kid. He didn’t get the love story behind the song just yet. John and Muni worked with him to improve. They did the same with Lucas because everyone had room for improvement. The guys put on a beautiful performance. John was very proud of them. The winner was still Lucas. Lucas captured the soul of the music and something that couldn’t be taught. John broke Kelly’s heart when AJ went home. She loved AJ. She felt bad she was out of Steals.
Team Adam was back up. He paired Bijou with Jaali. They were Adam’s two wild cards. He loved them and they both have had to fight for that spot on his team. They were given “Die For You”. Jaali had a lovely earthy tone. Bijou had those high notes. Although she had to fight to stand out beside Jaali. Benji was even getting that vibe too during rehearsals. Jaali felt a little more effortless. Bijou’s fight came in her verse. Jaali’s ease came out in hers. It wasn’t surprising when Adam later named Jaali as the winner.
Team Kelly was next. Kelly didn’t want to do the next pairing. She sorta had to do it. She paired JW and Blaire. Both were powerhouses. They were also both Old School Country artists. Kelly was still missing out on rehearsals. It was up to Jennifer to mentor the two artists. She asked them about themselves. She got their story. She then helped them apply their pasts to the song they performed. They were given “Never Again, Again”. They were given a classic and they loved every minute of it. Everyone could tell.
Both artists were special. Kelly heard them for the first time up onstage. She was moved by the performance and it sucks that they performed her favorite song. They each captured what was great about it. Still, it was a competition. Kelly named JW as the winner. She said there was just something so special about him. His voice, his guitar skills, and the fact he was so nervous during rehearsals only never showed it onstage. Kelly was loving the performances because not being in rehearsals helped her clarify a few things for her.
Team John then got to hit the stage. He paired Grace with Adi. They’ve both got such amazing tone that John knew it would be magic putting them together. The only critique he had was for them not to overdo the runs. Let the tones do the talking. It’s why they were partners for this Battle. He gave them the song “Just Give Me A Reason”. They sang for their lives with this song. They looked tired out by the end of it. It just wasn’t enough to save one of them. John chose Grace. It probably happened because there was a crack in Adi’s voice during the performance.
And the final battle of the night went to Team Adam. Adam paired Alexia and Moses. They both were R&B. They also had some Soul in there. They paired together well. There was grit in their voices. They were given the song “Nightshift”. They were so both so stellar that they didn’t mind allowing the other to shine. Everyone was expecting greatness from Alexis. It was Moses who took them by surprise. John called him a revelation. This was the toughest battle that Adam could ever face. Yet, he still chose Alexia because he knew moses was destined not to go home.
John used his Steal to get Moses on his team and so he still found a home in the end.
THE END!
